Hello! I'm not sure what to do here... It appears that food is definitely influencing Gizzy's #'s. I'm trying to only feed him at +12 when I dose him, but he's so crazy hungry so I end up giving him a little here and there. I know I need to try harder and eventually he'll get used to it (maybe I'll get ear plugs!!).

My question is: If he normally gets about 2.5 cans of FF per day and I only feed him twice a day, do I give him 1/2 and 1/2. That seems like a lot of food at one time... How do you guys feed?

I think I'm confused by the question. Are you talking about not feeding him within two hours of AMPS/PMPS, so as not to affect the test results?

Are you leaving the food out for him, so that he can free-feed? If not, that sounds like a lot at one feeding. But hard for me to know. We free feed, and Kitty is so confident he'll get food on demand that he eats just a little at a time!

I am a newbie here but I have two grazers at home. I have tried meal-feeding and it resulted in me being awoken at 3am and two very po'd kitties. I give 1 3oz can per cat at the AM shot and I pull it about 3 hours before I do PMPS. There are two nights though that I get home right before I shoot and then the food stays out all night. I can 't get around it and I refuse to starve my guys. That being said I make sure I give LC food at all times so I make sure it isn't too much of a factor. I think the biggest thing is to try and control how much they get a couple hours before PS. Good Luck!

I would test him at +12 and then feed him right after (so testing and feeding twice a day).

No, I don't free feed because I have 2 cats and Gizzy would eat both bowls of food for sure. He loves to eat!!!

Since his numbers are high, and the diabetes not regulated, then he needs more food. As I understand it, the diabetes prevents him from getting the nourishment he needs from the food.

I'm sorry I don't know more about your schedule. It looks like you've been adding little meals, between shots, which is a good thing. Multiple small meals are great for our diabetic kitties.

Can you do that?

I was feeding 4 smaller meals a day, but it looks like that is influencing his #'s.... So I'm going to give this twice a day feeding a shot! nailbite_smile I know there will be an adjustment period but hopefully they will get used to it quickly! I'm curious to know if it helps his #'s. I just can't get him under control this time.... Grrrr....

Lori, I know Gizzy has special issues because of his history, but I'm not sure what you mean by the food affecting his numbers.

I know people do lots of different things here. For us, feeding small meals helped us get that nice flat Lantus curve.

Maybe post tomorrow when more experienced people are around, and get more input before switching?

Hi Lori,

I would feed Witty twice daily right after AMPS and PMPS. She was always so hungry, (so I gave her more food than the other pets), when her numbers where high, because I was also told that the diabetes makes it hard for them to properly utilize the food. As we slowly increased the lantus her numbers slowly went down and so did her constant hunger. I did however only go down from 2.1 ounces to 1.8 ounces twice a day, so it wasn't alot. Just enough the help her not feel so hungry when her numbers were higher (yes we have a food scale). (We also fed raw food and 1.8 ounces is recommended for each 10 lbs of body weight, we tried to keep the kitties around 10lbs)

Well hopefully this helps.

i have a big kitty that wants to eat a lot - at the moment he's getting 1 can of Fancy Feast with shot and 1/2 can at +3 after i test him, both morning and night. He has to last from +3 til the next shot with just the treats, which i've just learned need to be tiny (like 1/4"x1/2"). The Lantus' action is best in the first few hours after you give him his shot, so you want most of the food then.

but i'm a newbie, so if someone with more knowledge tells you differently, believe them. ;-)

I think there are a couple of things going on. With some of the earlier feedings, it looks like there may have also been a bounce involved. In other words, you had a lower pre-shot, fed at around +4.5 and when you were testing, you saw numbers that were heading up from the previous cycle. I don't think that numbers were routinely being influenced by feeding at that time.

On the other hand, feeding later -- at +8 -- isn't generally advised. When you give a snack after the nadir, food can overpower the waning effect of the insulin. After nadir, the Lantus is beginning to wear off. It's at it's least potent in the cycle. So, it's possible the food does influence the numbers when you feed late.

Many of us do provide mini-meals during the first half of the cycle. Breaking the food into several, small meals helps to not overwhelm the pancreas.
