Yesterday Was a Long Day at Tricia's House of Chaos

Cinco seems to have had a good night. Two large pees on the pee pads. He was laying on his bed on the floor this morning when I came downstairs, and he'd eaten about 80% of his first breakfast. He only ate a couple bites of the second breakfast, then a few more with copious amounts of Forti Flora. I gave him a half tablet of Cypro, so we'll see shortly when I offer him lunch if he will eat. I may break out the baby food, since that was a success last night.

I had an e-mail from Dr. Moore this morning, telling me she was thinking of Cinco and asking for an update. She said she'd been on the phone to our regular vet's office and everyone there was asking about him. I wrote back that he'd eaten some and told her about the Cypro. She responded that she was very happy to hear he'd eaten (she said she and the other vet that were going over his records did a happy dance!) and agreed with my plan to try Cypro and then baby food before resorting to the Mirtz Dr. Codde prefers. I send her a link to Cinco's spreadsheet, so she can check on him when she wants to and she called it "the most fabulous recordkeeping system". I told her I couldn't take credit - it's all FDMB. She reiterated that she is on call all weekend and available any time I have questions or concerns.

Cinco is up on the sofa, snoozing. I can hear him breathing, but he's not snoring like he was yesterday. I am going to take that as step in the right direction.

Harvey ate all his first breakfast and has been grazing on the second one for a while. He seems okay today, but still not his "old" self. I guess I need to accept that he probably won't ever be his "old" self again. :( I'm very happy to be seeing more blue on his SS. Hopefully this dose will be "the one".

Many more thanks to all who have been visiting our condos and offering prayers, vines and support. You are so appreciated and are helping me get through this very long nightmare. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

We're keeping Doodles & Karen, Elizabeth & Gus, Crystal & Suki and China & Chris in our thoughts and prayers, as well as Michelle's DH.

Sending healing vines to all others in need and hugs to all their beans. :bighug:

Have I mentioned before how much I love your vet team? It's so great you got a phone call from the oncologist and they are there for you this weekend.

I'm holding my breathe for Cinco. It sounds like some positive steps. Baby steps, but in the right direction. :bighug: Vines still coming. Work it Elspar!!!

Maybe Harvey's just feeling a little off cause he's not as comfortable in those yellows anymore. I hope once he gets back to the lagoon he'll be more like his old self.

((Tricia)) I'm sending endless hugs and vines. You truly have an amazing village of vets at UCD. I'm glad Cinco is breathing better, and hopefully his appy will pick up soon. And good luck with Harvey's dose. Keeping you all in my thoughts :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I agree - your team is awesome and that makes all the difference in the world! I like Cinco's report today...fingers, paws, and everything else that is lucky is crossed here. Continued prayers for you, DH, both boys....

Very encouraging Cinco report. When Tiffany had had enough cyproheptadine no longer worked. Her last meal after that that was syringes was after getting Valium to stimulate her appetite. It worked but I was told it can cause liver failure so I never gave it again and syringe fed.

Max just needs 1/8-1/4 cyproheptadine. You might want to experiment with a little less to see if Cinco isn't as sleepy.

what meds does Harvey get now? Hopi g his appy picks up.

Hi Tricia, I was glad to read this report and learn that Cinco is doing better today. Keep it going, Deputy Cinco! I agree with the others: you have a great vet team.
More vines are on the way.
Nice slide, Deputy Harvey. You'll be back in the lagoon in no time.

Hugs, scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Thanks for visiting us, Wendy, Lydia, Josie, Amy, Elise and Ella. Harvey decided he didn't feel like a swim today. Maybe tonight. I'm just happy he's still blue.

Cinco has polished off an entire jar of baby food in the past hour, :) but still no go on the cat food. I think he can smell the baby food better. I don't care, as long as he's eating. If he keeps preferring baby food I may have to start adding Taurine, but I can work with that. I have to go to the store, though, as my last jar was Beechnut, and they don't like that as well as Gerbers - Cinco only ate a couple bites of that one (after the jar of Gerbers).

@tiffmaxee, I gave Cinco 1/4 tablet of Cypro the other day and it had zero effect. That's why I went with 1/2 today. He is a pretty good sized cat - around 11 lbs., so maybe he just needs more. Dr. Codde wants me to give him Mirtz, but I don't like that as well, due to the side effects. I will go to it, though, if he isn't eating enough. I don't think the Cypro is making him sleepy. He sleeps a lot normally, but you know it's hard to tell when he's awake since he has no eyes!

I didn't know about Valium and liver failure. I used to give it to Harvey when he was going through his major Psycho Kitty stage and wouldn't stop assaulting Minka. His liver values are fine (anti-jinx).

I agree, I am blessed with some wonderful vets. Dr. Codde, who bought the practice several years ago from our beloved Dr. Parker when she became too ill to continue doing surgery, has turned out to be just as compassionate and cooperative. When I asked her if she would do me a favor the other day, she said "anything, anytime" (the favor was deciphering the girls' necropsies). They always squeeze me into their schedule if one of my babies needs to be seen. Most of the staff there have been there for years and years - we've been going there for 26. Dr. Moore and the other oncologists at UCD are fabulous, too. The only less that wonderful experience I've had there was with the IMs regarding FD. Just can't get through to them. Fortunately, Dr. Codde is more than happy to work with me on it, so I don't need the IMs for anything but Harvey's lymphoma.

