Good morning and happy president's day!

it's been 31 hrs since I last gave his shot and Sam is 465. For those of you who aren't aware, 12 hrs after his shot of 0.5U sam was 87. The vet said to skip his pm shot and give him 1U today since I don't have half mark on my syringe and for some reason she thinks giving an accurate 1U is better than an eyeballed half mark, even though she said we needed to reduce his dose to 0.5U.

Sam is eating now, and then I will give him 0.5U. I'm planning on testing him 6+ again.
Any other suggestions?

thank you!

I am not up to date on Sam, but I am thinking you might need to reduce even further than .5. If you were at 87 at +12 on the half of unit, it seems to me that the .5 is too much. I would reduce the dose further--but, that is just my thoughts.

Wow, on your vet! She thinks you need to reduce, but that you can't see!!! I use U40s and eyeball everything from .2 to .6. Good for you on not increasing the dose to 1 unit like she suggested!

I can't pull up the SS at work...but, I am curious--do you have any midcycle test on the .5? Especially the cycle that produced the 87 at +12.

Edited to correct grammer (southern slang!)

I wasn't around much this weekend so I'm not current on Sam either but I agree with Kim.

Looking at your spreadsheet the .5u you shot yesterday was on a similar bg number, I wouldn't shoot another .5u, maybe a .25u at the most.

Some here mark on a syringe where 1/2 & 1/4 are and use it as a guide for measuring smaller doses by holding it up to the syringe you are filling.

thank you for the suggestions! gosh I wish I had waited before I shot him 0.5U  for once I thought I knew what I was doing!!

My syringe is 20U :-| how do I go buying one that is 40 or 100U?

Yesterday at 2am was the first time I had given him 0.5U so 9 hrs later he tested 87, then about 11+ he tested 78 at the vet.
Since I gave him 0.5U should I give his pm shot? well of course I have to test him first and plan from there..
I'm planning on checking him today 6 hrs after his shot too.

A midcycle number will be great. Think of this as data gathering. You are shooting and gathering data and learning a little more each time. Once we see how his day went and what your evening number is, we can give better advice.

I think he should be fine. Number under 50 are worrisome so if you get a number in that range, come on for advice.

To do the tiny doses, most people use U100 needles and the conversion chart. (ProZinc is a U40 insulin so to use other needles, a conversion is necessary.) I am not sure what you mean by 20U - that is allows for a maxium of 20 units in the syringe? As long as the box says U40, you are fine.

Here is the conversion chart: http://www.felinediabetes.com/insulin-conversions-printer.htm

I didn't use the U100 needles but others can tell you what and where to buy them.

Thank you is I meant my syringe allows a max of 20 U but the box does say 40U.

The vet I saw yesterday actually just called to follow up, she said if I gave him his full 1U dose I said yes, but I gave him 0.5U. I'm supposed to see her tomorrow but I won't. There is another vet in this clinic and I have an appointment next week, he was more supportive of home testing.

Yes, you need U100 needles, 1/2 unit markings, 30-31 gauge. Some like short needles, some like long. Prescriptions are necessary in some states but not others. I think people get them at Walmart but someone will be along to give you sources.

To use the conversion chart, say you want to give .4 units of ProZinc. You would draw up to the one unit line on the U100 needles. You are giving .4 units. It just looks different on the needle. It is much more accurate than trying to guess where .4 might be on U40 needles. Most people have the conversion chart on their refrigerator so they can check it each time before shooting.

Hi -

I'm on my way to Walmart to buy their brand "Relion" needles. I give .2 and .4 units to my boy Grayson, and use the following needles - that have half unit increments: 3/10 ml capacity, 31 gauge, 8 mm length. You can buy a pkg of 10 for about $2, or the box of 100 for a considerable amt of savings. I wanted to try them out so I bought one package. I am pretty pleased with them, so I am going back for a box.

NOTE: These ARE u100 needles SO YOU MUST use the conversion chart.

These are the ones I just picked up. A box of 100 cost me $12 and change. Was pleased with the cost.

thank you I just came back from walmart, it said capacity 1mL doses up to 110 units 31 gauge and 8mm length. does this sound the right kind?

I also started another thread asking clarification on the conversion table but I guess I can post it here too
My syringe box says 40u but the actual syring has 20 units.
I want to give 0.5u to my cat but the "To administer this amount
of U-40 insulin" table has 0.20, 0.40, 0.60 and 0.80 and 1.0

"the Draw to this level in a U-100 syringe" says 1.0 40U is equivalent to 2.5 in 100u syringe is this right? I don't see 2.5 units in the 100u syringe only 10,20,30 and so on. but I also want to give him 0.5U
I'm confused!

thank you yes it has 4 hash marks on the orange cap syringe.
I just tested Sam 6+ after his shot and he is 286. He's been munhcing during the day too.
is his result a good thing?

Nadja -

There are at least three different Relion brand U100 needles at our Walmart. The pharmacist brought them out and we looked at all of them. I took the smallest one which had hash marks for each 1 unit, and wider marks for 5, 10, 15, ... When you're dosing so little, you don't need the larger needles. The ones I got from my vet are labeled "High Dose". Don't think I'll be using them again any time soon, since Grayson is using about .4 units! You can buy them by the bag ($2 for 10), or box (~$12 for 100). I tried the bag to see how I liked them. There's a lengthy discussion on needles on another thread. These seem to work just fine for me. Hopefully you are comfortable with the ones you purchased. Not sure what the policy is to return unopened packages.

thank you. I will have to purchase something else because I think 0.5U is still too much for Sam. I just tested him 12 hrs after his am shot and he tested 65 :?
So I need needles that have half marks so I can reduce his dosage even more!
