yesterday/last night

Well, that was a bit of a roller coaster ride last night. As she would not eat her breakfast, I missed this mornings's shot and erred on the side of caution. However, she has since had her normal breakfast a bit later, plus some olive oil to help things move along. I have been waiting to speak to my vet for the last 2 hours, a very unhelpful receptionist would not put me through so I will just have to wait until she calls me, probably at the end of this morning's appointments. I think Crystal must have passed a poo judging my the state of her britches, but I can't find it (no doubt the dog will though). She passed two very hard round bullets last night but it looks like the last session, wherever it is, was much softer. (great discussion for breakfast time!).
Hoping all will be well for tonight's shot, she saw some good blue numbers over a 13 hour period yesterday but I think I panicked (not used to this colour) and thought she would go too low, coupled with the vomitting and constipation, I just felt like I was running around like a headless chicken. Sorry everyone. So now she is bouncing and I'm not sure how long it will take to get back on track. I realise I still have a tremendous amount to learn and the first lesson is STAY CALM and breathe deeply! a big thank you to all who offered advice and support.

vines to all other kitties with poo problems, there seems to be a lot of it about at the moment.

Vet telephoned. we had a long conversation and I described all Crystal's symptoms and what has taken place since i spoke to her yesterday. She didn't think it was necessary to bring her in (first time I've ever heard a vet say that, they usually have the $ signs clicking up!), to carry on dosing with the olive oil and when I mentioned Miralax, she said I could buy it in the pharmacy, so I shall pop out later and get some. She also mentioned that they had a locum vet in the surgery who had experience of acromegaly and she had reviewed Crystal's file out of interest. Apparently my vet has now come to the conclusion that acro is underdiagnosed (I told her that 5 months ago) and they are now going to test for acro with any cat that presents with diabetes (bit of overkill but at least it's a move in the right direction here). If I feel Crystal needs to see a vet tomorrow, this lady locum will be available. At the moment Crystal is eating well (and keeping it down), lying in the sun outside but no evidence of any more poos and generally seems a lot better in herself. Obviously her numbers now are bouncing in the mid 400's without any insulin on board but I hope she will come down once she gets her normal PM shot in just over 5 hours. I'll keep a close watch on her, she tends not to go too far these days and I know her favorite sunbathing places. Paws crossed she is well on the way to recovery.

So sorry you are having to deal with this :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Skooter just got his second enema this week last night and they were able to get what was blocked. When all this started he was pretty consistently in the 200s. My vet said that once they got this out, his numbers should return to normal pretty quickly, and they are coming down. He did not get his insulin last night as I opted to get him to the ER vet ASAP and this morning he was at 170.....pretty darn good!

I also added a probiotic to Skooter's meal. I am not sure how often Suki gets fed, but Skooter gets fed 5 times per cycle. His first cycle gets 1/4 tsp miralax, the second cycle gets 1/2 tab of cosequin and the fourth cycle gets 1/2 tab probiotic.

Sending poop vines to your sweetie and that she feels better soon...

Hi Suki

As long as Crystal is eating well and keeping it down and if you are going to be home to monitor, now would be a good time to use some R.
What do you think?

We have a poop!!!!! just brought her in for a bit of lunch and I could see that she had been as she was very messy. I'll still get the Miralax for future use though. Sandy, to be honest, I think I just want to leave her alone for a bit, unless you think that she is at a dangerously high level. I think I'm just mentally zonked out and want a bit of ordinary life for a day or two, is that okay with you? Thanks BJ, yes they are (antijinx)

I don't think her BG is at a dangerous level, however please monitor daily for ketones.
Her numbers will likely continue to climb today from the combined effects of bouncing from all that lovely blue and the skips.
So you know, you do have the option to use R to help keep a ceiling on her BG until her L depot refills.
If later today you decide you want to try and keep a lid on the rising BGs, try 1.5uR, anytime between now and the next shot.

So glad things are 'moving' again for Crystal

R is always a nice resource to have in situations like these. But I understand why you just want to leave her alone for a bit as well.

That streak of blue looked so nice yesterday!! I'm glad she's eating and "moving" along better.

You're making great progress with Crystal! Don't lose your momentum! :)

Whew! What an extra long day! Big sigh of relief here too. :bighug:

Miralax may or may not be called that in France. In Canada it's Restoralax. But it's polyethylene glycol 3350 powder.

Interesting on the vet now testing all diabetics for acromegaly. That's a positive step. I've heard the test in England is free, here it's in the hundreds by the time you add shipping so it's not something done very often.

