So today is the day. We find out Shadoe's IGF-1 results. I'll call the vets early and tell them to call me as soon as the results are received today. And let's just say that if I do NOT receive the results today, they would be wise to pack up and move, leaving no forwarding address before I get there after work today.

Shadoe's in pretty good spirits this morning; I swear I can see the relief she feels to be rid of those traumatic bloos! haha_smiley She is in her comfy pink zone and quite pleased with herself. There is a bounce in her step again, she's eaten her breakfast, and demanded snacks. I think she is in the process of planning some sort of attack on Booboo; she is watching her walk around here, so I hope Booboo does not come too close or she may get pounced on. I don't think it will work though; Booboo just went over to the LB and Shadoe followed, to supervise or sneak attack when Booboo comes out - and she's done both before!

With Shadoe's bloos last nite, I will need to think about when to use R and when to pass on the R. Because ECID, and I don't have Shadoe's results yet, I would like to see what can be done about getting a sliding R scale to fit Shadoe soon, like over the weekend so I can try it out. I have looked at Leo's first scale and also the ones in jojo's post 'starting r...' from last August, but there are differences so I would rather see what the experts say about which would be good for Shadoe. The most I have given is 1uR and some on the scales are higher.

What else. Oh, it looks like Shadoe got bored with waiting for Booboo to come out, so she just toddled off, BTB for Shadoe. That means it's time for tbp for me.

I'll post any news and/or results I get when I get them.

Edited to add: Super stinky LB deposit and nice +1 drop. Interesting how I get a nice drop with no R and other times, I get squat with the R confused_cat

Hey,
Good luck today!! My results should be in to. I am not sure if if nervous or excited or what. Its very nerve racking for sure. Tomorrow I will be trying R will Milo, so I post the results for you to see. CArolyn has us starting out at like .1 units, and test every hour until +4. WE also dosecreased last night to 11 units. Im glad to see that at least Shadoe still plays with her siblings. Milo doesnt anymore. Maybe because he is surrounded by all girls, who knows... Good Luck and let me know as I will keep you informed of Milo's results.

You know, a fair amount of us are just as anxious about the results as you! We have fallen in love with this dear Shadoe of yours, through such wonderful story telling. cat_pet_icon

Very nice night Shadoe has.
Today has been a long time coming and we are very anxious for the results.
And it's the weekend so lots of strategy can be made for her dosing, sliding scales...
and maybe insulin change.

Man I'm stressed out today. Two of my fav kitties on the board getting their test results today. (no offense to all you other wonderful kitties, you know I love you all) I've chewed every single fingernail today.

I'll tell ya, in regards to your comment about what would happen if no test results came in, I'll be right next to you kicking their door in! LOL I have cramps too, so you can imagine I would like something to take them out on. Wait I think I just told Cindy yesterday I'd never admit to cramps publicly. Oh well, we have a special case here :lol:

Alrighty, I called the vets around 10am and said check for the results NOW.
Of course, that got their attention and I was told they are not in yet.

I replied that there was NO WAY I was waiting for the results over another weekend, so they best make some calls to ENSURE the results would be available TODAY.

I got a call back 15min later to say that Dr. Steed said they called MSU and were faxed some tentative confirmation that the tests WERE being done today with the results being available sometime around 3 to 4pm EST.

I thanked the person and said I would be by to pick up the results at about 415pm, so have them ready. :lol:

If they are NOT yet in at that time, I'll possibly grab their phone and tell them to call now for the fax because I was not leaving without a number.
I will consider giving them a :evil: kinda look if any convincing is needed.

I live a block from the vets, so I will post what news I get shortly after 430pm or so.

Did you also tell them I have cramps Gayle? :lol: I'm with Linda here, I'm sure sending vines that the vet does see another Saturday without having to have your boot surgically removed from the nether regions!

You know, if it were my own health, I would not be so hostile, but something about medical people trying to mess around with my animals, or with my daughter when she was young, I go ballistic, if things don't flow nicely.

Already there are results today for Boo? Did you have to call MSU for them or did your vet get the faxed results?

MSU e-mailed the results to Dr. Lunn, who e-mailed them to me at 10:24 am CST.

The result sheet says 120 H

I take it that Shadoe is a little bit acro since the range is 12-92.

Now what? Oh yeah, no difference to what I am doing already.
Her pmps is in about 30min then shoot and feed. :YMSIGH:

Lisa/Mouf had a very low result (pretty comparable to your's, I believe). I can't remember if Jojo decided to treat him as an acro or not? There is another test, Growth Hormone, that is done at one university in Minnesota (I think)...it would be in the sticky. Or, you might just retest in 6 mo to a year.

I'm sorry for the diagnosis, but you've already got the attitude to do what you need to do, and you're building the dosing experience to deal with it, and you have a support system here (plus now you get to join the cool kids in the HD group too!). You're way ahead of the game already, and you're doing great.

