Hello everyone,

Sid's numbers have improved but he lately he has constantly been at the water dish and urinating a lot as if his bg is high. I tested him on 2 meters just to make sure. Yep, 200s. So, I'm concerned about what is going on and worried he has a UTI or kidney infection brewing. So I am taking a sample into the vet tomorrow for culture. I think I will also give him some fluids tonight because maybe that will help a UTI????

Oh poor Sid. Please let us know as soon as you can. His numbers look great, but that's Sid for ya.... keeping mama on her toes! Did he give you any greens today? Just curious of what his nadir is like staying at 1.6 Will check back in the morning.

Hey Lydia -

I've not heard of fluids to address a UTI. Maybe, but I think AB is what's gonna knock it out. Good luck tomorrow.

Sheesh, Sid...was that really necessary? Nice job managing the numbers, Lydia....he really loves to keep you on your toes! I hope he clears the bounce quickly. His numbers overall have been really nice, Lydia!

I know Sienne linked Dr. Lisa's site for you in LL, there's a lot of great info there about urinary issues. I would suggest taking Sid in for a cystocentesis rather than taking a free catch sample in if you are testing for infection. A free catch sample could be contaminated by external bacteria, so if it is positive, you won't know if there truly is a UTI or if the sample was contaminated.

Yes, I understand the reasons why a cystocentesis is preferable but I've had many vets explain the drawbacks of it to me too - namely that it can cause bleeding in the bladder - a small amount but still. I discussed this with the vet last night and she thought my method of running the container through the dishwasher to sterilize it would be good and then I catch the urine while Sid sprays. So at no time does the urine touch anything that would be contaminated. The vet also pointed out that Sid has such a compromised immune system from the lymphoma that he may not even be able to produce any white blood cells therefore he may have an infection that won't show up in any tests. Also his urine has a very low specific gravity (1.015) so it is ripe for infection.

We started him on baytril tonight until the zeniquin I ordered comes in. We still sent the sample out for testing. he is showing all the classic signs of an infection, similar to when he first went DKA - dropping to hypo levels and then spiking up, drinking lots and lots of water despite his bg being low, urinating a lot (almost every hour), slightly diminished appetite, and vomiting. These symptoms really manifested over the weekend and I was so worried about ketones that I checked his urine several times every day!! and on the ketone meter too.

Wow - what a well-educated mama you are; I was so impressed reading your post about lots of things I had never heard of!! ;-)

Hi Lydia, Keeping you guys in my thoughts & prayers. I am in the process of moving, but I will try to keep up with everything. I have been checking-in, but you hadn't updated his SS, so I was just waiting for you to surface :-D Hopefully, Sid will have some good numbers in the am. Fingers crossed no UTI!

Poor Sid! UTIs are no fun... Good catch on his run and on all the other symptoms that are creeping up. Keep us tuned in... feel better little guy!!!

Oh, so sorry to read this. You are so good at handling Sid's conditions, hopefully this will be under control soon.

Keeping you and Sid in my thoughts and prayers.

Kim
