Have you ever tried Miralax? It usually works. I'm seeing that this is a common problem with FD which I didn't know before. Vines for poop.

i have not yet tried it. Someone recommended this page about feline constipation http://www.felineconstipation.org/prevention.html: and it offers the following:

"A typical starting dose for a cat is 1/8 teaspoon total daily, divided into several smaller portions over the course of the day, but your vet should advise for your cat."

It seems I should consult the vet before giving him any?

Does anyone else have experience w/ 'self-administering' Miralax? He's only 8.5lbs.

It is always a good idea to consult with your vet before trying anything. I give Max 1/8 t every morning mixed in his baby food chaser after his gelcap. It works really well. If you haven't tried anything you could also try canned pumpkin, just a very tiny amount mixed in his food a few times a day. You want pumkin only, not the pie mix. The site you were referred to is excellent. Do put in a call to your vet as constipation can become severe if not treated. Do you put water in the canned food every time you feed? That might help too. Good luck.

yes, I always put water in his food, and I called my vet, but she is out today. Left a message for her but not expecting a call back before tomorrow. I also put a tiny bit of pumpkin (plain) in his breakfast this morning plus in the 2 small meals i left in his feeder. He did manage two small stools last night after straining the first time w/o success. But it wasn't his usual amount. So, that's why I added the pumpkin this morning. It wasn't much, as this site said to start slow (like any other changes in a cat's life!). guess I'll just have to see when i get home what is up. Perhaps grab a bottle of Miralax this evening though..

I think I put less than 1/4 t of pumpkin in his food as it can bulk it up. I agree it is wise to go slow with it and spread it out.

Megan, I've been dealing with poo issues with Zoey, too. That feline constipation site talks about getting to know your cat's colon by feel. There's a diagram and it talks about learning to feel your way around like your vet does. I was very apprehensive to do any of that ... but I did it anyway. After I felt my way around and massaged from front to back, Zoey finally had a BM after having gone a few days without one. I put a pinch of Miralax in Zoey's food each time I feed her. Just a dusting. She might get 1/8 of tsp in total throughout the whole day. It's really a ECID thing. I've been told it won't help with what is already there if Orren is impacted, but it will help keep some of the water he drinks in his colon to keep the new poo from becoming so hard. You want to go slow though so you don't cause him to have diarrhea and it be stuck behind impacted poop if there is any. I have noticed Zoey's number going up when she hasn't had a BM ... for what that's worth. :blackeye: When it comes to water, I put so much water in Zoey's food that it's more like soup. I leave some bigger pieces of her food not mashed up and blended but really, it's like soup. I feed her in a bowl not a plate. When the vet collected urine yesterday he said it was quite diluted and told me to keep doing it the way I'm doing it.

Good luck!

Hi @Rose; I too saw the diagram about feeling the kitty colon, lol, and was hesitant to try myself too. depending on what happens when i get home today (as in, is there anything else in the box) I may have to try that. Could I assume that impaction would mean no poo at all getting out? Last night he did pass 2 smaller, rounder pieces, which I know are not the typical desired cylindrical shape, and I think that means they're too dry, so they break up. I too make his meals soupy now, initially i was always adding water, but probably not enough. last 2 wks or so though I've cranked up the water. I still think his urine is pretty dilute though because a few times when he has gone over the edge of the box (his box is on a plastic storage tub lid for just such emergencies) and I've cleaned it up and has virtually no odor and is very light in color.

Unfortunately, when i called my new vet today, she was not in the office, not back till tomorrow. perhaps i should have just asked to see/talk to someone else? ...again I guess I'll assess tonight when I'm home. No matter what, picking up some Miralax seems warranted.

Wondering if the brief return to black last night was due to the trouble pooing, ontop of the infamous "new dose wonkiness". Goodness, all these terms and caveats and whatnot, it's enough to fry a beans brain!

Hope poor Zoey's foot is better soon and good luck w/ the potassium supplement issue too!

well, am/pm shots almost identical, almost certainly he at least made pink in between. no more poo in box. heavy water in dinner and tiny bit pumpkin. UPDATE: about 35 min. after dinner, small poo again, just 2 small round pieces . very hard, black.@? If he's getting anything out, does that mean he is NOT impacted??

what is it w/ me and trees? came home to find my back fence smooshed by a large dead tree that fell from the adjacent lot. Sigh....
