I really don’t understand what is going on with this cat. He is now being fed 4 times per day and it’s not making his morning numbers better . The only thing i can think of is that maybe he is stressed from trying to break into th w auto feeder it all night? :(

Hopefully tomorrow’s curve may shed some light. I have a feeling this dose might be too high for him. He doesn’t usually “bounce” like this if his dose is right.

I agree with Bronx's Dad, without the mid cycle test it's a guess until you can get a curve tomorrow.

I just caught up on your previous condo. A few years ago I got my Abbot Precision Xtra Ketone meter on Amazon. It was a bit cheaper than it is now. The cheapest place I found the strips ( that 's what is expensive) was from Universal Pharmacy in Canada.

One way you can save is to switch to a human meter as the strips are so much less expensive than the AT2 strips. I use the Relion Prime and a box of 100 strips are about 17 dollars.

Good luck with the curve tomorrow and I hope that Frosty sheds some light.

As Bobbie and Paul both noted, mid-cycle tests will help to rule out a low number mid cycle followed by a bounce.

At what time in the cycle are you feeding Frosty? For some cats, if you are feeding after nadir, there is less insulin available to offset the effect of the food. As a result, numbers will go higher. It may be helpful to feed Frosty his last bit of food before nadir and if he's starving, put a snack in the auto feeder for later -- just don't give him a lot of food.

Since I haven't stopped by in a while, is there any chance Frosty has something going on medically? Might he need a dental? Dental issues can play havoc with numbers.

Is there any chance Frosty is finding contraband. Since he'll eat bagels, could he have a secret stash of high carb food? Are there any kibble eaters in the house?

It's hard to say what's going on with Frosty with the lack of mid-cycle tests. Hopefully tomorrow's curve sheds some light...
Thanks, I hope so too.

Yes, I looked for that ketone meter, but I think it has been discontinued as it’s not available on the Abbott website anymore, and third party sellers are selling it for much more. I ended up buying the Nova ketone meter, which I got free with a purchase of 20 strips. It’s crazy how much blood that meter takes though! I wasted 2 strips trying to get a reading. I think I’m gonna test him weekly or more if numbers look weird or he’s behaving weird, because I’m honestly worried I’m drawing too much blood from him with that thing.

As for the ReliOn meter, I have the ReliOn Confirm that i used on frosty for 2 weeks and I found it very imprecise. I have gotten such different readings on it, whereas with the AT2 numbers are always close. I also feel more confident using a meter calibrated for pets, because this is stressful enough as it is that I can’t be taking chances getting inaccurate readings. I honestly don’t trust the ReliOn after dealing with it for those 2 weeks. And Abbott is a very well known company in my field, we use their products all the time and i just trust it. I would rather spend a little bit more, at least for now where his numbers are so high. I’m hoping eventually I can test him less often, once he’s more stable. So for now we are gonna stick with AT2.

He eats at T0 and +6 , total of 4 times right now. Only FF 100% meat treats once in a while at testing time. I try not to give treats due to his constant begging as I don’t wanna reward that behavior l.

No, there is no way Frosty is eating anyone else’s food at this point. My house is like a prison now. My bf and I can’t even go through the house comfortably anymore, the doors and pet gates have to be up a certain way, dishes have to always be done, every crumb swept up. all the other pets have 15 minutes to eat before their food is put away and frosty is released. It’s getting crazy.

frosty has been to the vet 4 times in the last 3 months for check ups and there is nothing medically wrong with him other than his diabetes. He was recently on prophylactic abx for a wound in his skin (which was not infected), which has healed. He is behaving totally fine too except the constant begging for food, which is actually normal for him.

Just looking at my curves on him during the first month I had him when we had him on 2 units for like a week, I suspect the dose might be too high. I’ll grab a +4 tonight and do a full curve tomorrow. Thanks for everyone’s reply

I don't think this dose is too high. You had some good data on 1.5 units, and did a 0.25 unit increase, so not too large an increase. Looking back ages ago in time isn't helpful. Cats insulin needs can change over time. Only the last couple weeks data are worth looking at.

Good,luck with the curve tomorrow.
