Max started with a few sneezes last night and he progressed over night. Not good appetite. I think he caught something at the vet Thursday. My vet won't be in until Monday. I don't know who works today but one almost killed him when he was 5 and I'm not exaggerating. If anyone else works today maybe he/she would call him but I don't know.

He's drinking which is good and I did just give him baby food which he ate. I have cyproheptadine and could give a little and I know others use Zyrtec which I've never used. How much Zyrtec?

Of course we don't have a caregiver this weekend either so I can't even watch for changes. I'm scared.
 
Zyrtec dosage is ½ of a 10 mg tablet by mouth (in food…) twice daily, or about every 12 hours, try for 7 days. Watch for drowsiness or restlessness, although side effects from Zyrtec are not likely or are very mild. Use plain Zyrtec, or cetirizine, only—no combo meds. The fish oil product we use is AllerG3, or you can use human products. "

there is also a product called allerplex
Perhaps try Standard Process Allerplex? Rusty was on it for over a year and I thought it helped his congestion, but he is now refusing to take it. Marje recommends it. You can get it on Amazon. I opened the capsule and mixed the powder into baby food. It's worth a try and won't harm.

i would also try locking him in the bathroom with you and take a long steamy shower...... the steam might help loosen up the congestion.....
i'd even do it more than once a day.....

Thanks. I opened a can of ff turkey which I stopped due to CKD. I didn't even add any binder. He drank the water and left the food. I'm hoping he will at least keep eating Gerbers.

I gave him his insulin. He just ate the ff. Maybe I can get Zyrtec and ride it out. He's never had a virus or cold and never been on antibiotics or anything since being diabetic but nausea meds.

If you are giving Max cypro, I would not give Zyrtec unless you spoke with your vet or a pharmacist. Cyproheptadine is a first generation antihistamine. From Googling the interactions, it looks like there's a possibility that side effects could be considerably increased. Like I said, if this were my cat, I'd want guidance from someone who's knowledgeable about the potential for a drug interaction.

 
I agree about asking a vet before using Zyrtec. You could always call and ask who's on at the vet's office today. I'm not shy at all about specifying who I want to see at my vet's office.

I swear at least half the time I take my cats to the vet, they come home sneezing. It's frustrating.

@Sienne and Gabby, I'm not giving Max cypro now. I have some here from when he got pancreatitis but haven't had to use it. It's one option I am considering but thinking since just a sliver gets him eating more might not be a good idea and maybe zyrtec would be better.

@Amy&TrixieCat , none of the vets I would consider ever using work weekends unless by a fluke. I intend to call to see but I doubt I will be that lucky. One who will probably be there pierced his bladder when he was 5 and I won't let her near him. This is the one down side to this practice. I would have called yesterday afternoon but my vet now takes Friday afternoons off and he hadn't sneezed but a few times then. I was like you thinking pancreatitis. Now I wished I had called as the other vet I use was in I think.
 
Sorry I just posted in yesterday's condo. Zyrtec helps my cats when they start sneezing. My vet told me it was okay to give 1/4 of a 10MG tablet every 12 hours. Sending prayers.

Do you buy the ones that say 24 hour allergy?
 
L-Lysine has always been my "go to" product for sniffles with my crew. It's an amino acid that strengthens the immune system rather than just treating/masking symptoms. The dose is 1/4 teaspoon L-lysine powder twice a day.

My vet discouraged the use of zyrtec only because Alex had liver and kidney problems...
 
Sending lots of vines to Max and hope he stops sneezing and begins to feel better and to eat. We use L lysine, but Rusty has such chronic congestion that it doesn't really work on him. He sneezes a lot. I hope it will work for Max. It sounds like he caught a cold.

I used that with my Tiffany but I've read recently that it doesn't work. I'm so confused. I'm going to see if I can find the latest article. I just bought Zyrtec which of course I can return. My sister has Benedryl but I'm worried it will make him too sleepy. I can try and get to the health food store before closing for l-lysine as I'm pretty sure I gave it away. I'm at my mom's now. I didn't want to give him anything while I'm gone. Thanks for the info on Zyrtec. Lots on Tanya's use it.
 
Gabby foamed with Benadryl. Apparently, it tastes awful.

I've seen mixed reports about L-lysine. That said, it's helped with Gabby and Gizmo when they get the sniffles.
 
Jackson was sneezing more and more and more. I felt sorry for him and had never witnessed a cat sneezing so much. I got the L-lysine cat treats from the vet and his sneezing stopped almost immediately. I often give them to both my cats for the week before a trip, just to boost their immune systems.
 
Are they chewy or hard? I think I had them before too and both cats liked them. They were given to me. I was just looking on chewy and thinking of getting some when I order more food if I can figure out what food. The Nulo is too high in phosphorus.
 
I have had good luck with Lysine too! I just sprinkle the powder on their food and my cats have never had a problem eating it (even though this might not be the best solution if Max isn't eating much).

Here's the one I have used: Viralys Powder. If you go with Lysine, I would recommend two two doses a day.
 
So I bought some l-lysine and put it in baby food which he ate Yes, he will get 500mg twice a day. I put out some kangaroo but so far he hasn't budged from the position he was in when he got his shot. I also gave him zyrtec with his odansetron gel cap because I know the l-lysine can take up to a week to work.

I saw that too and decided it's best to give the pure powder mixed in food. It really is tasteless.

Thanks all and wish us luck. I still have to give him fluids which he hates and I hate to mess with him. So far a couple sneezes since I got home 40 minutes ago but he looks like he feels miserable.

He ate the kangaroo and it's too soon for the pill to have worked.:) Just hear another loud sneeze.:( Maybe he caught my cold?? I know impossible.

Sorry to hear Max is sneezing....Are you guys getting the warmer weather? Maybe he's got an allergy to something?

I use the Now Lysine on the crew here...just open the capsule and sprinkle! Must not have any taste because nobody seems to mind

I only have one vet I'll use at my surgery too - it sucks, why are there so many bad ones out there :(

Sending vines for Max. My civie started sneezing a couple days ago and I've been giving Lysine. He's not sneezing quite as much. I saw my brother today and he was sneezing, started a couple days ago. Hmm, sounds like pollen in the air.
