3/25 Jack 277, 125, 141- back to 7 units

So Jack's vet visit went very well. He was pretty calm for the trip there, minus some creative vocalizations on his part, but no mess in the carrier, and no 'happy meds' - so no complaints. Here's the weird parts:
  1. He was 22 pounds...up 5 pounds from last year. The vet was happy...I was not. She claims she would rather see a diabetic a little overweight than under/losing weight. I'm thinking fat boy's weight is probably a contributing cause to his diabetic condition. We agreed to disagree.
  2. She was thrilled with his spreadsheet and numbers under 300 for the most part. Apparently that's the 'clinical goal' for treating diabetes. Really? Here I am killing myself looking for 90-130 (instead of 80 - 120) as a compromise to Jack's diet choices. We agreed to disagree again.
  3. She spared me the conversation over 'prescription diet' because I had already gone through that argument when Mopem was diagnosed, and he was in remission in 10 months on the same diet Jack is on, and because she recognized Dr. Lisa Pierson's name when I showed her the pdf on food content a few years ago. Now, granted Jack didn't bother to read and adhere to the pdf, but at least I didn't have to re-do the same conversation again.
  4. She suggested giving Jack 7 units when we got home (based on his number at PMPS of course) to get him back to where I want him, and then tweak accordingly. This I did because I'd like to see his ketones come back down some (0.2 is pretty normal for him with blue/green numbers and we've been seeing 0.3 for the last few tests) I'm keeping an eye on him today and his numbers do seem better...but....he decided to cooperate and have mainly pate for breakfast. So, we will stick with 7units and see if we can make this the diet/momma's goal compromise dose at last.
All in all a pretty good trip to the vet. He got his shots, a clean bill of health minus the cosmetic dandruff and diabetes, behaved like a gentleman, was thoroughly amused with her recommendations which align more closely to her goals than mine (I swear he was smirking at me), and got his insulin and syringe prescriptions renewed for another year. We'll take it and be happy for once. @Deb and Sylvester @Diane Tyler's Mom @Carole & Indigo as updates. Thanks for your input yesteray!

You're welcome Christine!

I hope Jack does better on the 7U...

I can understand the weight thing, but I'm surprised your Vet was happy about him gaining 5 lbs, because that's pretty significant!

If you want him to lose weight, use Dr. Pierson's guide. Slow is the only way, especially since our cats are on insulin. I have to invest in a baby scale, so I can account for how much Sly is on track to lose, he needs to shed about 2.5 lbs to be where he should be. My hope is lower weight, less insulin.

Have a great week!

Good luck to Sly on the diet! I'll have to go back and re-read the weight loss section....I have been concentrating on the 'eat the proper food' part for over a year now and he still won't cooperate

You'll get him there. Sometimes we have to work on their terms.

My last sugar cat had lots of issues, and after 2 years of TR, I had to give him dry food, and prednisilone, so we needed to change up his dose often, where I was trying to counteract his rises with timing.

I hope Jack comes down for you today :bighug:

Thanks, it's so tough because we can't explain to them why we are changing their diets. I'm sorry you had such trouble with your last kitty. Hugs...and thanks for the support and advice!
