3/25 Minnie PMPS 212, +1 228 Ketones HI, +2.25 194, +2.75 174. @AMPS+8, 1u R, Ketones 5.8

I will also copy this as a new post for today, thank you all!

Maybe coming home tonight. They said she's showing some "spunk" but no interest in food this morning - I had to ask (tell) them to give ondansetron and offer food other than the low fat prescription stuff. Going to start the bezofibrate for hyperlipidemia and not wait 2 weeks to see if low fat diet helps. Potassium still a bit low 3.2 (normal range 3.4-5.3) and will check ketones this afternoon. Discharge criteria is based on potassium and ketone levels. She's still on IV fluids and injection insulin, next R dose in about 30min from now (noon my time). They'll have an update at 4-5pm 'whether we can discharge her'.

Her BG readings overnight (theirs)
PMPS +4 348, +6 433, +10 400. AMPS 316
potassium last night 2.1, this morning 3.2

She's being looked after by an ER specialist who fortunately she spoke to the internist [because "this seems to be a high level case, you seem to want a high level of care" - this did not endear me to her, no need for that!] - but GOOD because internist emphasized the need to continue insulin (unluckily internist only works Mon-Weds at least available to them for consult). Also good because (I can't believe this) they missed the need for ondansetron.

She asked if I wanted to think about Minnie getting a (permanent) feeding tube to avoid future hospital stays so I can get food down her next time this situation arises. I listened and asked a bunch of questions and said no, not needed right now. Her appetite is FINE except when she gets ill from the increased ketones.

Oh. Thank goodness you posted. I was getting so worried about Minnie. I feel better now. I was just saying to my daughter how worried I am. Maybe I can help her type her paper now... she's been wanting me to... going around folding clothes, polishing silver, ironing... all because she wants me to type this instead of her. So happy about little Minnie. I will post now on today's...

Sorry to get you worried! but - wait, shouldn't your daughter be typing her own paper? And you help with editing after?!! :) - This last week has been a blur. That Minnie, every time now....I can see the hospital stay coming and each time I am better equipped at avoiding it but still not equipped enough!! I am cautiously hopeful that addressing her high cholesterol plus continuing to work on her insulin dosing will help. I do worry a bit that if I'd got the ondansetron, cerenia and subq i and maybe added a unit of R earlier yesterday that this might have been avoided, but nothing I can do about history.

Permanent feeding tube. Argh. I couldn't believe my ears. I said, she normally eats like a pig! It's only when she's getting sick....I know I don't want her going back into hospital with this, but I definitely don't want her with a permanent feeding tube "just in case", that I have to flush multiple times a day etc. She thought she should offer it as an option because of how much data is on the spreadsheet, she didn't want me to come back to her later and ask why she hadn't mentioned it!! This kind of things (and forgetting ondansetron) make me lose trust in the ER doctors...and with not seeing them due to covid, I picture these doctors who finished vet school 2 months ago LOL I've turned into a cranky old lady.

Seems that my Minnie wants to be a special case. ECID but some cats are more different than others! I think this should be my new signature: :cat: :banghead:

Thanks for all the concern and support, everyone. :bighug::bighug:

Oh. Hindsight is 20/20. I know. I still beat myself up sometimes about cats who have died years ago... thinking how I could have done this or that... things I did NOT know about at all (especially going back to when I was in college with my first cat of "my own" (i.e., not our family cat).

Yes... I'll probably make her type it. She's already written up the whole paper herself... she's just not a fast typist... I keep telling her to practice more. I will make suggestions if I see anything.

I think you will be able to jump on this next time if it happens and keep her out of the hospital. I remember thinking when Darcy was DKA.... how can he be DKA.... isn't that only cats in the 400s and 500s (he was solidly in the 200s at the time). he did have an infection though (high white count, very high temperature).

Well... I'll be looking for info later on whether or not Minnie gets to go home!
