Good Morning Everyone,

Not such a great start to the day: first of all it took 4 pokes to get even the tiniest amount of blood; second, it may have been a fur shot; third, I'm not sure if the new cartridge of insulin is good. I didn't smell Lev. and I didn't feel wet fur when I gave Rusty his shot, but I didn't feel the needle go in or come out, either. When I smelled the paper towel where I squeezed out the excess insulin from the syringe before shooting, the Lev. smell was much less pronounced than with the previous cartridge. Does anyone have an explanation for this? Does Lev. smell less if it isn't potent? Or does it smell more when it begins to lose its potency? (The old cartridge was 48 days old and the insulin smelled very strong; I can't remember what it smelled like when I opened it!). Oh well, it's always something!

Rusty is fine this morning, despite the rather high (for him) AMPS. He gobbled up his Wellness turkey (ate 2 sittings in 1!--no doubt making up for yesterday). (Today I will call Wellness to find out how to return my questionable cans.) And we had a pretty good play with Red Ears, Big Bug, and Octopus. Mighty cold here this morning: -15 F. Quite a contrast from NYC!!

Back later, thinking good thoughts for our kitties who are not feeling well.

Brrrrr, Ella! Is spring ever coming to you? Do you want it to? :lol: It's cold here in OH but nowhere near what you've got.

I'm not sure about the cartridge, sorry.. and the rough start to the day. We all have days like that, sometimes you just have to push through them. I'm glad to hear that Rusty is his usual self, though, eating and playing again. I bet Red Ears was getting lonely! Have a good Fursday- I hope the day improves from here on out. :YMHUG:

It's freezing up by my part of the world, it's been hard to get blood from Tray's ears so I feel your frustration.

Not sure about the Lev smell. Our pen is over 30 days and it still smells strong, maybe the pharmasist would know something?

Morning guys! No clue on the Lev and the smell question - I hope someone knows. Tough start this morning - I cringe on days like that, ones where it takes one too many pokes to get a sample. Mannie's good about it, but still....

OK, that is darn cold! -15F? we are at 35F, that must sound like a heat wave.... I feel for our canadian friends where I have heard it was -21C yesterday. I cannot imagine how bitterly cold that is.

I need to call wellness too....

Hi again,
I just called Wellness: had to read off the UPC code numbers from each batch. They are going to send me coupons. I had 15 cans. They said not to send them back, but to throw away the food.

Guess what, there's a x-country ski on for this afternoon, so I'll be going. The temp. is already up to +6 and there is brilliant sunshine.

Just saw your question about Lev. I have never heard that the smell changes, in fact I don't think I have ever heard of Lev "going bad" ever! Ocassionally it appeared to become less effective and the user tossed it began a new one although no color/smell/or clarity changes were noted. I can tell you that I just found an opened Lev pen in the fridge that is over a year old and is even past the expiration date (1/2011) and I smelled it for you. It stills smells like old rubber truck tyres, I'm not going to inject myself and tell you that I went all hypo though :-D but I have taken acetominophen that was 5 years past the date and I'm still alive (notice I didn't say NORMAL though ohmygod_smile ) I think you have to decide based on your observation of the BG numbers.

Things are good, we have sunny skies, no snow and about +5°C (at 5:00 PM) the only bad thing is the cold east wind. Supposed to stay nice all next week too. Did I mention...my employer is actually the family of König Ludwig II (the Wittelsbacher equity fund) so things are really good in Bayern!

No real answer, but perhaps the smell dissipated after being on the tissue? Sometimes I'm sure I've screwed up the shot and I haven't.

Hope you got your skiing in. It's beautifully sunny here too. Supposed to be 40 tomorrow. That's probably too hot to ski. :lol:

I agree with Monique, Ella. I haven't noticed a lighter smell when I first open the pen. It is an analog actually....unlike the insulins that are made from beef or pork, etc. I think it smells the same whether it is new or old. Very distinctive odor, isn't it?

I have tossed the perfectly good pen at 6 weeks just because I thought the numbers were weird. But, I am sure it was just the way Shadow was with his numbers. They were pretty awful whether it was a new pen or an old one....but 6 weeks was the most I used the pen. Others have gotten more time out of the pen. But I never heard anyone say anything about the odor fading....or getting worse.

Thanks for the observations on Lev., Monique and Pat. I got the same observations from the people in the Lev. forum, where I posted my question today. Tonight's shot certainly went in, and although I still think the insulin doesn't smell as strong as the last cartridge, it does indeed smell. Tomorrow I plan to smell some from both cartridges. Not a good idea tonight since I was out skiing in pretty cold (but beautiful) weather this afternoon (my sense of smell might be affected!!).
Judging from the +5 and PMPS numbers, I think Rusty may have seen green today.

Celi, I love the Goodman recording of "Sing Sing Sing". When I was in high school (I played clarinet and tenor sax) I used to copy his clarinet solos. Krupa's tom tom playing on this recording is fantastic. Thanks for the lift!

The ski today was fine, even though the snow was crusty (apparently we had rain here on Monday) and our poles kept getting stuck in the crust (the snow underneath the crust was fine). Then we had an impromptu party at the home of the couple who led the ski. (As you know, a "party" is defined as a gathering with food and drink.)

Nice numbers today! I don't think you need to worry about the pen.

The whole point of skiing is to get together an eat afterwards! :lol: :lol: :lol:
