I'm so freakin frustrated :evil:
recap of vet visit today....

Again "don't BG test so often, theres no need, especially since he's off insulin" < I said I can cach any problems faster by simply esting 1x a day and Ruben and I do not mind at all. Again...same crap, there's no need. Suggested i bring him back for a fructosimean test instead.
Big long lecture about vaccines and how a bat can get in my house or how Ruben could scratch someone, then he'd have to be euthanized. How they won't do his dental unless I have him vaccinated. How its safe if I use the once a year rabbies vaccine Reccomended by the AFC < yeah right....(no offence to those who do vaccinate, but for me personally, I do not agree with vaccines.)

they say his lungs and heart so great so don't do x-ray unless it happens again. I wanted to still do a chest x-ray, but then he said why expose him to the radiation or cause more stress to him, when he thinks I should try a humidifier first. I kinda agreed but still wanted the x-ray but was so aggrevated that I just wanted to get out of there.
The vet started telling me that 200 is a completely acceptable BG # and that I shouldn't be hoping for numbers under 100. I said I am using an Alpha Trax but plan on switching back to Relion and again. Lecture on why not to switch back.... :evil: I didn't want to sign some paper work about allowing them to give him vaccines or treatment for parasites incase of hospitilization. That I want to know what and when they give/inject something into Ruben. Again lecture on why and how it's safe. That may be but I still want to know the when, why and hows then give authorization. Met with someone ready to fight before I had a chance to speak. It was a vibration in the room that was not warm or postitive.
Maybe I'm looking for the good girl for being so proactive in Ruben's care instead of lectured or discouraged or made to feel like I'm crazy, or maybe I'm hoping for a vet that doesn't exsist. Or maybe I'm looking for a vet that doesn't think that their word is law and has some flexability in caring with a pet guardian instead of being offended when an owner is not compliant. :cry: Can't they see I just love Ruben like they would any human.
Today just makes me love
(((((FDMB))))) that much more. Thank you guys for getting "it". Here i'm am encouraged for my care and love for Ruben, everywhere else I'm judged or condemned for it.

What are the legal requirements regarding rabies vaccination in your city, county, or state? You may want to follow those or risk someone reporting you for breaking the law.

It is possible to run titres to show immunity instead of revaccinating. Caution, these are more expensive and legally, may not be sufficient, because I'll bet any law reads vaccination, not proof of immunity through titre testing.

Print out the AAHA guidelines and give them to the vet. Say that you know how difficult it can be to stay up to date on every species and every condition, so you thought you'd save her some time by printing out the contemporary guidelines for treating feline diabetes. (Tactfully!)
 
it is RI law that cats be rabbie's vaccinated, and I get that, but for the vet to be pushy/take a tone with me b/c of my believes is not warrented.
I am by no means trying to push my believes onto anyone here, but like with FD there is a lot or risks people do not know of b/c of compliance. Education is key and for me the risk is not with vaccinating Ruben.

For humans RI allows 3 exemtions for not having your child vaccinated 1-religious, 2- health reasons 3- phylisophical, and people completely accept those but when you impose your same believes on your animals they think your crazy.
As far as the diabetis, For the most part I'm handling that on my own anyway, so not gonna bring it up with him if I can. I'm not giving up on finding a vet that "gets it" so I'll keep looking.
Again this post is not meant to be about vaccines, just about how I want a vet to understand my concerns instead of being pushy or argumentative for having them.
 
The problem with have an un-vaccinated cat is if the cat bites someone the cat may be required to be quarantined for ten days in a place other that your home. The worst case is if the person bit what to have the animal euthanized to test for rabies now.
 
All my cats are indoor too, and because of how many there are and the fiscal situation of the house mate, its going to be a while before I can get them all up to date on rabies. I'm not really concerned about it myself. And unless I were fostering or temporarily housing a stray, there'd be nominal risk of exposure. Plus, as I noted, it is possible to just test the antibody levels to see if they need to be boosted.

My vets are aware we are behind on vaccinations, but they are also aware that I lost a cat to VAS so they don't push the issue. Yes, I hope you find a vet soon that agrees with your mentality since it is not hurting your cat.
I know when I lived in Pennsylvania several years ago when my cat (Remi) had VAS, the vet there said they could write a letter of exception to him getting any more vaccinations.
 