I'd better get a move on and get the boxes scooped and head to the store for more baby food! BBL.

The liver problem doesn't effect all cats but when it does it's irreversible. I asked at the time if a small amount would be okay and was told it's like an allergy. Either it effects them or it doesn't. My vet had never seen it happen. So Harvey is safe if it's ever needed again I would think.

Max is 15 1/2 pounds so with cyproheptadine I don't think weight matters. Max is just super responsive to it. Zyrtec didn't get as strong a reaction but I think it helped too even though he got it for the URI.

Max only likes Gerbers too. It doesn't effect his BG like some think either.

Oh, that's good to know about the Valium, Elise, although I don't think I'll ever have to give it to Harvey again. :(

I think you're right about being responsive to stuff. Cypro worked on Minka really well, but I don't think it's as effective with Cinco. I should have tried the baby food first, and then I'd know if it was the drug or he just prefers the baby food! Next time.

The consistency of the Beechnut looks unappetizing to me, and I guess my kitties agree, as none of them have ever cared for it. I bought that jar when Minka was really sick and they were out of Gerbers. I haven't had to buy any baby food for two months, and I was down to the last couple of jars. I've never seen any affect on Cinco's BG from it, either. Right now he's more likely to have an uptick from the Pred.

Sending more healing vines for the boys from Michael and I in Riverside.
More :bighug::bighug::bighug: for you.

Sorry I missed yesterdays news Tricia...I watched all day but I guess you posted late and today I've been pre-occupied with a certain other PITA named China

I'm totally expecting the Elspar to work a miracle and Cinco will bounce back quickly....it sounds like he's already feeling at least a little better....eating is good!!...even if it's Gerbers (after all, he's just an extra furry baby)

Got to say though...seems like Cinco and China are pulling another one of their co-dependent stunts....she's not too interested in her regular food either, but break out the Gerbers and it's another story!

Hopefully you just need to keep tweaking Harvey's dose and he'll perk up too. I think we all wish we could have our old cats act like they "used to", but unfortunately, time marches on (for us beans too, darn it!)

Will continue to send all the vines we can muster in your direction and will just expect a full recovery!!

Just checking in on your boys. I'm hoping the meds will help Cinco feel like eating his cat fuds soon but I'm glad he's eating baby food at least.

Prayers for him and Harvey.

Thanks for stopping by, Carla, Anne, Paula, Chris and Marje. I've spent most of the day cleaning up pee from the carpet. I put a litter box right next to where Cinco hangs out, and put him in it. He stood there a minute, then peed and climbed out. But an hour or so later I found a new puddle on the carpet! Every time I add pee pads, Cinco walks until he's on carpet, and then he pees!
icon_rolleyes.gif
The family room is now about 80% carpeted with pee pads.

He only ate about 1/4 of his dinner. After about 45 minutes I gave him some baby food (Gerber's), and he ate about 1/3 of that. :( I don't know what else to do. Does anyone know of a cat food that is really smelly? Dr. Codde is convinced the problem is that he can't smell the food, and they won't eat if they can't smell it. I remember when I was little, our cat's favorite food was liver and kidneys, and it smelled HORRIBLE! I haven't seen anything like that around in years.

Harvey ate all his dinner (yay) and is grazing on seconds. He's working on pushing me off the desk chair now.

It's about time for me to start dinner, so I'd better get going. BBL.

I know it's not one of the better foods, especially for phosphorus due to the fish, but the one that hits me in the face every time I open it is Friskies Sea Captain's choice...PHEW!

Thanks, Chris. I don't think that one is too bad, but I'll try it tomorrow. I gave him some FF Tuna & Mackerel tonight and he started off like he was going to eat a lot, but then he kind of petered off. He's not acting nauseated, but I might try giving him some Ondansetron later, just in case.

I agree with everyone else here. I'm majorly jealous of Cinco's medical team! Makes me consider moving out by you just to take advantage. Continued vines coming your way!

The Soulistic moist and tender chicken smells awful. It contains tuna juice and tuna and isn't high carb. Vines and prayers for the boys. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

(((Tricia))) sending heaps of vines and prayers for both your boys :bighug: Have you tried just plain tuna juice over Cinco's food, it smells pretty strong. Hope you find something to tempt him.

Thanks, Suki. I haven't put the tuna juice over his food, but he had some tuna juice today because I had tuna for lunch. I was thinking, watching him and Harvey inhale the juice, that I should eat tuna every day!

Ugh! I hate these numbers. Harvey can (and probably will ) earn a dosecrease on Sunday morning, but Cinco needs another 4 cycles at this dose. I started his pred tonight, so that isn't going to help the numbers. :( On the positive side, he's now had two jars of baby food today, plus several tablespoons of cat food. :) He might eat more baby food if I offer it. And I just might. ;)
