I have gone in search of my happy face, which seems to have been discarded in the trash bin. Oh..... there it is -----> :-D Good thing about yesterday was that we had a decent am cycle - no dives or huge bounces, until the PM cycle when Mannie, or rather his internal organs, decided to go postal pink. What to say about this morning... extremely disappointing. On the good side, the +2 is down. And yes, it is just one cycle out of thousands. I am seriously considering ditching this meter - it does run at least 10% higher than the others I have used, sometimes up to 20%, and when dealing with high numbers, the bounces are horrific. Now to find something whose test strips I can afford. Better go find that happy face again.

Mannie is great his morning -as alwasy he does not care that his numbers are horrible this morning. He woke me up with soft gentle whiskers on my face, and a furry purry greeting. so.... as always we stumbled out of bed, fumbled through the morning routine of test feed shoot - all the while he is purring and dishing out head rubs. what a guy! cat_pet_icon :-D :-D  Nanners are currently being rearranged, and civvie scent being removed. I alwasy have to laugh when he comes over to the pile, gives them a sniff, and promptly slobbers over them all, rubs them all, cuddles and removes any and all traces of civvie scent.  All is well in MannieLand.

Have a great day everyone! I am off for a hair cut this AM, or as my MIL used to call them: lower my ears. weird expression, huh. later this afternoon I am off to visit friends in the "big city", aka Seattle, if I can wade through the monsoon that we are currently having. :-D !!

Re: 3/9 Mannie AMPS 562, +2 491

Good morning guys ... uck on the morning numbers mannie! I'm glad you are still feeling fine and looking good, but just imagine how you would be feeling if you ditched this red floor? Almost makes me think a new nanner would be needed! Hope you have a safe drive out to see your friends today .. have a great day guys!

Re: 3/9 Mannie AMPS 562, +2 491

Yikes! That amps is none too pretty. Hopefully Mannie keeps coming down for you today.

Enjoy being pampered at the hair salon.

Re: 3/9 Mannie AMPS 562, +2 491, +4 326

326 @ +4. and down we go... yet another dive. I am glad to see pink, though I wish he had done it slower. I do hope he can level out so we can avoid the bounce that will come after such a dive. I have added another mini meal, hopefully this will even things out a bit. paws crossed. :-D

Hi Devon -  maybe that's it! The nanners have gone stale and this is his way of getting new ones... and thanks - looking forward to the outing - it will be good to see them.

Hi Iorwen - me too! I sure didn't think I'd see black this morning. I am looking forward to the haircut so that I can once again see. The bangs have sun amuck!

Hi Celi - that would be me... they always insist on that gel/mousse stuff.... makes one feel like you have helmet hair.   I always end up coming home and combing it out.

Re: 3/9 Mannie AMPS 562, +2 491, +4 326

Aiyeeeeee, these bounces. DH keeps telling me since we know the meter reads higher, it's Ok don't let it bother you. Yeah, right. ohmygod_smile

At least it's a good day to get out, have fun in Seattle.

Re: 3/9 Mannie AMPS 562, +2 491, +4 326

Hi, Michelle & Mannie.. look at him go.. hitting every color.. +6 may be a pretty yellow or an even prettier blue ;-)
I hope all of you are having an enjoyable day!

Re: 3/9 Mannie AMPS 562, +2 491, +4 326, +6 224/174

224 @ +6 with the infinity, 174 with the maxima. well holy cow - 28% variance. so following that lead poor Mannie's 561 this morning could well have been a 352. Personally I can't find that acceptable. so..... new meter on the horizon. I can still order maxima strips, so think I will go back to that, and search for another back up meter that is affordable. 28%??? unreal! and here I am basing dosing decisions on numbers that a bit overstated. Probably not a good thing. logic has it that those 50's we were getting could well have been in the 30's.

oh well.... and we move forward.

Re: 3/9 Mannie AMPS 562, +2 491, +4 326, +6 224/174

Wow...that's quite a variation. I haven't priced the Freestyle Lite strips but I think Libby was saying she absolutely loved it. I use the One Touch Ultra mini and while I love the meter, the strips are pricey; I get them on ebay, usually for $20-$25/for 50. The thing is, we both like the meter alot and it's small so it doesn't bother Gracie when I hold it up to her ear. I also have a Contour (which I'm going to donate for newbies) and she doesn't like it when I hold that up to her ear.

