Hey all, this is my first post on this board. I just wanted some reassurance that my numbers (well, Charlie's numbers) are looking good.
AMPS-337 .5U Lantus
+3-226
+6-133

Should I check him again at +9? Or just wait unitl the PMPS??? I am so exited to see the 100s!!! However, I am also paranoid since he crashed last Monday when the vet gave him 2U. nailbite_smile
Also, I do not have the syringes that have the .5 on them, so I am eyeballing it.
please advise

thank you!!!

Re: 4/1 AMPS 337- Charlie's first day of insulin since hypo

Hi Kristina, welcome to LantusLand, the greatest place you never wanted to be! Jeesh! That was a scary first cycle on Lantus. You did great! I would probably get a +7 or +8 rather than wait for +9. Charlie is coming down pretty steadily so you'd like to see his nadir if possible. What do you feed Charlie and has that changed? If you've posted in FDMB before, could you include the link to your previous post?

Re: 4/1 AMPS 337- Charlie's first day of insulin since hypo

Here is the thread that would give you the most information.
viewtopic.php?f=28&t=91771

I was TRYING to feed him the Purina DM but he was NOT a fan. for the past 3 days they have been on FF classics, but today I had to bust out the Friskies Turkey and Giblets because I ran out of FF. (Its like 7 cans a day for the 2 fur babies)
I am working on a schedule, since they were so used to being free fed on the kibble. It's getting better little by little.
He seems to be sensitive to the insulin...but then again I have no idea what I am talking about! lol ohmygod_smile
I was just surprised to see him go from the 300s to the 100s....granted that may be "normal" ( I know, ECID) agian...I don't know much.
Monday was his crash, and then I just changed to the FF to see if it would help his BG, it didn't seem to, so today I started the shots.

Ok, let me know if you have anymore questions!
Thanks for the reply!!!

Re: 4/1 AMPS 337- Charlie's first day of insulin since hypo

Nice slow curve for Charlie today. You are doing great! Hang in there. It gets easier. You might edit your original post and put in your +3 and +6 numbers so advisors can see it. Have a wonderful day!

Re: 4/1 AMPS 337- Charlie's first day of insulin since hypo

Hi Kristina! Welcome to LL! What a wild first cycle you had on Monday  Your experience exemplifies the importance of home testing! The more data you collect on Charlie the better. You don't quite have enough data on him to know when his nadir is, but if the 25th is any indication, it was near +5. But, if you fed HC to get him up, he may have slid lower still and the subsequent rising numbers may have been food influenced.

Looks like he is having a nice, slow cycle today :) Nice blue! Hopefully he will surf a bit for you before he comes back up.

Re: 4/1 AMPS 337 +3-226, +6-133:Charlie's first day of insul

Welcome to Lantus Land!

I agree with Liz -- I'd get a +7 or a +8. This is a lovely cycle for Charlie.

I'm guessing your vet approaches Lantus dosing based on the pre-shot numbers. (To be honest, your thread on Health was really long and I didn't have a chance to read through it.) The original dose was high unless Charlie is a huge cat. The initial dose of Lantus is calculated based on a cat's weight. Most kitties' initial dose is in the neighborhood of 1.0u.

Walmart's Relion brand syringes come in half unit increments. I buy my syringes on-line from ADW.

If you've not already done so, you may want to read the starred, sticky notes at the top of the board. There's an overwhelming amount of information in them. We'll do our best to help answer your questions. The folks here are incredibly generous with their time and knowledge.

Re: 4/1 AMPS 337+3-226 +6-133 +8-195 Charlie's1st day of ins

Thank you guys for you encouragment!
There is a ton of information!!! I have read everything once, but am going through a second time...and pretty sure I'll go trough a third as well.
Thank you all for the info, it means a lot!

Re: 4/1 AMPS 337+3-226 +6-133 +8-195 Charlie's1st day of ins

You are doing great! You probably should print out the starred stickies because the board or your Internet could go out when you need it most. You can also make notes and highlight things you want to remember.

That's great you are getting him off the kibble and onto some lower carb wet food. Sounds like he's doing great. Did you find Dr. Lisa's web page on feline nutrition, catinfo.org? She has a list of foods and their content that can be very helpful. If you can get him to eat 4% carbs and low phosphorus (under 300), that would be the best. Mainly, he's got to eat though.

We do one thread (or condo) per cat per day. So when you get tonight's BG, just edit the subject line of the very top post (you can delete today's values). You can also type a reply so your thread goes to the top of the list. As a newbie, you and Charlie need extra attention and that's where to get it. :-D

Hi, Kristina, I just want to stop by and welcome you and Charlie!
You are doing great ~ and so is Charlie :-D .

I use the ReliOn Walmart syringes that Sienne mentioned above, and I've been happy with them. If you end up getting them, you may have to let the Walmart pharmacist know that they do indeed carry them ~ more often than not they don't know they have them.

That jump into high numbers is what we refer to as a bounce. Charlie has gotten out of the habit of being in a good BG range. As a result, when insulin brings his numbers down either into a lower range than he's used to or if it's a fast drop, his liver and pancreas overreact. As a result, they pump out glucagon, which is a stored form of glucose, and counterregulatory hormones. What then happens is that BG spikes back up. It can take roughly 72 hours (plus or minus) for a bounce to clear. It's a very normal response at this point in Charlie's progress -- annoying but normal.

You've gotten lots of great info, so I'm just stopping in to say "Welcome"! Ah, Charlie's first bounce, too. Since he's so responsive to the juice, I'm sure he'll clear it in no time!

Keep asking questions!!!

Hi Kristina and welcome to you and Charlie!

Looks like you are doing just fine. Don't worry about the bounce. The bg numbers before the bounce were really nice. Ask all the questions you need to ask.

Have a great evening,

Ella & Rusty

Welcome to Charlie & Kristina! You're in the best possible hands anyone could ask for. I'm pretty new here too and from what I've read, it sounds like you and I both had a pretty rough introduction with the insulin. It looks like you're doing great and Charlie too. I look forward to seeing more of what Charlie has up his paws for us to see hopefully some lovely greens!

Hello Kristina,

Welcome to LLand! You are doing great! And ALLLLLLLL of us have been right where you are!
Just keep reading, things will start to make sense after a while.

Just keep posting and filling in the information as you go along! You will do great and it does get easier!

Oh I am Rich and my lil furry man is Rex.
