Re: 3/3 Pepper AMPS 224, +3 240, +5.5 186

Hello there

Tiggy Bailey and I thought we would come in for a visit. Did you ever test for acromegaly? Think Tiggy probably has it but I havent bothered testing yet and am just increasing the insulin.

How is Pepper feeling? How are the 5ps?

and how are you doing???

Wendy

Hi Wendy! Thanks for dropping by. No, I haven't gotten Pepper tested yet. I'm just increasing too. Pepper seems pretty happy - We've got 4 out of 5 Ps - he doesn't really play much anymore, but he does enjoy going outside and sitting on the deck. I think that's close enough to play for a cat his age. I enjoy reading about Tiggy in your condo. He's a cutie. How is Bonnie the bunny? I had a bunny when I was a kid. Our cat Chippie used to straddle Bunny and sit on him while he chewed on his ears (Bunny was as big as he was , or bigger, and didn't care). He looked like he couldn't believe he caught this giant rabbit!

Lovely day for Pepper today. These nice cycles seem to be happening more often now. My acrocat loves the deck too.

Bonnie is doing surprisingly well.. We really thought we were going to have to put her to sleep this week given her breathing was so bad but she has made so much progress we are pretty pleased and grateful for every day. At 12 years old she is a fairly old rabbit.. That's 87 in human terms!

Hi Nancy,
The new dose is looking good; it's nice to see a blue nadir on the 20u.
I wanted to ask if you have had your vet give a check to Pepper's heart.... acros do have issues commonly with their hearts, and it would be good to read up on their other weaknesses so that you are prepared if Pepper runs into other health issues.

It's been found that treating sooner rather than later - if going for SRT - makes for better results.
If not planning to go for SRT, you want to keep a close eye on the organs.
Cardiomyopathy is a common issue and some think starting cats on Lasix is something to consider if heart issues are found.

Re: 3/3 Pepper AMPS 224, +3 240, +5.5 186, +7.5 240

Hi Gayle. Pepper hasn't seen his regular vet since September, but he saw an ER vet in November. I don't know how well they might have checked out his heart. The next time I take Pepper in I'll make sure it's checked - along with getting the tests for acromegaly and insulin resistance. I'm not sure that SRT is something I can really afford. And it would be easier for me to go to UC Davis if I were able, my sister lives nearby, but that seems to be twice as expensive as Colorado State. Just not sure what I can do. Is it really a good thing to haul a nearly 15 year old cat across the country and put him under for 3 or 4 days? Have any of the cats who've had SRT been as old as Pepper?

Hi Nancy, one of the things you might want to investigate is something called a Care Credit account. I know a couple of people who used that as a way to finance the SRT treatment.

Neko just had an echocardiogram a little while ago. Even though she's had SRT, the vet found a heart murmur on the last checkup. Turns out there was very little change due to the acromegaly, but now I have some piece of mind and a baseline of what her heart looks like. If you don't go for SRT, a baseline echo will tell you if there are further changes later on.

Hi Nancy & Pepper, if I didnt read the previous post, I'd be so happy to see Pepper in a flat yellow curve. Sure you are worried about the high doseage but give Pepper's happy & 4 out of the 5 P's there, it's pretty good.

Nancy,
I know what you mean about affording. With two acros, there was no way I could have afforded to go for SRT with just one, nevermind two. I just did all that I could and watched out for the signs of issues relating to progression of acromegaly. I made sure the vets gave a good listen to the heart as there was a mention of Ollie with a murmur earlier.

As for age, I believe Norma's Tony was 14yrs when he went for SRT. You can check with her about age issues and SRT as there were some.
