Does he like to be brushed? Get a slicker brush. My cats love it. It is amazing how much fur it collects.

So glad to hear your little one is feeling better. Never ever heard about an obstruction from a hairball but makes sense.

My son's dog was completely blocked up and required an operation to relieve the obstruction.
The cause of his blockage was excessive grass. He used to eat grass like a cow.

Dr. James Herriot, British vet has a story in one of his books about a cat that was doing poorly. Dr.James finally did exploratory surgery and found a humongous hairball. This was back in the 1940's, 1950's. So not as many diagnostic tools back then.

Geoffrey Hatfield’s tabby cat. Lived in the sweet shop. Suffered from unexplained loss of weight. A hairball was found to be the cause of the trouble and was removed surgically.
