Hi, I self tested thai for about 1 week after being diagnosed until I could purchase the lantus prescribe by by vet. His numbers ranged between 312- 475 during the testing / non lantus week.

I began the lantus March 1st, being conisistent with timing and the doasge the vet recomended 1 unit 2 times per day. I was unsure of the dosage, so I posted the other day, and I was doing the syringe correctly. The only thing that has changed is I am using 9 live daily essentials wet cat food, instead of friskies, which is what i had been giving them before. i give them two cans (thai and two others) 2 x times per day. Dry food is limited to a place he can't get too. Last night he had a little canned salmon (not cat food).

I am perplexed as to why since I have started the lantus, his numbers are going UP? 490-511. Today I used the relion meter - same one I have been using since beginning and it register HI :o . I looked this code up and it said his numbers may be above 600 and to try again. I tested three more times and all the same. I gave him the regular dose, and came right here to ask WHAT IN THE WORLD IS GOING ON?? Has anyone else had this happen? What should I do ... give more insulin? Am I using the wrong insulin? I am really scared.
Thanks

I'm just a newbie and clearly not the best adviser, but someone will probably be there in a couple of minutes and be able to help you. Perhaps the insulin just didn't have time to kick in or something...? I hope Thai gets better soon.
I just wanted to say good luck.

Good Morning,

This happened to Gracie as well. Her high numbers were much higher on Lantus than before she started. The only thing I can think of is a bounce from the numbers getting lower than the body expects. I'm no expert, but initially, it seemed like Gracie jumped higher when her numbers dropped below what they were before insulin. 393 was the highest she got without insulin, and within a week, she was in the mid 500's. It just takes time for things to settle down. For me, she's had some great days and some high ones, but it's normally because she's had a low number, or I messed with her dosages. Again, I'm no expert, but I for one have had the same issues you're seeing.

The only thing I know for sure is to stay the course, and test more frequently if possible. The preshot numbers are not indicative of what's happening with her unless you have midcycle numbers to relate to. As I said, Gracie has very high numbers, but usually that coincides with a low number somewhere in the mix.

Good luck, and you're in the right place for support.

Jason

Good morning!
I'm sorry to hear Thai has such high numbers. It has happened to other kitties when they start insulin, like Jason says. It might be the liver reacting, similar to the way some FD kitties 'bounce' to a high number after a run of nice low ones. Probably the best thing to do is stay with it. Get as many tests as you can so that the dosage advisors here can better guide you and Thai to the right dose. The sugar dance requires a lot of patience and there will be good moments and bad ones. We're here to encourage you when things get tough. Hang in there, and remember to give Thai lots of love. This is a new, scary experience for her, too. :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Hi,
I'm not an adviser either, but I'm wondering about the canned salmon you fed - any possibility Thai could have gottn into some dry? Someone should be along soon to help.

welcome to Lantus Land!

It does take Lantus a while to build up in the system, so most cats don't see an improvement in numbers right away. It's possible that he needs a dose change, though. Can you check your spreadsheet link? I can't access it - make sure you "publish" it and give us that link. There are instructions here.

Thai's SS won't open. Could you please go back and look at how you have your access permissions set? Also, the link should not have the "...ccc?" part in it. (If it does, when other's open the SS, it is saved in our Google docs.) The link should have a "...pub?" in it.

Without being able to look at your SS, it's hard to know what's going on or whether a dose increase may be needed.

Analiese?? Is that your name...sorry to ask. Also sorry that I haven't welcomed you and Thai to LL yet. You've had some great suggestions from some of our experienced LLers and I think once they see your SS, they'll be able to give you some ideas. It's good you are asking questions. We are all here to support and help each other. Hang in there!!!

Hi Analiese, others have already given you info on how to fix your SS, I hope you will be able to fix it so we can access it. I know it's hard to see those high numbers, I got a lot of "Hi" readings when Tinkles was first diagnosed.

Just a thought....I did notice that you mentioned switching to 9 Lives Daily Essentials food. Did you check to make sure the food you are using is below 10% carbs on J&Bs list? The reason I ask is that I use the Tender Slices w/real beef in gravy for high carb (HC) food, that's one of the Daily Essentials foods and it is 24% carbs. http://binkyspage.tripod.com/CanFoodNew.html

Re: 3/6 Thai 600+ TODAY- ??? Update

Hi everyone- Thank you so much for all the replies, encouragement and advice. I did his evening dose tonight and it was 409  Not the best number, but I got a number and not a code. I ws relieved. Funny, this morning - after the 600 + reading- was the first time he ever followed us around and begged (he sits on his haunches like a dog) for food we were eating - and we were eating indian food, which is not like steak or chicken smelling. That also scared me. But tonight he seems the same old Thai.
I am so thankful for this site. I can't say thanks enough- I left this morning for church - super bummed about Thai, and came back to advice and encouragement when I needed it. I lifted my spirits and eased my anxiety.

i will work on my ss, i just set it up on friday, I must have missed a step.
