Hello-

Continued upset as Maxi doesn't seem to feel well. I can see it in his face.

Also, he's becoming more reluctant to get his shots. His 6 units of Lantus ended up as a partial fur shot this morning. I know I got most of it in. His 1 unit of R got in except for 1 tiny drop.

Until now I've given the shots while he's eating without restraining him. I'll have to start restraining him.

I've read about osteo problems in cats with acromegaly. Maxi's arm bone clicks a lot. Worrying.

The more time goes on without bringing Maxi's numbers down, the more symptomatic he becomes, the more the shots hurt him, the more I read about how bad acromegaly is, the more scared and sad I get.

I'm very thankful his appetite is still good.

Have you thought about switching to Lev? Ollie started getting aggressive on 6 of lantus. Sometimes the lev bothers her, but I think it's when her belly is sore from maybe the p'titis inflammation.

Acro does create overgrowth of soft tissue and bone. And it could be arthritis. Keeping the weight good goes a long way. Ollie doesn't move much anymore. Jumps up on her chair, comes to eat and that's about it. Otherwise sits and sleeps. She can purr up a storm, likes some brushing now, and loves, loves, loves head only scritches.

Ollie has days of looking and feeling bad. And for awhile she had more bad than good days. Now I think they are about even.

It's hard to see them so bad. Before I knew of Ollie's acro, she looked and I'm sure felt miserable, I didn't know what to do for her. Time and treating what we did know helped some. But getting glucoses down and the caber going has been the key. She will never be a playful kitty and pretty sure being 13+ yrs is part of it. But she is living as well as she wants.

Hi Paula-

Yes, I definitely intend to switch to Lev. But I have 5. 75 pens of Lantus and not unlimited funds. As soon as the shot is over, Maxi carries on eating without hesitation. I will see how long he can stand Lantus before taking the financial loss and getting Lev.

I have asked the vet for buprenorphine.

How much does Ollie weigh, and do you think that's a good weight for her? Maxi is slightly fat, but I worry about weight loss because of his kidney disease.

Thanks

Correction: I have 10.75 pens of Lantus! :-(

NDW = new dose wonkiness. (from your question on yesterday's post)

With that mid yellow, looks like you did get most of the dose in today. Neko ate so fast (less than 30 seconds sometimes), I ended up giving the shot after she'd eaten.
Maxi's arm bone clicks a lot. Worrying.
Neko had quite bad acroarthritis. Her bones never clicked. My husband's ankle has clicked for more than 30 years. It doesn't hurt him, just means he can't sneak up on me. ;)

Once you get the numbers down, Maki will feel much better. Also, a lot of the symptoms you read about are not something that happens right away. Acromegaly is a slow moving disease. It takes a while for the changes to happen. Neko weighed between 13-14.9 lbs. I had an agreement she couldn't go as high as 15. :p She was part Maine Coon so larger anyway. She once went under 13 and the vet thought she was too low.

You can often get cheap Lev pens on the Supply Closet forum, it it's something you want to just try for a bit. For now, I would concentrate on cabergoline and R. Changes due to cabergoline take a week or two to start showing.
