Hey, Lantus Folk!

I'm on the run in between temp assignments tonight...
and this is totally OT- but I can't think of anyone whose opinions I would value more.

I just had a preliminary callback on a position as Practice Manager for Banfield Veterinary.
They are the veterinary practices associated with PetSmart.

Thing is...I know nothing about them other than what I've read online...
so am seeking input from the folks we trust most.

Any opinions, experiences...anything AT ALL to help me decide on my response.

I think you have a pretty good take on my values regarding our animal partners' care...
and while being a Practice Manager would be a dream job for me-
I have no desire to work with a group that is solely profit driven or has any
"ethical" issues- (ethical to me means that patient care and education comes first.)

Thanks in advance for thoughts and input, guys!

and love and healing to all from the Idaho Goofballs

OMIGAWD, that picture made me spew!!! Wish I had some input on your question but not in the know. Liz can hardly let me go to PetSmart unattended because they work closely with our local humane society and have pets for adoption there on a regular basis. I want to bring them all home, thus the inability for me to go to PS without a chaperone.

I know someone who works for them. I will ask her her impressions and get back with you!

Hi Celi,
This probably won't be of much help, but I'd just like to add that in the Petsmart in Plattsburgh NY they help out the local animal shelters with adoptions and the cats they have in the adoption area of the store always seem well cared for.

Good luck! I'm sure you would be an asset to their operation (if it fits in with your principles)

Hi Celi, I really love shopping at PetsMart and stopping in at the Adoption Center and loving on the kitties. I guess that is my input :-D on the store and Adoption Center. Gee I don't know about the Veterinary Center though. Hope you get some more input.

Re: 3/6 Binks OT- seeking input/opinions on Banfield Veterin

I have had only good experiences with our Petsmart and know a few people who have adopted pets from / through them. You would be a huge asset to their team.

Re: 3/6 Binks OT- seeking input/opinions on Banfield Veterin

Celi, I can't give you any feedback about Petsmart's veterinary services, but I do know that you would be an incredible Practice Manager. If you need any references, we will all be happy to talk about how valuable you would be to their team. And they would definitely benefit from your humor, cute pictures, and great poetry!

I don't have experience with the chain. Your post reminded me of an article I saw on Facebook from Veterinary Practice News, reprinted from Tampa Bay Times of March 6. A bulldog puppy died after going in for an ear cleaning due to having been improperly restrained. The clinic then charged her $600 for the treatment. After a necropsy, which proved that the puppy had been choked to death, the hospital will reimburse her for the value of the puppy and is reviewing procedures.

I just remembered the name Banfield after seeing your post. I think that this is the sort if thing that you, as an effective practice manager, would prevent from happening. Congratulations on doing well on your interview.

I use Banfield and like them fine. The vet I usually see is young, but willing to research if she's not sure of something, so that's a plus. The staff at ours is friendly, knowledgeable, and really seems to care about the individual animals. They always shout or wave a hello when I'm in PetSmart shopping and ask how Mikey and the others are doing. They think it's funny that it takes 3 people to put Jesse James in his carrier. The only complaint I have is that they do tend to take animals to the back room to do procedures like simple blood draws and vaccinations rather than do them in the exam room where I can watch. But overall, I'm happy with them.

Re: 3/6 Binks OT- seeking input/opinions on Banfield Veterin

I have a friend who is a Vet that worked at Banfield and was fired when he refused to push un-neccesary procedures on clients. Morally I think I would have a hard time working there from various people's experiences. My ex roomie walked away with a $600 vet bill for a simple UTI on her 2 year old lab mix. I know you can find that sort of thing at any Vet, but I do seem to hear about it a lot with Banfield.

I have no experience w/that particular clinic Celi but major CONGRATS on the offer whatever you decide. I know you'd be a great asset...

but of course there is that I wanna take them all home risk!

I haven't had any experience with them, Celi, but I'll add to the discussion. You could turn all the negatives around in that position if you had the authority to do so. That's what I would want to know: how much authority would you have in daily operations, and to what extent management decisions are made locally or on a corporate level. I'd also look at BBB ratings, etc.

Good luck and big hugs from Mooks and me!

Re: 3/6 Binks OT- seeking input/opinions on Banfield Veterin

Eleven years ago this month, my DD (who was ten at the time) and I had gone to Kohl's to do some shopping. There was a Petsmart right next door and we decided to go there to look at the fishies, just as cheap entertainment. There were a bunch of cats in a glass enclosed room, in individual cages, and we went in just to pet them. This little beige kitty kept reaching his paw out and grabbing at my daughter, a little kitty who had been rescued from the streets. We took Champ home that night. I don't know anything about the vet services provided in Petsmart, but they do great things getting pets adopted.

I think Deb from Deb and Spot uses them all the time. I would send a PM to her.