The only vaxs that I keep up with on mine are rabies, and then the yearly one. Other than that I only give kitten shots to the babies and the first rounds to those coming in to protect my other cats as well from any new additions. My vet doesn't push she understands where I am with all of it and we work together to fine a happy medium. Also she understands that I'm a rare case compared to most of her clients in that I do research before I allow anything to be done to any of my animals, and I will also go the extra miles when it comes to treating mine. So I am one of the few that she allows to just call in and get scripts or do injectables at home. This also includes my own vaccines when I deem them necessary.

But then again I also recognize I have an extremely excellent vet and she is a rare treasure as well as my active partner in my animals care. Keep looking the good ones are out there you just have to search for them.

Hi Samantha. Sorry that your vet isn't on the same page as you pertaining to Ruben's care. Like MommaOfMuse posted, there are good and understanding vets out there but finding one can be similar to guessing the amount of bubbles in a bar of soap. Keep looking and researching, you'll find one. Maybe you can call several vet offices and ask if the vet will call you after or before office hours to discuss their thoughts of working WITH a care taker to ensure the best car for the cat. Have you asked friends with pets or their friens and family what their vet is like?

We're fortunate in that our vet is willing to listen to us. He never used anything bet Humulin N to treat FD and said he never heard of Lantus. Our visit was on a Friday morning so we asked him if he do some research on Lantus over the weekend and get with us Monday for a discussion. He did his "homework" and now treats FD with Lantus. When he diagnosed PF with FD he suggested to us that since PF was an old inside cat that we discontinue the vaccines.

As said earlier there is a vet out there that is right for You and Rubin and I wish you nothing but the best in your quest to locate him or her.

My kitties are indoor only. I also live in a high rise condo so there is no chance for them to get outside. I guess crazy things can happen and you never know. My vet is very understanding. I have two older sick kitties that haven't received any vaccines for about two years. My vet doesn't want to risk giving the older cats anything. My two younger cats are UTD on all their shots. I know that by law a rabies vaccine is required but I think there are exemptions for health reasons. I should really look that up. Larry does make a very good point. I'm really lucky to have a vet that really works with me and listens to me.

it sounds like you need to get a new vet. one that will work with you and listen to you, not fight with you.

when my girls get dentals, they are done by a dental specialist - board certified - not the general practice vet AND she knows that I will not allow vaccines including rabies any longer and it is not an issue or even a discussion or concern.

additionally, the dentist or any vet that I use will NOT vaccinate my cats without my permission or knowledge and if I were ever to find out that they did I would sue them for misconduct or whatever I can sue for.

regarding the diabetes, testing and such - you have bee here long enough to know what we think of that and you have tested ruben enough to know what he thinks of it.

honestly, there must be another vet in your area that you can go to that will work with you, vs fight with you.
 
(((Sam)))). I'm so sorry you had such an exasperating day. I also do not vaccinate although all the cats had their baby FVRCP and boosters. They are all indoor. It is a state law in AZ that they have a rabies vaccination but I don't do it and my vet doesn't push. We also lost a cat to Vaccination Site Sarcoma.

I hope you can find a vet that you like.n personally, I wouldn't even discuss diabetes with them. Just tell him he's a diabetic in remission, diet controlled, and move on.
 
How frustrating and unnecessary for you and Ruben to be subjected to unprofessional advice. It's so hard to find a good vet. Bo and I go tomorrow for the Lantus Aquatrak demonstration and since I'm taking the Relion too, we'll see how "flexible" he is and why. This doctor seems to go the extra mile on the side of caution and he calls back even if its late in the evening. I respect that but on the other hand I hope he's open to the Relion meter and wet food. If not,,,why? I need a rx for the solstar pen cause I'm switching from the vial since it doesn't last long enough. My pharmacist will sell me one pen at a time so that should help with the cost. Well, tomorrow should prove interesting. Wish me luck and I'll let you know what happened. And Sam & Ruben, hope things work out well in your quest to find a human dr instead of dr god. That's a tough one. You both deserve better. Much better. :cry: confused_cat

OMG! Ok well, your vet obviously doesnt know when a cat or human has asthma and doesnt treat it in an ongoing way, damage to the lungs can result. A humidifier will not do anthing for asthma :shock:
You are the one paying for the tests, what do they care? OMG expose him to radiation?!!!! Stress???? Its super stressful to not be able to breathe too!

Baloo the Bratty Blue Bear came into my life last may, and his former beans said he had asthma but hadnt had an attack in a long time and was never under treatment for it. UH Yea, and hes had a collapsed lung since 2007 because of that untreated "not a problem" asthma. Some cats can have it reinflate, and I was hoping that would happen when my vet told me about it, but then found in his old medical records that it was indicated in 2007!!
