3/25/11 - Coco - PMPS 147 / +3 is 116 (ACRO)

Alrighty, once again up until his levels rise. Coco is an Acro cat. and he is currently at.. 116.. I just wanted to know if i should feed him high carb b4 going into double digits or.. like now.. since he is close. I gave him his pm shot 3 hours ago . low point is around .. +6 - +8 depending. some times he just surfs though.. so I'm not really sure what to do.

edit* I only post here when all the other Acro ppls are sleeping.. but.. seems mostly everyone on here is sleeping as well ._. lol

oh.. and this pmps is from 10:30 pm on the 24th.. but was the 25th when i posted. so i just used todays date x.x

+4 is 119.. so still need to stay up to check it again

With an acro cat, blues are what you are aiming for. Blue is the new green. Remember, Coco has a working pancreas. It's the growth hormone involved in the acro diagnosis that drives the numbers. So, when you are seeing low blues, you want to feed HC. And, you may need to feed LOTS of HC. Since there's a working pancreas, feeding LC may only have the effect of causing the pancreas to do what it does normally -- produce insulin. If the pancreas is producing endogenous insulin on top of what you're shooting, numbers can drop and you would have to work very hard to get them back up.

Please keep your shelves well stocked with HC food and have Karo or other syrup on hand at all times.

Sorry we were sleeping when you had a question last night. IMHO, yesterday was absolutely perfect. Running flat in yellow/blue is probably very comfortable for Coco. Hopefully he will do it again! (and again, and again...)

You do need to be careful about green. If he is surfing along nicely and dips a toe or two into green, no big deal. If he is dropping and heading fast toward green, you need to be cautious until you know how he responds to carbs. As Sienne explained, acros have a working pancreas, so low carb food can sometimes stimulate the pancreas to produce more insulin, driving the number even lower. That makes it harder for you to control drops than it is for people with regular diabetic cats. You’ll see people here feeding a few bites of low carb food to control a drop – that probably will not work for you, so always have high carb food available. Jazzy is acro and usually low carb does work, but if I’m ever not sure I don’t hesitate to go for the gravy.
