just thought i'd post a short update...

alex had blood work and another ultrasound done this past tuesday. liver and kidney values aren't great, but showing a significant improvement. the ultrasound looked pretty much the same as the last one... gall bladder and duct enlarged and inflamed - no gall stones.

thankfully, her appetite seems to be returning. yaaay! my fingers are now safe. oh, and no more vomiting! 5 p's are in place. she's jumping up on the bed again. even made it to the top of the cat tree today! and she's back to putting darius and cadwyk in their places. a thwack to the top of their heads gets the message across. :mrgreen:

bg's are not the best, but ok. i haven't been pushing insulin because i wasn't sure if she would eat if i needed to bring up low numbers. however, the tide may be turning. her appetite has increased and today she's come looking to be fed. if she keeps this up i'll get those numbers knocked down in no time!

we're to continue with clavamox bid, denamarin sid and taper down the amount of daily squids spiked with b complex and b12 vitamins (as her appetite increases) over the next 10 days. she'll go in for a recheck in 2 weeks.

overall, she's doing much, much better! i can't help but think her progress has been accelerated due to the support, well wishes, positive vines, blizzards of snowflakes, and reiki sent from you. i can't thank you enough for all the support we've received both on and off board!

When I saw you on the board Jill I just felt that there was a good turn
for Alex.
I was actually going to bump the other post to find out if there were any updates.
I am so glad to hear that Alex is doing better.

That's such wonderful news! Sounds like Alex is on the mend. Just having an appetite and eating again will surely make a huge difference. So, so happy to hear about the improvements and know you must be so pleased.

Hope she just feels better and better every day. We're thinking of ya'll and sending best wishes.

So happy to hear Alex is improving.. hopefully things continue to improve quickly for both of you. She sure is a fighter that one, she knows how much she is loved by you Jill and that's what gives her strength.

This is WONDERFUL NEWS!!! So happy that she is improving...and we definitely will keep the healing vines and blizzards of snowflakes coming until she is 100%. How are YOU doing, Jill? This must have been a stressful time for you...hoping that things will settle down now and Alex will continue with this great progress!

The subject line says it all: Congratulations on the positive news on Alex.
I hope Alex gets some extra special treats and scratches for working hard at getting better.

Maybe the snowflakes and vines helped, but I'm thinking it was superior nursing by the mama bean. :-D

Way to go, Alex!! And don't take any nonsense from Darius and Cadwyck. :mrgreen:

Omigosh, this is the BEST news. I'm so happy to hear Alex is improving. Prayers still coming your way, until you post that your little girl is all well again.
And as Kathy said, it is the superior nursing by mamabean, as well as prayers. :smile:

Jill, this is such great news! :mrgreen:

I have made a bookmark of Alex's SS and have been checking it regularly (since I know you have not had the time to post), and have been noticing there seemed to be some steady improvement :-D . Today I saw that you said her blood work was better ( :-D ) and that she was eating on her own, and seemed to be feeling better. It's so good to see your post here to confirm this good news!

I agree with Kathy and Barb...you are the bestest Momma bean, and your dedication and love for Alex, as well as your patience and nursing skills no doubt played a huge role here, along with the positive vines and snowflakes that are still coming your way!

I look forward to the day that you can say she has really turned the corner and is completely well again!

I know how hard you have been working to keep Alex ok, and I know you must be exhausted and hopefully feeling more optimistic each day. And the whole time you've been keeping an eye on LL too. We love you and will keep the snowflakes coming for as long as they are needed.

Jill-- I have been looking for posts, but was afraid to ask how Alex was doing!! I am overjoyed that she is better & on the mend!

I'm so glad to hear that Alex is doing so much better. It's always nice to see them sitting in there familar places etc. And the biggest thing of all, eating on their own! She could'nt have done this without you Jill.

Will continue to keep you both in my thoughts. Take care of yourself too for I'm sure you are emotionally and physically tired.

yes, i'm tired and emotionally drained, but not any more so than many of you who have or are dealing with sick kitties. in fact, many of you have set an example i've been trying to live up to. one thing i've learned... it's amazing how quickly the little things can lift one's spirits. :-D

What wonderful news! How encouraging and uplifting it must be to see her start to act like herself again. It must make you smile to see her give the others a swat or two.

Jill I'm sorry to hear about Alex, I haven't been popping in LL and had no idea. You mentioned antibiotics and Denamarin -- is she also on Ursodiol? This is helpful for non-obstructive gall bladder disease and liver disease; it works as a mild anti-inflammatory and also thins bile a bit. It's worth asking about--all the VIN cat vets love it. My own dog is on it for his cholangiohepatitis.

Best wishes for her continued recovery -- let me know if there is any way to help.

thanks for stopping by, jess. i think ursodiol is the same thing as actigall??? if so, my vet did mention it in passing. i think i was on information overload at the time. it's all become somewhat blurry. i'll bring it up with him on monday. thank you!



oldtimer's caturday update:

we're seeing improvements as each day passes. :mrgreen:

in addition to alex being interested in food (which is HUGE)... she's eating her normal amount of food on her own. i'll still finger feed a little bit here and there, if only to get a few more calories into her.

getting her denamarin pill down her (a good-sized pill) has become much easier since choy-foong sent me this very interesting article: http://felinecrf.the-colonel.info/Documents/Meds_and_Subqs.html. i think i had become so focused on doing what we had to do and when we had to do it that i lost sight of alex... her fears and comfort level. we've come up with our own tailor made pill taking method, but this article has some very helpful information for any who are pilling their kitty. thank you, choy-foong!

last, but not least... the WCR:

i think the "whole cat" must be feeling pretty darn good because this morning, much to my surprise and delight (despite years of telling her to get down) ... alex jumped up onto the kitchen counter when i called her to have her BGs tested! she hasn't done that since weeks before i knew she was sick. now she's basking in the sunbeams streaming through the windows.
ah, the life of a cat...
