Hope I did that right - posting previous link. Anyway, its been 3 days I think since Otto's last round of fluids and he's ravenous as always, good blood (kidneys etc), no ketones, peeing alot and lost some weight last week. It looks like its time to up his dose again. Still dont know what caused the intense session of dehydration and higher numbers - is the right word symbiotic? In my lap purring away but I can tell he's a little weak from all the rough week. Thanks for any input. Ill be getting more consistent numbers hopefully.FDMB Basket RaffleTech Support 3/25 amps 626, +6 416 at vet getting fluids - need advice

Not quite, but good try! Here's your Condo from 3/25

It looks like he could use more juice, but it's also important to make sure to get at least one test on the PM cycle. Even just grabbing one as you're on your way to bed at night will be really helpful! Most cats go lower at night and if he's going low, he could be "bouncing" on the AM cycle and we'd never know. It would just look like he's still too high. That "before bed" test can also let you know if you might want to set an alarm to get another test in later.

I'm sure you'll hear from others as the day goes on with their opinions too

I just got back in town - my vet tech was supposed to be doing it but he failed on alot of levels!! Ill start getting them.

I hope you had a good trip away. I'm sure Otto was happy to see you back.

I agree with Chris that it'd be good to get some night time tests now that you are back. On the 28th, it looked like he was breaking his bounce and could have gone lower that night, resulting in a black next morning. That isn't to say he went really low, just lower than he's used to. Today he also seems to be coming down. Unless he sees green tonight, I think you'd be OK going up to 4.5U tomorrow morning.

I dont know if you saw my sidemarks that he's been to the vet 3 times last week for fluids. Didnt know if that was what was causing the spikes and once he got through that (hopefully now) he will level out a little.

I'd forgotten you were out of town too...I'm sure Otto was happy to see you home again!!

I thought the vet tech was supposed to do some fluids at home? Did he/she decide to take him into the vet instead of just doing them at home?

well, right before I left I took him, then since the guy was going to work anyway, yes he took him twice. Fluids were delivered for the weekend just in case. I just made my broth and he drank almost a whole cup. How much can I give him? He sees it as food so he scarfs it down.

I'm not sure about how much to give, but you want to make sure you don't fill him up with water to the point where he won't eat when you need him to

I think it's @Bron and Sheba that had been talking to you about the broth...Hopefully the tag will get you some advice on "how much is too much?"

Many people just add water to the cat's food - as much as the cat will tolerate and still eat it. Does the broth have much salt in it? I'd be a little leery of anything more than what an ordinary cat food would have.

Is he flooding the litter box? ie, is he drinking/taking in plenty of water but it's just going through him too fast? On the second tab of your spreadsheet there are standard lab tests listed - if you have any recent labs it might be good to add them in. One thing to check is if your vet is using IDEXX the reference range might be different, which would mean changing the #s in the reference range column. Those are the numbers that tell you if a lab test is normal or not, and they vary based upon the lab.

Putting in your labs is easy. You just put the date of the lab tests in the top of one of the columns, then click your cursor into the cell you want to use. When you're done with entering the #s in, just click into a new cell or hit return and it will leave your info in the cell you were working on.

I just saw your last post - since he's been losing weight, you want to let him eat more. He shouldn't be losing weight.

When you made the broth, did you just use the chicken bones and water........nothing else added, no salt?It is important no salt.
I add water to the food and then give the broth after all the food is eaten if I think Sheba needs more fluids. I usually give her some each day. I probably don't give a cup full but it probably won't hurt if Otto is drinking it willingly. But make sure he is eating his food first.
You will get to know how much fluid to give him and hopefully will help correct the dehydration problem.
I agree with Julie. Make sure he is eating more food first. The broth doesn't have many calories; it is great for fluids though.
let us know how you go. Am so pleased he likes the broth. Sheba loves it. I use it for when I do the BSL tests

so get this - amps 292!!!!!!!!! last nite at 10:30 he was 361. Im giving thanks to the chicken broth for keeping him hydrated. No salt added - just broth and last night he probably had 1 1/2 cups total. Got no idea how to dose him.
