3/25 Darcy. PMPS 247

Well, my elation over the blue AMPS yesterday was short-lived. Today he started out high and stayed high most of the morning. Even 14 units of R didn't pull him down much at all at the +4 mark. Go figure. He's been limping today and I think he is in pain and that is what's driving the BG numbers. I gave him the last Onsior that I had because it made him so much better last time, but I really don't plan to give more of that because of my concern about the kidneys. I have some Buprenorphine here at home, but hesitated to give him that as well. I'd have to figure a dose for a 17+ lb. cat. I'm going to order the 1-TDR that has been recommended, but I need something fast so he's not just lying around in pain with high BG numbers that won't budge down because of the pain.

So, we will see what happens this afternoon. If my theory is correct, his numbers should drop and probably will drop into the evening. My poor boy. He's so sweet. I hate for him to be in pain. This is killing me.

I just spoke with the vet... not my regular vet who is on vacation this week, but the other vet in the practice. He is not a fan of using the Onsior either. We discussed Gabapentin, which he said we could try, but it is very hard to dose. He said that they are not able to get the tablets but just very large capsules that are in a dose much too large for cats. He said, it could be compounded, but that would be expensive. We then talked about Buprenorphine. He recommended .17 - .2 for a cat of Darcy's weight (this would be twice or three times a day). He asked if we had started the Cosequin, which we just did this morning. Soooo... I will need to revisit this with my vet next week and talk about using Bupe more long term unless she has ideas about the Gabapentin (which I always thought was better for nerve pain rather than joint pain?)

Hi Wendy. How often did you give Neko the Bupe? It's like 2-3 times a day...
Answering in today's post, instead of bumping up an old post which we don't like to do. I gave Neko bupe twice a day - that seemed to work for her. A couple times after dentals we bumped it up to three times a day until she got over the surgery inflammation. Neko's dose, for a 14.5 ish lb cat was .22 - of course that depends on the concentration too. Gabapentin was my vets second choice, after bupe. We tried it for a while (got pills in the 50 mg size) but it mostly just made her sleepy. We then tried 100mg, then stopped it after a week or so. Pain meds and what works for which cat seems to be ECID. I've seen a number of acro's do well on gaba, Neko just wasn't one of them. Oh, and she was on bupe and gaba at the same time during the gaba trials. Don't forget Adequan too.

Sorry about today's bounce, not too surprising.

Thank you, Wendy! I'm sorry about the old post... I forgot. And yes, I think we need to start Adequan perhaps soon... maybe she wanted to wait a month for the cosequin? I will have a talk with her next week when I take Darcy and Ginger back in for re-checks on Tuesday.

My vet didn't have high hopes for Cosequin based on what she's seen with other clients, she was right. It didn't do much for Neko. Though I was using a Canadian equivalent that contained MSM, and had helped a previous kitty. I wouldn't wait too long if you think he's in pain - best to get ahead of pain.

I tried glucosamine chondroitin and MSM on myself years ago and never had much improvement. I had hip bursitis though (oddly enough it was finally a chiropractor who pretty much cured it). I get much better results from curcumin.

Poor Darcy. I hope you can get something that works for his pain. I hope he comes back down soon. Sending prayers. :bighug:

Thank you. He has come back down some now. I'm sorry Mouzer came out of remission in February :-(

I am glad Darcy is coming down and I am sorry about Mouzer too ahahahahaaa
I am exhausted from the every hour test and getting nothing done today but Mouzer and I see I am fixing to start right back up and there will be no sleep for me tonight. I need Mouzer to get back into remission lol I am too old for this :D

Hi. Is it hard to get him to eat? I noticed you are spreading his food out a teaspoon at a time over many hours. You got him into greens today! Yes!

The hourly teaspoon is to help steer his numbers and to keep him hungry, so he will eat at least a teaspoon every hour for the duration. He finally showed he was hungry at +10 and he ate his 3 tablespoons that he would have eaten for breakfast ahahaahaha And I do hope he will still eat a teaspoon every hour because I just gave a shot with 109, close to this mornings reading when I did the am shot, he wont eat and I expect I am up for the night and dying for sleep ahahaaa
It was getting hard to get Mouzer to eat those last couple of hours teaspoons, he was sick of me, sick of being stuck in the ear and sick of seeing the plate in his face ahahahaa And he is sick of me now and tonight, he might make me have to chase him down and I am so tired, I dont need to have to be chasing him :D

Were you able to start bupe today? I hope Mr. Darcy is getting some relief from his pain. Poor boy and poor you. It's hard to see them in pain. That said, what a nice PMPS! I hope you see more blue soon!
