Just bought him the Petsafe autofeeder that everyone recommended, and for now just put in the midnight meal to check to see if he will break into it. He’s caterwauling and trying to pry it open desperately. So far no luck. It’s sad to watch though :(

Last night I gave him 1/2 is his dinner at pm shot time and 1/2 3 hours later again. Seems the am sugars are lower again. This morning he got breakfast at amps and +0.5 right before I ran out the door. Idk if the half hour really made any difference but we’re still in the black this evening.

I REALLY hope that the auto feeder helps with his sugars, as well as his aggression and obsession with food. I’m gonna follow your advice and refrigerate and freeze some of the cans so they stay fresh longer, and maybe the smell won’t be as tempting for him. Poor guy...

Also, not sure how to interpret his 0.7 ketones. I gotta look the values up, but for anyone with experience with blood ketone testing please pitch in. This was 12 hours after his last meal. My understanding is that it’s borderline high.

Thanks.
Ana

The latest published research/studies in cats indicate ketones will begin to show up at readings of 2.4 and 2.55 on a blood ketone meter:
Measurement of ketones - Weingart_J VET Diagn Invest-2012(1).pdf
Measuring ketones - JSAP_Zeugswetter - 2012.pdf

So these articles say that over 2.4 in cats = DKA. Which is good to know, but how do I interpret 0.7? I’m glad he’s not in DKA but I would expect to be able to see behavioral signs if he was that sick. Are we looking to achieve 0? Is 0.7 ok? Should I be concerned and make any changes?

At this point I wouldn't be concerned. It's not unusual for a cat to throw ketones from time to time. A reading that continues to climb over repeated testing is more concerning than a single test result when that result is low to begin with. I would continue testing once a day if possible and make sure kitty is eating and remains hydrated.