I hope your head stops spinning soon :) it is incredibly hard to stay calm when your fur baby is in trouble. I think you did a great job. Yay for poo!

We are very glad that Crystal is doing much better today. Good job getting her in to the vet and good news that the vet appreciates what you are doing for Crystal.

Have a great day,

Ella & Rusty

Hi Sandy, Suzanne, Marilyn, Liz, Wendy, Serryn & Ella - thank you all for checking in today for Crystal's progress and for yor continued good wishes. I took the afternoon off from all things catty and went and murdered the weeds, Crystal was beside me in the shrubbery and found a sunny spot. I just didn't feel I could put her, and me, through an R test today. Best left until we are a bit more mentally prepared. Anyway, had to add a little of the felix gravy into her normal raw chicken mix tonight at PMPS to make it a bit more interesting, not a great appetite but she ate enough for me to dose her with her normal 45u. She has been running in the 400's all day but I haven't tested too much, just left her to her own devices. Tried to clean up her rear end, but she wasn't too happy about that, so little and often as she is a tad smelly! It's been a lovely spring day today and when I do the R I have to keep her inside to make sure I can test hourly, so that was another consideration. All four kitties have been sunbathing and finding their favorite spots to chill out and watch me and DH work like beavers in the garden.

Wendy, I paid about 70 euros for Crystal's acromegaly test to be done. Looks like my vet has gone from "no, it's too rare" to testing every diabetic cat, but c'est la vie!

How long should I stay at this dose now, taking the missed doses and the blues into consideration? I certainly don't want to change anything until after Monday evening but think I might have to hold it for longer - what do you think guys?

Hello again

The rule of thumb for cycle counting is if you give a fur-shot, reduced dose or skip, the cycle count starts over
Looks like my vet has gone from "no, it's too rare" to testing every diabetic cat,
Hmmmmmm. . . . .

Glad Crystal is feeling better - sending vines for 100% normal appetite her way.

Crystal darling, the 4th floor is not for you - you have 'been there and done that'. At your earliest convenience please find your way to the elevator and press 'Down' . . .;)

eta - and make sure it's not the 'express' elevator, OK?;);):p

Tina, thanks for looking in, yes it was an interesting experience, hopefully not to be repeated too often.
Sandy, thanks for confirming dosage cycles, I take it it's 8 then?, that's fine. She has been coming down, fairly gently to the mid 300's. Eating well at +4.5, grooming and now snoozing and looking much brighter all round. I think it's safe to say she is nearly fully recovered. I'm going to call it a night now as all that gardening and fresh air has quite worn me out but if I get up in the night, as I usually do, I'll take the opportunity to test her. Thanks once again to all of you for your continued support and healing vines.

Wow, I just caught up on your recent ordeal with Crystal. I'm so glad your vet "saw the light". I guess, hearing it from another vet made a big difference.

I'm glad Crystal is feeling better. Too bad about the necessary bum baths, but I'll bet she's happier when she's cleaner. My kitties don't care much for them either.

Sending lots of good appy and good poo vines Crystal's way.

She may let you "mom cat" her and damp wipe with the occasional warm washcloth to help remove the residue.

Hey Suki

I've been off the board this week but was keeping up with Crystal through Julie, Wendy, and Sandy. I'm glad she had a poo and is doing better. It's always a big relief when they starting eating and pooing normally. I'm sure you both enjoyed the time off today. You can start getting her back on track soon.

We lived in Germany six years and often vacationed in a little house south of Carcassonne in a village called Quillan. We got addicted to the Corbiere wine. The French do not export the good stuff ;):):)

Hi Tricia, thanks for the good vines for Crystal, she seems a bit quiet this morning, probably due to the wild swings in BG.
BJ yep, I've been helping out in that way, nearly there.
Marje, hope you haven't been ill, nice to see you again. Yes I just thought she needed some chilling time without me hoffering over her every hour, as it was she choose to follow me around and supervise the hacking back of the old shrubbery.
We've been to Carcassonne too, stunning part of the country. It's a bit more flat where we are as it's primarily wine and cognac production and we're not too far from the Atlantic coast. Strangely enough we are more white wine drinkers, especially from the Loire region where we used to holiday before moving here. Have real trouble finding our all time favourite, Bollinger champagne, as about 90 per cent goes to export, daft idea. Not that we can afford it too often but it's lovely for a special occasion. Have to locate a bottle for when Crystal makes a sustained stay in the low blues, that would really be something to celebrate!