I know you will feel better about a different meter. These numbers would drive me crazy, too, esp if they are artificially elevated. Does your vet have an Alpha Trak that she might be willing to loan you over a weekend? Our vet did and we found it to usually be just about 20 ("points" not %) off from our meter...and pretty consistently whether Gracie's number were high or low. The Contour always ran 20 over the AT!!

Hope you have a wonderful day slogging around in Seattle and your stylist is as good as the one in the pic that Celi posted for you

Re: 3/9 Mannie AMPS 562, +2 491, +4 326, +6 224/174

Hi Michelle,
That is quite a difference in meters. I keep threatening to ditch the ATrak in search of a less expensive one. A lot of Beans seem to like the Walmart Confirm. The only thing sometimes Walmart doesn't always have strips in stock the day you shop. I use the Atrak mostly because of my Vet checking her SS every week.
The ATrack runs about 25-30 points higher than my back-up Relion. I see Mannie is coming down nice and slow.

Re: 3/9 Mannie AMPS 562, +2 491, +4 326, +6 224/174

I'm all for blaming meters, but keep in mind, if you had poked twice in a row and tested with the same meter, you could easily have gotten the same two numbers... any given number is not really the number, but rather the center of a range that goes from 80% to 120% of that number.

224 really means a range from 180 to 267.
174 really means a range from 140 to 209.

So, in effect, you know that, assuming both meters are functioning properly, Mannie's BG at that moment was in a range from 180 to 209.... the area of overlap between the two.

Because they are ranges based on the percentage of deviation allowed by the FDA, the higher the number, the higher the range. For example, a number of 50 really tells you that the BG is in the range from 40 to 60... much smaller range.

And some meters run lower, and some run higher, but ultimately, they should all be getting you within 20% of the actual number.

Okay, math lesson over!  Glad that Mannie is coming down today... hoping he smooths things out again!

Re: 3/9 Mannie AMPS 562, +2 491, +4 326, +6 224/174, +11 142

142 @ +11. made Blue - way to go Mannie!

Thanks everybody for your input - much appreciated! and Christie for the math lesson. :-D

Hi Ann - I know... I know it runs higher too, and can accept that fact, but... both you and I never recorded such ugly bounces until we switched to this meter. I guess we either accept the fact that is does run substantially higher or use a different one. I hear the freestyle lite is good, and I did look at that one, but strips are expensive. and what a lame excuse that is huh.

Hi Nicole - Fantastic day - rains sopped and the sun came out - hooray!! just about the same time Mannie managed a 142. YAY!

Hi marjorie - I have the ultra mini as a back up - like it alot too... Mannie has never cared about the meter size (the infinity is big), so i am grateful i don't have that issue. Not sure on the vet - i've never asked. might check that out. -- and HAHA on the stylist - yeah I like her - she's good. and omg on the rains in seattle - i wished i'd brought my rowboat!

Hi Ann and Maggie- thanks! At least he is coming down some. I guess I need to decide what I want to do. :)

Hi Christie - thanks, numbers makes sense. and yeah on two side by side tests with the same meter - i do that often enough when a reading is questionable, and they never are the same, but within range. What does concern me, if that is even the right word, is that these high bounces out of the black and red zone were not part of his repertoire until this meter. so.... i either accept that it will run alot higher in the high numbers, or I get a different meter. and yes - we are coming down - YAY! :-D :-D Looking forward to a great PM cycle.

Re: 3/9 Mannie AMPS 562, +2 491, +4 326, +6 224/174, +11 142

Wow, is Mannie gearing up for another Rainbow Bandit outing? Sheesh! The variance in meters is surprising, too. I use the walmart meter because I can afford the strips, and its never given me a problem. The countour is great, I got one w/ my newbie kit, but it's not super great for newbies because many of us cannot afford the strips and end up switching to walmart relion instead.. just my $0..02.

Good luck with the hair! I always comb that gunk out of my hair too!

