Saturday Tux stopped eating anything but was drinking. While I was at work husband said someone peed on the floor. Pretty sure now it was vomit from Tux. Sunday, kept eye on him, have cerenia. He was alert, peeing in box, drinking, even playing with toy. Just not eating. Figured I would get him to vet or urgent care today. He does get "gastritis" couple times a year.

Sunday 10:30 pm he projectile vomit all clear fluid. Took him to ER. xray showed a lot of gas but also part of his intestine was perfectly straight and because of all the gas it was questionable. So my options were to let them give some meds and fluids, take him home and see his vet for xrays in morning or leave him and they would do it all. Since I didn't know if I could get him into his vet immediately, I chose to leave him at ER. One of the hardest things I had to do.

This morning I went to visit, hoping to take him home. I get there and Dr says he had projectile vomiting and xray shows obstruction. Surgery today. As I write this he is in surgery.

Depending on how involved it becomes, he will come home tomorrow. He will have a pain patch, cone and of course keep him confined. Playpen will be set up for him.

So he needs the Magic of the Board.

Update- Tux is out of surgery and waking up. He had a "petrified" hairball.

Dr said it had to have been there for quite sometime. She said it was lodged and no way he was going to be able to pass it in anyway. She said it was also one of the most solid, hardest hairball she ever seen. There was also another smaller one farther up.

Surprised he's never had an issue with hairball obstruction in his 7 yrs.

So glad everything went well and it was only a hairball, but what a special one ...! Now it's recovery time for Tux! He's gonna be so happy to go back home and I can imagine how well he's gonna feel without that stuff!
I'm so happy for you.. what a relief it must be! :bighug: :bighug:

What a relief!!! I just read this thread, practically holding my breath. Tux has awesome parents who saved him. I can’t help but think of those who might not have acted fast enough. Tons of healing vines for Tux and rest for you and DH. Well done, Paula:bighug::bighug::bighug:

Paula, hope you took a picture of that humongous "petrified hairball", for posterity's sake. :)

At the time I didn't think about asking them to see whatever they find.

When I called to check on him, I said I have a weird request, did anyone take a picture so I can see it. The women laughed. She said we save everything they take out cuz parents want to see it. She even said I can have it. It would be strange if I didn't ask.

I once took a picture of a gigantic hairball hocked up by one of my previous kitties. I think the thing was something like 8 inches long, I have no idea how she did it!

I called to check on my baby. They said he was doing well but still not interested in eating. I know he is probably not feeling the greatest but it been since Saturday since he's eaten anything and that is starting to worry me. I did bring his 2 favorite foods in for him. I did tell them if they think a feeding tube is needed, then do it. I will check on him before I go to bed.

Dr told me and they will go over it tomorrow, that there are things I can give on a schedule and of course food that's for hairball I should think about. Also being long haired, can do a lion cut every 6 months. I told her that any groomers near me won't do cats. She said Since "we are a customer" now. They can do it.

So anyone know of good hairball remedy?

Paula, I'm just reading this now. I'm so happy for you that Tux is out of surgery and it all went well. Thank goodness you acted when you did and brought him to the ER.

Lecithin will help with furball breakdown. They do sell powdered lecithin but I have used a bit of raw egg yolk (about a teaspoon) with one of my kitties who had projectile vomiting from a furball. After two treatments with the egg yolk in her wet food, she was fine. I only use it as needed.

And this is a link to a recipe to make dried egg yolk:

Great info above from Sonia.

I've used two different hairball remedies I learned about around here. I still use a small amount of Food Fur Life EZ Egg Yolk powder for all my pets. The first thing I tried was Vet's Best Hairball Relief Digestive Aid ($5-6 dollars for 60 chewable tablets). It comes in breakable tablets and did work (had to break up and mix in food; no kitty thought it was a "treat").

I have powdered egg yolk. Maybe I need to restart that.