And for your vet's sake, I'm so glad they got the results to you today! I was a little scared of what might happen to them if they didn't. :lol:

Thank goodness this wait is over.
I am not sure though if this means that Shadoe is positive for Acro?
Did the vet have any info to give you or just stared clueless into your face.
I hope now with these numbers you will know more what this means for you and Shadoe.

The vet was MIA; I think she is sceeeered of me, can't understand why! haha_smiley

Anyways, I walked in and just pronounced that I was here for Shadoe's results so please print them for me. I'll wait.

I did not see the point in waiting to talk to a vet who did not even know the tests existed and did not see the value in having them done. Seriously, what do you think she would have had to say to me that would be of any value whatsoever?
Exactly. Nothing. So I took my results and left. Later on, depending on how things go, I may consider asking for a referral to the specialist place, VECtoronto, and get them to have a look-see. If I wanted u/s or xrays or something, I think I would want to go to some specialists, you get what you pay for, so a bit more cost is not really a consideration.

I am not sorry about the dx. Why? Because you can't fight what you don't know.
I am sure there are a few of you who can relate to health issues where the 'experts' do test after test after test, and can't find the cause, so they can't treat the issue.
It is terrifying.

I have always stood by the statement that Knowledge is Power.
I am relieved and now we get crackin' to control the situation as best we can so that Shadoe stays as healthy and happy as possible.

A favorite expression of mine "Knowledge is Power" I totally agree with you.....
Anyway, you were treating Shadoe with what her numbers proved that she needed. There is nothing more to do except to continue doing what you are doing...but now you know that there is a definitive reason for high doses and R that you are doing.
You are really quite a wonderful advocate....you are totally correct in the way you are dealing with that vet office...and I am so happy that you finally got the darn results....

Sorry Shadoe's test was positive for Acro, but at least you know.

Not sure if you have already seen this or know about the use of Cryohypophysectomy, but you may want to check with the University of Guelph since you are so close. Not sure if the link will work so I basically copied what it said, not sure how you go about getting the full article.

A 10-year-old female spayed cat was diagnosed with acromegaly secondary to a pituitary tumour. At the time of diagnosis, the cat had insulin-resistant diabetes mellitus and its insulin-like growth factor-I levels were elevated. Clinical signs included polyuria, polydipsia and weight gain. Persistent hyperglycaemia and glucosuria were identified, and fructosamine levels remained elevated. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed a pituitary tumour. Transsphenoidal cryohypophysectomy was used to treat the pituitary tumour. Postoperatively, the serum insulin-like growth factor-I levels decreased and the diabetes mellitus was controlled with routine levels of insulin. To the authors' knowledge, this is the second reported case of acromegaly treated with cryohypophysectomy, and the first that reports a favourable long-term outcome. Cryohypophysectomy may be a safe and effective treatment for cats with a pituitary mass resulting in acromegaly.

i completely agree with this train of thought. I have sacrificed a lot, financially, at times to have an u/s or specialized labs done at the university. It's not that my vet isnt competent. And trust me, some of these things would be cheaper at her regular clinic. When its very important to get the most accurate information possible, you want to be dealing with people who only work with the certain conditions or tests, day in/day out. If your vet decides to be open to learning, a lot of time the specialists will consult with the vet. When I cant get something at the regular clinic, I go to specialist. Write up gets sent to regular vet, and they learn something. Im sure Ive ticked them off a time or two, but overall they know Im just looking out for Latte's best interest.

Im glad you now know for sure what you are dealing with. You are right, knowledge is power. I also think that once you know, its easier to be gentle with yourself and your cat when things get tough. There is nothing to blame - it just is what it is, and you do the best you can.

As Ive said before...you are a WONDERFUL advocate for Shadoe! I would love to have you in my corner any time!

Thanks everyone; it's great to know that we have such a strong, positive and knowledgeable support system here.

And Miriam, you know why Mr. Putty is tossing some red at you ... obviously, you need to up the attention you are giving, get more treats, and some more good foods. Also, he is just making sure you are paying attention haha_smiley
We all have bad days, and maybe Putty is having one too which shows as some reds numbers. Pats and cuddles can go a long way to Putty's feeling better despite those ugly reds.

When there are so very many, too many, vets that just don't know, we beans who do gather some info must share it all and in the most positive way possible. Animals are much smarter than we think, and they can sense the negative, I am sure of it. To keep yourself upbeat, it becomes contagious and the kitties can pull on it and feel better too.

Don't ever think that you should not whine because there will always the those better and worse off than you, with everyone having down days. I have had a good share of them where I seriously doubt what I was doing and if it was doing anything good at all. Others have come along to pull me up, and we will be around to do the same for you when you need it.

I know they have not been too helpful to you. Maybe you should look into those other
specialists, in addition to the incredible help you have been getting here.
