It looks like Rocky is still working on clearing a bounce. At the end of this March it will be 4 months that he is on Lantus and he is still not regulated.

Tina, unfortunately it's going to take time to get him regulated. Some cats aren't regulated in a short period of time, whereas others can be. Look at me... I've been at this for 4 years and Blackie's regulated, but I've been doing a LOT of experiments with her over that time period. Rocky's starting to show improvement with less pinks and is showing more blues and yellows, and this IS progress. I know you're frustrated, however, you have to have patience. Have you tested him for ketones? If you haven't, I suggest you try and get a test from him the next time he goes to the litterbox. Simply place the strip behind his stream as he goes, and then wait the necessary time (I think it's 15 seconds), and match the strip to the bottle.

If you've done ketone testing already, my apologies. Please hang in there, ok? He IS starting to show improvement, I know it's not as quickly as you'd like to see, but he IS getting there. You can't rush feline diabetes. :YMHUG: You're doing a great job... You both are. :-D

Thank you for the words of encouragement, Angela. I do get frustrated when he starts a bounce, but you are right, is showing some signs of improvement. Those hours spent in blue the day before yesterday were pretty sweet.

Tina, you're doing great! This is such a rollercoaster, isn't it? My husband said back in January he could tell what kind of day Cobb was having numbers-wise because it affected my mood so much. He'd dip into the blues or tiptoe in the greens and is be elated thinking, "yes this is the dose!" Then he would bounce and never come back down! And then I'd be irritable and depressed. I'm sure we've all been there. Keep up the good work though. You're doing great!

Yep, this is a rollercoaster; a marathon, not a sprint; a true test of patience. Some cats regulate very easily; some never really fully regulate. Some regulate, then fall out of regulation, then re-regulate. BUT, even if they don't fully regulate, treatment helps them significantly - they feel MUCH better than they did before insulin was started. ECID.... and the most important thing to do is look at the big picture and how they are feeling. FD is a crazy dance....I hope Rocky is feeling great tonight!

he's having longer periods of time in better numbers. you've got new tactics to try - and he is making improvement.

i think it helps one's spirits to stay focused on the positive changes. that's how people manage to do this for years.

Thanks everyone.. I was just so hoping that this was the right insulin dose for Rocky. I do need to stay positive. Rocky is feeling pretty good so that is a major plus, and he does like to eat. :-D

Perhaps the question is not whether he is regulated because he seems to me he is close if not already there. Perhaps the concern is more that he is not tightly regulated.
Q6.1. What is regulation?

Not treated [blood glucose typically above 300 mg/dl (16.7 mmol/L), poor clinical signs]
Treated but not regulated [often above 300 (16.7) and rarely near 100 (5.6), poor clinical signs]
Regulated [generally below 300 (16.7) with glucose nadir near 100 (5.6), good clinical signs, no hypoglycemia]
Well regulated [generally below 200-250 (11.1-13.9) and often near 100 (5.6), no hypoglycemia]
Tightly regulated [generally below 150 (8.3) and usually in the 60-120 (3.3-6.7) range, no hypoglycemia, still receiving insulin]
Normalized [60-120 (3.3-6.7) except perhaps directly after meals -- usually not receiving insulin]

Well that puts an entirely different light on things now after reading that, Marje!

I was wondering, I have not read through a lot about Davidson's page but I looked at his SS and I see a sea of green. Why is he still on insulin? How long does a cat need to stay in thos green numbers before a CG does an OTJ trial?

He's still on insulin because he hasn't made his way down to 0.1u and still in green. Shawna will just continue to reduce him as he earns reductions either by going below 50 once or spending one week in numbers primarily below 100. He's probably not far from going into a trial.

That's exciting. I looked at his SS again last night and I saw that he was still on .5u and figured it out, that he has not shown complete juice independence yet.