Re: 3/9 Mannie AMPS 562, +11 142, PMPS 137

137 @ PMPS. A little bit of a falling number, so.... I will get a +1 just to see what the Rainbow Bandit has up his sleeve. :-D

Hi Violet - it could well be! He has hit ever color today but the one we all want - green. Who knows  - the night is still young, a did shoot a falling number, maybe the rainbow bandit will make an appearance. I will have to look at the walmart one. I really like the ultra Mini - but it's the same thing: to walk into a pharmacy and buy those is about $55. Well one way or another, the poke sessions will continue. -- and yes on that hair gunk - blech.

Re: 3/9 Mannie AMPS 562, +11 142, PMPS 137

Hi Michelle. I'm feeling your pain today. Checkers hasn't come down from the pink floor all day. Most of the time in high pink, at that. Yeah, I know, meter varience (ance?), and all, Still you don't want to see the higher numbers.
It's so good to see Mannie down in the blues.

I use the AgaMatrix Wavesense Presto meter. It's at Amazon, among other places. Strips are always around $15 per 50.
My backup is the Relion Confirm from Walmart. Those strips are $20 per 50. It takes the teeniest amount of blood.

Re: 3/9 Mannie PMPS 137, +1 134

134 @ +1. hmmmm.... not much of a food spike.

Hi Barb - thanks on the meter info. it is helpful to know what others use and what they pay for strips. thanks for the rest. so true - numbers like that are painful, and through in the meter thing, well... you know. I ma grateful for the blues tonight. :-D

Re: 3/9 Mannie PMPS 137, +1 134

~O) for you Michelle in case you need it. As for meters, I have an AlphaTrak and a ReliOn. I ditched the AlphaTrak because of the cost of the strips. The ReliOn strips are $39.00 for 100. I have compared the two meters and never had much of a variance despite what they tell you. Go figure. Hope all is well with you and yours. Ton's chemistry profile is perfect. Results for ultrasound and T4 tomorrow.

Re: 3/9 Mannie PMPS 137, +1 134

Well, Mannie, are you finished with the bounce and the dive??
I'll chime in on the meter thing: we are using the Walmart ReliOn Micro. It costs $9. and the strips are $20. for 50. The blood sample is very small (3ml). I have the Walmart ReliOn Confirm as the backup. It uses the same test strips and costs the same and also takes the very small blood sample. But I am thinking that I should get a backup meter of a different brand, just in case, so I have been looking at the Freestyle Lite (highly recommended by Libby and also by Lisa). I think I will order it. I found the meter kit together with 50 strips at American Diabetes Wholesale for around $34. Check out their website: http://www.americandiabeteswholesale.co ... ter_53.htm
Lisa says that the manufacturer (Abbot, I think) will send you a free meter if you go to their website and register, but I didn't want to fill out those forms and then get tons of mail!

Good luck! (I always thought it was your meter; even though you know that it reads high, it is depressing to see those high numbers day after day!)

Hope you had a nice day in rainy Seattle. Our rain has begun here and this rain/sleet/snow storm is supposed to dump around 4 more inches of wet precipitation. We also are having flood alerts because of ice jams on the rivers. But skiing was great today!!

Re: 3/9 Mannie PMPS 137, +1 134, +2 118

118 @ +2 - looks like we will have an active cycle tonight. SWEET! after this morning it is almost welcome. :-D

Ella - many thanks! oh yes on the meter. I knew it too - it has just reached the point that I do not want to see these high of numbers anymore, and I am sure that Ann doesn't either, due, in part, to a meter that will read 20% higher (granted - some of the issue here is Mannie). That 28% difference this afternoon was the last straw. I understand the math that Christie discussed, know it is fact. but as you said - it is depressing, very depressing, to look at these high numbers day after day, even though I know it reads high. Thanks for the link to ADW. I have heard of the meter, hear that it is good, and that price is doable. I will also pay Walmart a visit. --- our news was loaded with a discussion of the weather system headed your way - it even took over for our weather, quite the storm coming through. Alot are very worried about flooding., i hope you guys will be OK.

Thanks Marjorie - I hope so!

