Its been a few weeks since I last posted.

Curry....Well, what can I say about my little spice girl. Diabetes is under control. We are still working on controlled exposures for intracat aggression issues. Progress is being made very slowly on that front.

1. Sid's fear has subsided since she's been on the Anitrane S. A noticeable difference. It doesn't sedate her at all. Great stuff and wish I had it when I moved into this apartment last October. Treatment is usually a min. of 2 months. I'll probably keep her on it until the girls are back together. Paws crossed on that one.

2. We are working on controlled exposures during meal time. Allowing the kitties to see one another while they are occupied with eating. Happy thoughts regarding food hopefully will translate to happy thoughts when they see each other. Its interesting.....Sid is indifferent when seeing Curry....Curry isn't completely relaxed yet when she sees Sid. They are about 22 feet apart right now. When both seem more relaxed, I'll inch Sid's food dish closer by 12 inches and continue the process until they can tolerate being about 4 feet apart while eating. The babygates are working great. I don't have to shut Curry in a room by closing the door.....just the gates which allow the kitties to hear one another.

3. Then I'll bring Curry into the living room and put her in crate while keeping them both entertained.....that's gonna be hard. For one, Curry doesn't like being in the crate......training her by giving her treats intermittently while she is in it......This whole process isn't the best for a diabetic cat who needs to have her calories monitored....oh well.....Then I'm to slowly bring Sid closer to Curry's crate.

4.After the crate controlled exposures, Curry will be on a harness/leash in the living room w/Sid. Of course, I will be on the other end of the leash. I've trained her to accept me putting the harness on her. Again with lots of treats. We may even go outside w/it

5. The vet also suggested putting mothballs in the bushes to keep the outside cats from walking there. Geez......They stink!!!! I've also bought StayAway. It is an aerosol can that has a sensor on it. If an outside cat comes near it...it will beep and spray a burst of air scaring the cat away. The vet sd. to leave it there for about 3 months. I haven't put that out yet since the mothballs seem to be doing the trick. Oh do they stink.

Re: 3/6 Curry AMPS 112 crate training

Good morning, Tena!

I've wondered how things were going with Curry and Sid. It sounds like you have a really good training plan in place. Hopefully the treats and exposure will work some magic for your girls. I wouldn't worry too much about the calories at this point... Curry's numbers are good and it's more important for the kitties to learn to get along.

I had to laugh about training Curry to accept the harness. I tried that with Chaos when he was a kitten. Once I got the harness on him, he'd lie limp on the floor and refuse to move. Even dragging him a few feet across the carpet got no response. Passive aggression at its finest! Obviously I gave up on that one.

Re: 3/6 Curry AMPS 112 crate training

I dunno about the mothballs. Mothballs are toxic to cats. If a kitty should eat one, it's an ER trip, for sure. Here are some alternatives:

1. There are many herbs that cats don’t like to be around, including lavender, rue, geranium, absinthe, and lemon-thyme. Also, a German professional gardener, Dieter Stegmaier of Essingen, has created a hybrid so repulsive to cats, they stay a yard away from it. It smells like schnapps to us, and is actually a pretty and hardy plant with blue flowers that bloom throughout most of the summer. Its Latin name is Coleus canin.

2. This mixture is easy to make and can be used anywhere you want to repel cats (or groundhogs, for that matter): 2 parts cayenne pepper, 3 parts dry mustard, 5 parts flour. Simply mix together and sprinkle.

Re: 3/6 Curry AMPS 112 crate training

Violet.....I've heard of kitties doing that when a harness is put on them.....too funny.

I used clicker training to get her to put her head thru the harness opening. Then when she was comfortable doing that I put on the harness had engaged her in a fun activity.....like throwing her treats and having her go get them. She got use to walking around w/the harness.

Sienne....thanks for the suggestions. Probably use the cayenne pepper mixture along w/the Stay Away to keep the outside kitties from wandering in the buhes next to the window.

Re: 3/6 Curry AMPS 112 crate training

Hi Tena,

Good to see you. You have a good structured plan in place and that is key. Curry is looking good in the # department too. The crate probley feels safe to Curry so don't feel bad for having her in it.

I have always heard too that moth balls are toxic to cats. If they are left in like a closet with them breathing them in could kill them. I'm surprised [sort of] that your vet would recommend them.

Good luck with the training. Hope you see lots of steps forward.

Curry went from being Posh Spice to Scary Spice!

best of luck with the program, Tena...what a great bean to go to the effort...but we already knew that about you!!

Re: 3/6 Curry AMPS 112 crate training

Hi Tena - it is good to see a Curry condo. It sounds like all is going well. The plan sounds good too - I wish you guys much luck with it, and really hope that they can be together soon. Curry is gorgeous btw.

Re: 3/6 Curry AMPS 112 crate training

wow, what a lot of work but it sounds like it will pay off. I'm impressed that you were able to get Curry into a harness! I have one cat who I think would like to go on walks outside and I've thought about getting him a harness. And Lucy could use the exercise, but somehow I just don't see her cooperating.

Re: 3/6 Curry AMPS 112 crate training

Hey Tena, It all sounds good and I hope that it will work for Curry and Sid. Rusty has a harness. We haven't used it yet, but Phoebe had no trouble at all getting him to wear it (she used it for the car). We plan to use it when the snow melts and we take him outdoors for the first time. Don't want him running off after some bird or mouse or chipmunk or bug!

I thought it was 5:00pm when I shot Curry. Nope, it was 4:00pm. Will test her a little more often tonight to monitor.

I might just keep it at this time for the rest of the week since I'm gonna have to adjust the time again at the end of the week. I guess I'll just have to come home early from work, test and shoot, and then go back to work. I only work about 7 miles from home which is good.

On a brighter note, we tried the harness and leash today outside with Curry today. When the pollen gets too high we won't go out due to her asthma, but for now its nice. We went about 4-5 yards....smelling all the way.

Hi Tena, so nice to see a Curry condo! She is a gorgeous cat, I love the pic. It sounds like you have a plan....I hope it pays off and you can get the girls to play nice!

On the shooting an hour early...good plan to monitor closely, hopefully it will be a non-event. Have a good night!

getting ahead of daylight savings time :-D

binks has 3 harnesses...when he first got them he would just flop on his side and dare me to drag him...(and he was hefty back then)
but now he loves them cause it's the only way he goes outside.

his favorite is his work harness...which he got a chance to wear again for the first time since his DX recently...
he laid on it and purred until we buckled it on!

oh oops. hopefully it will be a non event. at least now you won't have to worry about the time adjustment at the end of the week.

How great that Curry likes the harness - what fun. I can just see that little nose sniffing all the way. Mannie loves the outdoors. he will sit on the lawn and just sniff and sniff. It's fun to watch.

Have a great night - it was good to see you in LL this week.

Definitely hope a non-event!! You have been doing an amazing amount of work with those two girls. I am positive it will pay off if Curry-Scary spice will be a good girl   Sure have missed your condo!! Hope all is well with you.
