Sid has been having some good levels lately (for him, that is), but I've noticed he has still been at the water dish a lot and still urinating a lot. I'm thinking he has developed a UTI or kidney infection. I hope not but at least then meds could get him better. I

plan to catch a sample for the vet tomorrow. Tonight when I tested his urine on the ketone strip, it looked a tiny bit pink but I wonder if that could be from blood in the urine? On the ketone meter he was at 0.4. My second question is would fluids help if he does have a UTI? I think they would and I'm going to give him 40ml in a bit.

Over the weekend, his appetite seems to have decreased a little and I was worried. Last night it perked up again and today it has been pretty good. It might have something to do with the fact that the kitten food that I thought was Special Kitty Select was actually Special Kitty starter so for kittens.... He liked it so that's what matters.

Water is definitely good for a uti or kidney infection. The more you can get him to drink, the better. I hope he feels better soon and it turns out to be nothing serious.

Hi Lydia,
Sorry I don't know Sid's history and ability to get to the vet. Is it possible to do so and have his urine tested via Cystocentesis ( needle via free catch)?

Sienne's link offers some good information on urinary tract issues. I would not hesitate to bring him in and get checked out if you are noticing possible blood in the urine.

Keep us posted!

Carolyn is right....a free catch is not going to be accurate...you need a sterile sample via cysto to tell. Also, that will tell you if there is a UTI but won't tell you if there is a kidney infection. They can still have pyelonephritis with no bacteria in the urine...an ultrasound is needed for that.

I know the advantages of doing cystocentesis but there are also disadvantages such as the fact that the procedure can make them bleed and therefore blood appear in the urine. The other important part of the urine sample is to see how he is concentrating his urine. We are just going to start with the free catch - sid sprays so it was straight into a clean container straight out of the dishwasher.

Yes it was an ultrasound that diagnosed his kidney infection in January and we may do it again depending.

Sid, didn't I tell you you weren't allowed to get sick ever again, you have used up all your sicknesses young man so I hope you are just playing with your mumbean this time, will it help if I say pretty please...

I hope you are able to get into the vet and get checked. Tarragon had a history of getting UTIs over and over. Mixing water in the food really helped. I almost put in 1/2 can water to 1 can of food. Hugs to you and Sid!

I think I posted before that we were able to check Maverick's urine concentration on my own. I used my husbands salt water refractometer. It was the same one the vet used LOL. It saved us money - I can't believe what the vets charge to check this. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Salinity-Re...ultDomain_0&hash=item3f155d7782#ht_4029wt_907 I oft course did not share this fact with my husband. He would not have been impressed. But Maverick didn't handle trips to the vet well. I think fluids will reduce the concentration.

Thank you Karrie for the links. Im going to check them from home. Im at work now. The vet ran an in house urinanalysis and did not find anything; however Sid is not concentrating his urine (0.015) and has a significantly diminished immune response so he may not produce any whit blood cells. He is showing all the same signs of infection as he did before so we are starting zenniquin tonight as a precaution. They are still sending the culture out also.

Hi guys .. I sure hope sid doesnt have anything going on .. but if he does, I hope it's something easy that can be treated right away with meds .. you guys certainly deserve an easy fix!!

You mean 1.015 - but he's on fluids though right?

I think its smart that you are starting the abx. How long was he on them after his kidney infection diagnosis. I think most of the dogs that get kidney infections are on them for six weeks minimum.

Yes, sorry, his values are 1.015. Last check about 3 weeks ago or so his BUN was 39 and CRE was something like 1.5. So he did not need fluids daily based on these values, but when his bg is high or ketone activity starts to appear, I give up to 100 ml fluids/day. Part of the reason I only give fluids if I *have to* is that Sid gets so scared of the fluids that his he hides from me and his little heart just beats like crazy. But he usually settles down and then I give him a treat and all is well. I hate putting him through that unless I have to and then I will.

If fluids will help flush out an infection in his urinary tract, then I will give him 40 ml tonight. His bg has been a little high - only because he dropped to 38 yesterday. His ketone meter reading was lo.

He has been drinking so much water with relatively low bg levels that it is quite worrisome - he walks from one water dish to the next constantly and then he will finally lay down. He has also been vomiting every day and I am worried about that too.

He started on baytril tonight until the zeniquin comes in (my vet doesn't carry it and we had to order it).
