Hi everyone! Its been a while.... I planned on posting a Jupe update soon buts hes constipated....still plan to post an update later -and other then this constipation... hes been doing great!

Jupiter went back to the litterbox and he was straining but nothing in the LB. I called the vet and Jupe's regular vet is not available but they gave me a number for another vets office that is oncall.

We have an enema here from Jupe's vet the last time Jupe was constipated. I didnt want to give him the enema without making sure it was ok first. I talked to the oncall vet and he said he highly recommends i give the enema now. He said it should make him go immediately but keep an eye on jupe to make sure he is able to go again later.

Has anyone here ever given their kitty an enema at home?

I am not too sure what to expect..... such as... how much poo is enough? Like how much should he go that I know hes not constipated anymore....

Re: 3/29 Jupiter OT constipated

Jamie,
Have you ever tried Miralax with your kitty. When Freddie would get constipated I would always try Miralax and with a day he would be going good. In fact when he was on that W/D food I had to give every day ..when they are constipated for 3 or 4 days you can start with 1/4 to a half of teaspoon 2 times a day. I would always put in water with a little chicken crumbles and he would lap it right up.
How long has it been since Jupiter has had a bowl movement? I would run this by your vet and if he doesn't know maybe someone else will chime in here on this but I have used it with great results.

Re: 3/29 Jupiter OT constipated

We give him miralax every other day.... he got really gassy and thats why we only give every other day...and he had been doing good with that for quite some time now... guess its about time we give every day again

I just noticed the petenema is expired. Trying to get in touch with the oncall vet again.

Re: 3/29 Jupiter OT constipated

Hi, Jamie. I'm sorry that Jupe is constipated. But it's good to hear that he's doing well otherwise :-D

Ripley had several bouts of constipation, so I have a little experience with home enemas.
It takes 2 people ~ 1 to hold in burrito/baby style, the other to very carefully insert the Petema syringe.
We brought a litter box into the bathroom, put pee pads all over the floor (she generally was able to make it to the LB in time, but the enema sometimes takes effect rather immediately.)
We sometimes observed vomiting (normal), and when she would lick herself, she would foam at the mouth a little from the enema solution (also normal). No fun.
It's normal to see results from immediately after treatment to about 45 mins afterward. If Jupe is very impacted and he doesn't get cleared from the home enema, it's possible he may have to have his vet perform the emema.

Here is a great website that has some great info on feline constipation.

Re: 3/29 Jupiter OT constipated

i just spoke to the oncall vet

the petenema says it expires 01/2014

the oncall vet said he would still just use it. he doesnt sell them there and says jupe needs it soon. he said otherwise i could try soap and water....

i am a little weary about both options?

Re: 3/29 Jupiter OT constipated

Hi Jamie:

I've never had to give an enema (thank goodness), but I wondered if you've tried giving a little oil? Rachel recommended a teaspoon of canola oil in food. It does take a half day or so to work, but I've had good luck with it. Don't know if you want to wait that long, but just thought I'd share.

Sending good poo vines! Go, Jupiter!

Re: 3/29 Jupiter OT constipated

Hi Jamie. How long has it been since Jupiter pooed?

I give J.D. 1/8 tsp. of Miralax every morning. I've never given an enema, but I have given him lactulose before and it did not spike his numbers and it worked really fast (within an hour). Lactulose is cheap, but you'd need to ask your vet for it and if it's okay to use.

Re: 3/29 Jupiter OT constipated

Hi Jamie,
I have never given a kitty enema, but wanted to add poo vines also. Good luck with whatever you decide to try. Fingers/paws crossed for some relief for Jupiter

Re: 3/29 Jupiter OT constipated

I've also never had to deal with constipation but I highly recommend the site already linked as it was written by a friend. Sending big poo vines!

Re: 3/29 Jupiter OT constipated

If he is already blocked, it is too late for Miralax, lactulose, etc to work on the current blockage. Using them now could actually cause harm - tearing - from excessive pressure pushing on the blockage.

Once the current blockage is resolved, then increasing or adding those other options can be helpful in preventing it from happening again.

Re: 3/29 Jupiter OT constipated

Olive oil. I have used olive oil on their food, both dogs and cats, if they are eating of course. Works good, tho not necessarily immediately. I had a dog that couldn't go unless I put olive oil on his food every day. He loved it, and it help him go.

