322 Tonight

Hello,

I'm not new but I'm back again!

Just tested my cat and he is at 322. I have old insulin dated June 2010. Can I still use this? And how much?

Thanks,

Sandy and Felix

Hi!

Couple of questions.....what type of insulin is it?
Where have his numbers been recently? Has he been off of insulin for a while?

Oh, can you go back to the first post and edit your "subject" line? The "candle" icon is usually used for when a kitty passes. We don't want people to get the wrong idea.

Carl

Thank you for correcting me about the candle.

Sorry for being so vague. I was very active here back in 2009. That is when Felix went OTJ. He recently started looking thinner to me and I also noticed that he was drinking more water than usual so to ease my suspicions, I decided to test him. Low and behold he tested at 322. He used to be on Lantus and I still have some. I'm freaking out right now because I have forgotten what to do and how much to give. Is it okay to give old insulin? I want to give him some right away to bring his number down but thought I would wait to hear from someone here. He has not yet eaten dinner, I'm holding off on that too.

Thanks!

Sandy

I'm looking for a lantus user to answer your question...
Carl

unfortunately with lantus the answer is no...you cannot use it.
we can get you started with remembering every thing you learned.
can you get a script for lantus or levemir now?

I would not use the old Lantus. Once a bottle or pen of Lantus has been opened and used, it is good for about a month or so. There is an expiration date printed on the bottle or pen but that is only for unopened/never used Lantus.

Once you have new Lantus, I suggest starting off at 0.5 units or 1 unit twice a day.

Don't I need a prescription for Lantus? The vet's office does not open until Monday. Can I go that long without giving him insulin? Now I'm really freaking out.

Carl asked me to stop by.

If the expiration date on the vial or pen is passed, your Lantus is no longer usable. In most cases, when you purchase Lantus, you have at least a year for the insulin to reach expiration. In all likelihood, what you've got is either unstable or just no good. You're probably going to need to wait until Monday to see your vetor go to an ER vet to get a prescription. I wouldn't freak out. Chances are this didn't happen overnight and his numbers have been up for a while.

If your cat has been OTJ for this long and you have any BG tests, the rise in BG may be an indication that there's something else going on -- some sort of infection may be brewing or your cat may need a dental. It's probably a good idea to get in to see your vet as soon as you can. Just as a precaution, I'd get some Ketostix and test for ketones especially if your cat's behavior is "off."

If the container has been opened and it's been over a year, I would definitely not use it.

Sandy try to stay calm. Your Felix's number may fluctuate some between now and monday. Tom was OTJ for 2.5 years and when he came back his numbers were up and down some before I got my hands on the insulin.
Keep the food as low carb as possible.
Keep yourself from freaking out...Felix is in good hands with you.

And like Sienne said, it didn't happen overnight, but has probably been climbing for a few days at least. You mentioned seeing the excess drinking and him getting skinny which made you test him in the first place right? So a couple days isn't going to make a huge difference.

Bright side - you already know the routine! The SS function at googledocs is a little different, but other than that, you should be ready to go, and hopefully not for too long till he's back under control.

Carl

I will take deep breaths and relax. I just can't believe it came back. I've been giving him Friskies Turkey and Giblets diet food since his last battle with the illness. No carbs at all.

Thanks everyone for your quick replies.

Sandy

I just went to goggledocs and did a search for "FDMB" and it gave me the US and World versions of our SS.
