Good Morning LL

Checkers is a bit subdued this morning, possibly due to the frightening sounds of the horrific wind, or maybe my anxiety.
Maybe the barometric pressure causes him pain.

Which brings me to what vet told me yesterday.
. She was shocked at the fact that he can drop into 30's one day and stay pink another.
We agreed it could be pain from his arthritis in his spine..

She has clients using Duralactin on their arthritic cats, with good results.

It is also sold in different brands as microlactin
Anyone here use it? It's a milk protein and is also for human use.

I didn't start the lev yet, simply because I can't deal with something new, when I'm fearing my home is going to blow away. Well okay, just the roof.

Oh yeah, WCR for today. All is fine.

edited to shorten.

Hey Checkers! it's your buddy Rupert, I see your 380 AMPS and I raise you a 405! sigh. these boys huh? hope they both slide down slowly today! have a good one!

Re: 3/3 Checkers amps 380+2/296

Morning Brb - omg on your weather.. that sounds just awful. I will be thinking of you today - hope the day porgresses without incident.

Very interesting on the pain being associated with Checkers BG. That very well could be a factor. I wish I had advice, but it is something I have never had to deal with. No Clue on the meds either. Good luck with it all, and the Lev. I look forward to seeing how Checks does with it all.

Re: 3/3 Checkers amps 380+2/296

Haha Pip, Checks was up in the 400's on his +1. I just didn't post it, cause it was a food spike and expected.

Michelle, I know that pain raises bg, but did not feel comfortable giving long term, any of the pain relievers that I researched; after all, I can't prove at any time, that he's in pain...it's just my feeling, based on his body language.

This one, being milk protein based, sounds safe. Even if it's got carbs and probably does, I have to weigh the benefits for pain relief against the neg of the carb count. My choice is always to relieve pain, of course.

The main ingredient in Durolactin, is microlactin, which I see is available everywhere.

No answers from me on the med, but I'm with you the side of releasing pain. You can always adjust the insulin if needed. I hope the weather passes you by. Be safe.

229 +6

I'm planning to start Lev tomorrow morning. Is there any reason I should wait until the clinic is open on Monday?
Nervous Nellie, likes to know vet is available ...just in case of .....something nailbite_smile

Re: 3/3 Checkers pmps 250 Q about Lev tomorrow

Hi Barb: I've used Duralactin for Gus for some time for his arthritis. Because he's on a regimen, it's hard to know exactly HOW much it helps him but when I take him to the vet that does the nutrition response testing, she says his body indicates he needs it (and I don't buy it from her so it's not just $$$ in her pocket  ). I get it online wherever it's the cheapest at the time I want to order. However, I don't know about the carbs/sugar, etc.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't start the lev tomorrow but if you are more comfortable waiting until you have a vet available, that is absolutely fine. One day won't matter. You have to feel safe about it. I was worried about Gracie....queen of sensitivity to change and meds. She did just great. But you need to feel good about it.

Hope things are holding up there. Sure am worried about all of you in the storms way.

Re: 3/3 Checkers pmps 250 Q about Lev tomorrow

I haven't been keeping up lately, but I'm glad to see you are switching to Lev. Hopefully it will help give Checkers a little extra duration to flatten him out.

I can't think of any reason why you should wait until Monday. I would go ahead and start, but I would start in a cycle when you can test frequently just in case Checkers has a good response on the first dose.

Re: 3/3 Checkers pmps 250 Q about Lev tomorrow

BARB--WE ARE ALL WITH YOU HERE!! You dont have to be afraid..many Lev users here too..you have the ability to contact us--No problem!--I am hoping that you will be safe & the storm passes you by!
Do what makes you comfortable & safe..Hoping this will bring Checks down..
Moonie has been managed by Dasuquin for a long while now, contains chondrotin & other natural ingredients..With her neuropathy, it's hard to tell, but I just know her..She does have arthritis since her dx.
She seems fine most days. -You do all you can for Checks, he;s a lucky boy!!
Hugs & Love from us!

Re: 3/3 Checkers pmps 250 Q about Lev tomorrow

Thanks Marje and Libby. I'll start tomorrow, because I'll be home all day to monitor

I'm assuming I should start at the same dose he's getting now, which is .5u? (1/2)

Thanks for the good thoughts, Marje. The wind has died down, and all is calm again here. Lots of damage in other towns.
I'm terrified of wind more than anything else I can think of.

Oh great, now you're gonna start giving me good numbers, Checkers? I have 2 new pens of Lantus left.
I wonder if I should wait and see what tomorrow brings before starting Lev?
If he is going to start giving me better numbers with Lantus, why start Lev just yet?

Oh dear....any thoughts???

Re: 3/3 Checkers pmps 250+1/191 Q about Lev tomorrow

Barb --

My only input is to say to pick a day and start the Lev. You're second guessing yourself!!

Had you given any thought to gabapentin for pain management?

Re: 3/3 Checkers pmps 250+1/191+2/122

Sienne, I had a script for gabapentin last Sept, when he was diagnosed, but there was a problem getting the dose that was prescribed. I don't remember details.
He had tramadol once, but it made him loopy, and the small pill had already been cut in half.

 Sorry to laugh, but you remind me of me! I'm always second guessing and I drive myself crazy.

My thought is that you have given Lantus a really good chance - a couple of years, at least, right? Why not try something new to see if you can get some consistency?

Re: 3/3 Checkers pmps 250+1/191+2/122

Very ncie cycle tonight Checkers - looking good!

Good luck with the Lev Barb. If it were me I'd just pick a day and start, but a day when you can watch and see. No clue on the starting dose... I think others have stated on a smaller dose? Marje and Ann of Ann and Tess are the ones that I know of that made the switch. Good luck!

Re: 3/3 Checkers pmps 250+1/191+2/122

Barb:

Gracie was on .75u lantus when I switched her. I started her at .5u lev and moved her up quickly. I held .5u two cycles, .75u four cycles, and then up to 1u. I wish I had started higher and Gracie has pretty much been around 1.25u (up and down a little) since. She did not kick in right away like Tess did but Tess was just coming off of ABs from an infection and her BG dropped.

I think you can start him at .5u or just a little less if you want. Just monitor closely the first few cycles and see what he does. I'll try to catch Libby and also get her input....I know you would feel better if a couple of us chimed in on dose. Don't blame you at all :-D

I'm excited for you!!!

Dum ol' cat!

You do this to me, on a night my eyeballs are burning from wanting sleep @-)

The reason I was second guessing myself is 'cause I spied the $40 worth of 2 new Lantus pens in the fridge

Such a cat he is! Good luck with the switch to Lev!

We use Adequan for our civvie Mario's arthritis. It has been a miracle for him; while he still has some symptoms, he's back to running, playing, grooming, his posture has improved, he doesn't bunny hop down the stairs anymore, and overall he looks and seems more comfy. He'll be 17 on St Pat's.

Have a great evening - I hope Checks lets you sleep a bit!
