Good evening,

we had a day with very high numbers again. :( I always wonder if I did a furshot because the same dose does nice curves in other cycles. After giving the shot I always test if there is liquid in the fur or I can smell the Lantus but there was nothing today. So why so high during one day and different on another? Thank god Ketones are still low (0.1 mmol/dl). After the shot tonight I can see the numbers slowly going down so I think it will be a better cycle.

Tomorrow morning I intend to increase from 2,5 to 2,75 as kindly advised by @Wendy&Neko. Thank you! I have to start a new cartridge with Lantus tomorrow. Is it a problem to go up with the dose and start a new cartridge at the same time?

I hope everyone is having a safe night and peaceful easter days! :bighug::cat:

Since Binie did come down somewhat this cycle, I expect not a fur shot. Typically you will smell the Lantus.

Do you have any reason to suspect the old cartridge was bad? Been keeping it in the fridge? If so then it's likely good and no reason to not increase. Plus it's not like his numbers are worrisome lately. :rolleyes: You can always delay the increase one cycle if you want, but then you are increasing at night.

Yes, there was no Lantus smell. I just find it strange that cycles are soooo different. Tonight she is making a nicer curve.

I think the cartridge should have been o.k. It was in the fridge before opened and then stored at room temperature in a dark place. I just used it seven days longer and didn't throw it away after a month. My vet told me that this is usually not a problem. I hope so.

And yes, her numbers are not to worrisome but I tend to worry very quickly. :facepalm: But this forum is such a help for me and I am so grateful for your advice! Thank you! :bighug:

You should always refrigerate the Lantus, Heike. Maybe that’s an issue.
Hope you have a good night and a safe surf! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

As the others have said, the Lantus cartridge is always to be kept in the fridge, even the ones in use. You might find it handy to mark in the spreadsheet Remarks column when you replace a cartridge. I found that sometimes it helped me keep track of hold old the cartridge was and figure out if my Lantus (then Levemir) was getting old. Normally I used a cartridge to the last drop, but if I travelled with Neko and it was in a cooler but not the fridge, it did impact how long it lasted.

Thank you @Wendy&Neko @Diane Tyler's Mom and @Staci & Ivy. That is a bit confusing for me as the manufacturer says it should be stored after opening by roomtemperatur and can be used for 28 days. I also read that cold Insulin gives an unpleasant senation to the cat and that it is not working as good. Do you put it in the fridge to use it longer than 28 days?

@Heike & BInie
That 28 day is for humans , one pen should last you at least 6 months kept in the middle shelf of the fridge. I used each pen to the last drop

Lantus/glargine is an insulin that was only tested on humans and humans use a considerably larger dose than cats. The manufacturer's tests lasted only 28 days since that's how long they assumed humans would need a prescription for.

If you are worried about it being cold you can leave the syringe out for a couple minutes to get to room temperature, but I never did and Tyler never minded it. It works just as good

Thank you for the explanation Diane!