Hi Barbara - thank you too! looks like we have lots of votes for the ReliOn. I was glad to read on FB that Ton's chemistry came back good. What a relief! I hope the rest is as good.

Re: 3/9 Mannie PMPS 137, +1 134, +2 118, +3 81

81 @ +3. fed some 10% MC, and will test at +3.5  , and sure beats this morning. Looks like the rainbow bandit is on the loose again....

Re: 3/9 Mannie PMPS 137, +1 134, +2 118, +3 81

Mannie....boy it took a while for those niptecates to work...but they are now for both of us. Please send rope!!

Re: 3/9 Mannie PMPS 137, +1 134, +2 118, +3 81

answered this in the pm...but i use the relion micro daily...and have the Nova Max Plus as a backup...
love them both...

Re: 3/9 Mannie PMPS 137, +1 134, +2 118, +3 81, +3.5 81

81 @ +3.5, more 11%. test at +4. the MC seems to have stalled the drop, which is OK - it's green, and a safe green. So surf Mannie, OK?

Hi Celi - and yes and thanks for the info. There will be a change here. I am done with mornings like today - granted a large part of that was Mannie, but another was the meter. and those blacks are damn depressing.

Gracie - I hope I gots enough.... we used up so much when we rescued Tess.... see you. hey - maybe KTSS for Tori tonight? She's better, but I thought maybe one of those massages with the lavender stuff... ~~~ Mannie

Re: 3/9 Mannie PMPS 137, +1 134, +2 118, +3 81, +3.5 81

Go, Mannie!!! :) Such pretty numbers tonight!!!

I use the Advocate Redi-Code, which takes some getting used to in terms of using the strips, but is very cost effective. I got the meter from ADW, but you can also find them on ebay. I order the strips from ebay as well, and I generally can get the strip cost down to $0.15 to $0.18 per strip, which has been a godsend, given how much we've been testing lately! I honestly don't know what I would have done if we were still using the Alphatrak... the cheapest I've found strips is around $0.80/strip. The advocate does take a bigger blood drop, so if Wilie has a day where he isn't bleeding well, I will use our Relion instead.

The other nice thing about the Advocate is that at higher ranges especially, it does seem to consistently give numbers in the lower end of the range. :)

And don't feel bad... if you had any idea the things like that I do to get through any given day..... :)

Hope you guys are having a great night!!!

Re: 3/9 Mannie PMPS 137, +1 134, +2 118, +3 81, +3.5 81

Oh Mannie. You really give the title Techicolour Kitty new meaning. Nobody can do it the way you can. DOb't go too low tonight OK? If you started surfing now it would be great.

TOri is looking forward to your visit later tonight. SHe says she's going to try and whip up some niptinis for the KTSS. She loves your visits.

Re: 3/9 Mannie PMPS 137, +1 134, +2 118, +3 81, +4 85, +4.5

85 @ +4 fed this with some 3%
91 @ +4.5 did not feed this... I hope he can surf. paws crossed, ok Mannie? I do know that his nadir has apparently shifted and is now around +5, maybe +6

MJ - LUVS YA! :-D :-D :-D so true: "Oh Mannie... Mannie... Mannie..." I love my graph...

Hi Barb - Technicolor! that was well put, and I will have to remember that one. I hope he read your post and hoped on the board. and surfed. surf Mannie - no bouncing.... Niptinis? Did someone say niptinis? I am SO THERE! See you soon Tori. we gots stories to tell, and healing times to be had. on our way! ~~ Mannie

Hi Christie - thanks on the meter info. I am sure hearing alot about ebay - may have to start looking there. I am all for saving a few pennies here and there. on those days where it is test after test - it's like one vial of strips is gone in a couple of days. :? omg - i had one day where i went through 37 strips - mostly test, and a few screw-ups due to whatever... well, anyways - appreciate the info. :-D thanks on all the rest.

Hi Cheryl! Thanks for the visit! :-D :-D :-D

Re: 3/9 Mannie PMPS 137, +2 118, +3 81, +4 85, +4.5 91, +5 8

83 @ +5, fed a little 5%, will test at +5.5. hop on the board Mannie -

ETA: 94 @ +5.5. no food, will test at +6. I hope he' surfin'....