I've never done an enema, so can't help you there.

Re: 3/29 Jupiter OT constipated

Thank you all for the replies.

The pet-enema we had was expired. I could only talk to the on call vet at another practice, and they said it might be okay to use, or I could use soapy water. I went to the store and found a liquid suppository that had the same ingredients as the pet enema. The only difference is, the liquid suppository is a much smaller quantity of liquid. Pet enema is 12ml and this was only 5ml.

I gave Jupiter the enema (the 5ml suppository) yesterday and he had a bowel movement a few minutes later. A few times since he passed some stool that was pretty much completely liquid. Yuck! He vomited quite a bit yesterday after the enema but has not vomited at all today.

I am still concerned about a possible blockage. His stool is normally very thick(as in size around) especially compared to the other cats. We call it "jupe poop" and we usually know if hes went or not since his stool is larger we can tell its his when we scoop the litter box. Now yesterday his first bowel movement after the enema, his stool was very thin (as in how wide it is). It was a long piece of stool but very thin (a little thinner then the other cats stool normally is). He had some completely liquid poo and also passed more stool like the bowel movement he had after enema with long skinny poo. So now my concern is, could his stool be so skinny like that due to him having a blockage but the stool moving around the blockage?

And I am sorry that I have to go into the gross detail of explaining his bowel movements but I am really worried about him.

He has also been hiding under the couch all day today. Something he hasnt done in about 2 months. Hes been feeling better and his anxiety has improved so much so he rarely goes under there. I guess because hes not feeling well, hes hiding. Breaks my heart to see him like this again.

Re: 3/29 & 3/30 Jupiter OT constipated - worried about block

I'm sorry Jupiter is going through this, and I hope it resolves itself or you find a solution.

Re: 3/29 & 3/30 Jupiter OT constipated - worried about block

Don't worry about the poo description. I have posted so many poo condos. It's all part of Jupiter's well being and health.

Re: 3/29 & 3/30 Jupiter OT constipated - worried about block

Hey Jamie,

Cobb had a blockage a few years ago. He was not only straining while trying to poop, but he also yelped and cried because of the pain. A blockage is life threatening. He had to have emergency surgery within an hour of calling our vet with the symptoms. If you think he's blocked, it's definitely worth a trip to make sure!

Re: 3/29 & 3/30 Jupiter OT constipated - worried about block

i don't have personal kitty experience, but what you described does sound like a partial blockage. i've heard others describe that. i'd take him in.

sending our best!

Re: 3/29 & 3/30 Jupiter OT constipated - worried about block

i just wanted to add that i'd take him in to the vet right away. it sounds urgent to me, although i'm not there to see Jupe.

Re: 3/29 & 3/30 Jupiter OT constipated - worried about block

Yes, stool can move around a partial blockage.
Or, only the outward most portion was liquified and able to move and he still has a chunk stuck up inside.

Vet. Now.

Re: 3/29 & 3/30 Jupiter OT constipated - worried about block

He has still been passing some stool today just thin pieces. He just came out from under the couch and ate some.

I will be calling the vet first thing in the morning.

Re: 3/29 & 3/30 Jupiter OT constipated - worried about block

Hi Jamie,
We are sending lots of vines and good thoughts for Jupe's vetty appointment today. I hope all will be OK.

Hugs and scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 3/29 & 3/30 Jupiter OT constipated - worried about block

Jamie

Ann (GA Maggie) sent me a PM and suggested you be sure and get X-rays. Maggie had megacolon and so Ann has lots of experience with poo issues. So please ask for those xrays.

Sending healing vines.

Re: 3/29 & 3/30 Jupiter OT constipated - worried about block

Hi Jamie!

I figure you're at the vet's office now, and I hope you're getting some answers. Jupe is such a special boy and I know you just want him to feel better.

Sending lots of good poo vines your way, and will check up on you later.

Re: 3/29 & 3/30 Jupiter OT constipated -vet today ? about fl

We are home... they gave Jupe fluids while he was there.... the fluids are leaking out.... is this normal?

I will be posting an update soon

Re: 3/29 & 3/30 Jupiter OT constipated -worried about blocka

If he's very dehydrated, the puncture site may not close up easily and can leak.
