Let me start by saying that last night he shocked me by giving me a very high number; it got worse from there - here's the recap:

AM-85
PM-118
+2 - 173
+10.5 - 188

Nothing was different food-wise. I was pretty shocked. Then this morning I had to leave early for a class so I gave him his drop an hour early based off the +10.5.

The PM number was 118. I'm afraid to test him before bed again!!!

I'm wondering if it's cuz you shot early this morning? not sure.

what are u afraid of tonight? lol 118 is good! I would get a spotcheck or two tonight.

Im confused thou - what was his AMPS this morning? nothing on SS for this morning, other than you shot an hour early
and an AMPS of 85 for yesterday's date.

Can u add Boomers AMPS and PMPS for today to your subject line?

My insulin was opened in around November 10th. I have other Lantus pens that have not been opened.

I didn't know how to do my AMPS this morning! His shot time is 8am and pm. Today I had to leave the house at 7am. I tested him at +10.5 and then gave him his shot off that number. Do I move that number to the AMPS slot? Tonight the PMPS was at 8. Sorry for the confusion. His numbers were high before I did anything to mess up his schedule.

Re: 3/9, Boomer's numbers - weird!

Ok you win the award for the longest anyone has used one pen. ohmygod_smile
I would be very careful when you start a new one since Boomer's numbers have been so good and this one is probably getting to be toast at this point.

Re: 3/9, Boomer's numbers - weird!

Oooooppps! The current Lantus I'm using is a vial, not a pen. I have extra pens that I got separately. Sorry for the confusion. Do you think I need to open a new one? I thought they were good for 6 months.

PS - where the heck is Easton? I just noticed you're in MASS

Yes, move the +10.5 number to your AMPS. Then you can make a note in your comments that AMPS was at +10.5
You can also put +10.5 in the same box as the AMPS number, small print right under the number. Make sense?

Since you shot tonight at 8pm, it was actually 13.5 hours from the morning shot, you should note that too. One early shot in the morning and then thirteen and half hours later (at your normal time) you gave a late PM shot. Is this correct? If so, please note it in your SS so everyone reading it can understand.

Nice numbers regardless.... all blues and greens, very pretty! Boomer is looking good on that one drop. :-D

Re: vial vs cartridge or pen. I don't think it matters what the Lantus is in... it still only lasts around a month or so. Six months is when it is un-opened. Once you open it - the manufacturer's recommended time frame is around 28 days, but many people do get a longer time to use it. That is why the smaller pens are more cost effective, you don't have to discard as much after a month as you do in a vial.

Re: 3/9, Boomer's numbers - weird!

HOLY CRAP!!!! I thought once a vial was opened you could use it for many months - maybe 6 wasn't correct, but I thought people here and the vet told me it lasted a while. Regardless, it's been 4 months. Should I toss it? Is that a big YES???? If so, I'll start tomorrow morning with a fresh one. It's a pen so that's new to me.

To clarify (of further confuse :o  ) I tested him this morning at +10.25 but didn't give his shot until +11, so his AM shot is one hour late. Then for PM, technically I gave him his shot at 7:45, so it's 45 mins late. Sorry. I updated my SS.

I'll also do a +3.

It's time for me to get ready for my PM reiki treatments for my pet group - 4 cats and a drooler. Boomer acts as my proxy.

Re: 3/9, Boomer's numbers - weird!

yes to everything CD said.

Might as well open the new insulin, Boomer is getting so close to OTJ so why take a chance with so-so juice?

Re: 3/9, Boomer's numbers - weird!

I'm not sure CD is accurate. Jill has noted that you can get 6 mos. use out of Lantus (regardless of the container) and many people in the German forum do get this kind of use from Lantus. I don't think anyone here gets that length of time. I think about 45 - 60 days has been the maximum that I've seen. The manufacturer recommends that an opened Lantus container be disposed of after 28 day; unopened Lantus can have an expiration of a coupld of yearss. Gabby is very sensitive to the state of her insulin and I have had 2 occasions where I've gone beyond the 28 days and her numbers went wonky. The last time I had to completely rebuild Gabby's shed. I suspect that if you think Boomer's numbers are weird, it's time for new insulin.

To All of my Wonderful LL'ers:
the new pen is officially being opened. Woo-hoo. We want the serious stuff over here!!! Maybe that's why Mr. Green (with his magnificent teeth) hasn't been hanging around as much. Oh, Mr. Greeeeeen, we're getting out a fresh new pen over here!!! Don't be a stranger, ya here?
