i have a question about treats - i was sometimes giving a bite of food as a treat, and i'm gathering in the second half of the cycle that's not ok. so i'm off this morning to Petco to find something different.

but my question is - how much quantity is considered a treat but wouldn't be enough to affect his BG? and is canned tuna not ok? i'm just asking because it's something i usually have.

Re: 3/4 punkin amps 221

Hi Julie! Canned tuna is ok as a treat, most people who use it that way give just a pinch. A treat should be just a bite or so, at least that's how I give treats. Even a tsp of food can affect numbers.

A lot of people use freeze dried chicken as a treat, they LOVE it. There is also other freeze dried meats, as long as it is 100% meat it's good. If you are buying it in Petco, I would go to the dog treat aisle and buy the bigger bag of FD chicken...it's more economical in the long run, and you can break it into smaller pieces easily.

Personally, I use boiled chicken breast as a testing treat. I boil a couple of breasts, cut them up into little cubes (1/4-1/2" or so) and put them in the freezer. I pull out small amounts at a time and keep it in the fridge. I give one piece each time I test.

Re: 3/4 punkin amps 221

ok laurie, thank you. i think i've been giving way too much as a treat after testing. didn't realize it should be so small. punkin is a bit of a moose and i'm sure he'll be looking at me accusingly, wondering why i'm cheating him.

Re: 3/4 punkin amps 221

Hi Julie and Punkin. I'm glad you asked these questions because it looks like i've been feeding Choco too much for a snack as well. I may even be leaving too much food out for him during the day. ;O/ I usually give him one can of FF in the morning and he'll probably eat half a can or a little more than that and then I leave a whole other can out for him to eat throughout the day. When I'm home at night I feed him his one can of FF and then around +4 I give him a hefty size tsp of FF. I'm still searching for some freeze dried chicken. All they had at my Petsmart was freeze dried liver. :O( Hope you all have a great weekend!!!

Re: 3/4 punkin amps 221

Hi Guys - For what it is worth.... I do the same thing as Laurie - Mannie loves the freeze dried stuff, and well as fresh cooked chicken. all of it is very small quantity when it is given as a treat. Petco sometimes too will carry the freeze dried stuff - but you have to look in the dog section - it is there. It will work for cats too. PureBites brand is a good one, if you can find it.

Re: 3/4 punkin amps 221 +3~196

i ended up buying some chicken.

Petco had dried, I don't know if it was freeze dried or some other way, but it's tough. i already had some jerky-like chicken that he won't eat.

that's ok, now i know what we're having for dinner tonight! ;-)

i'll be curious to see with the testing later today if his numbers are lower - i'm afraid that my idea of "not feeding him" after +3 brunch was probably still a too-big of a snack. i guess it's all a big learning time.

Re: 3/4 punkin amps 221 +3~196 +7~124

he's such a pig. i gave each of the cats a pinch in my fingers of canned tuna. of course, punkin was trying to get to Anya's portion . . .

and then Anya (not quite 2 years old) was feisty & wanting to kitty wrestle and i could see all punkin was interested in was licking around her mouth in case there were some tuna goobers left there.

Re: 3/4 punkin amps 221 +3~196 +7~124

ok, i'm thinking this is good! at +9 he's 147 - i think i was just giving him too much for a post-poke treat.

If I understand right, with Lantus it's important to get the lowest numbers of the day, so i'm thinking i need to do more testing in the +4-+7 range - is that right?

Today a workman was here making a ton of noise running a saw so I didn't think it would be good to test then. I'll try tomorrow to get some mid-day numbers.

Hi Julie!

Great set of numbers today for Punkin. And yes - it is impt to know the low numbers of the day (nadir). It usually occurs around +6, but can vary from cat to cat. Some have nadir at +4, others at +7, or +8. and it can change or shift as time goes on. That is one of the reasons why it is helpful to do spot checks during the day so you can determine what punkins nadir is. It would be helpful for you to try for a few more in the +4 - +7 range.

Oh fun with the workman... :-D Mannie would have hid.

I hear you on the dried treats that are tough as shoe leather. Mine won't eat it either. There is a freeze dried ones, comes in cube form that are much easier for them to chew. There are couple of brands - I think if you did a search here on the forum you'd find a couple of condos that discuss treats. Chicken is always good too. That has to be Mannie's ultimate treat. He goes crazy whenever he gets it. and yes - the food thing is always one of learning. I still am.

Have a great night, and I hope Punkin has a fantastic PM cycle.

thanks michele! i keep wanting to give you 2 LL's - my daughter is a michelle too.

anyway, punkin shot down the stairs like a little ninja when the doorbell rang. it was like he knew someone noisy was coming in. i suppose most of the time friends just knock instead.

i boiled a couple of chicken thighs and shredded them. told my husband the treats were supposed to be 1/4"x1/2" and he picked up a piece about 3" long (but perhaps 1/4x1/2 width) and said "so like this?" uh, no. like this tiny, teeny piece that punkin will think is just insulting.

but punkin loved it after his +9 test.

you have a great night too! we're having chicken for dinner! ;-)

  on punkin and the tuna goobers!

i like your sense of humor!

hahaha awesome pic! that's a pretty good resemblance of him.

back atcha on the humor! life is too short.

he's giving me the death stare to remind me (while i'm eating) that he is long-suffering and waiting for his dinner.

Punkin's got the fun condo tonight!!! LOL

I use the freeze dried treats for Willie... one tip: when you go to Petco, check out the dog treat section. You'll generally get a much larger package for a much better price. We also discovered bonito fish flakes this week, and Willie goes absolutely crazy for them. I just put a pinch on the lid of the container or on top of his fuds and he scarfs them down!

Numbers are looking great today! Hope you guys have a wonderful weekend!!

Lovely cycle for Punkin today....he's really turning out some nice numbers! We do the freeze dried chicken treats as well. I buy them in bulk via the internet. Have a great evening.
