There is an intestinal bacteria...Clostridium difficile that can get out of hand in cats and it causes diarrhea and vomiting. It's a nasty bugger.
]Hi Marje. I just posted emergency vet update; he suspects it may be a bacterial thing; is that contagious? how do they get it? What is usually course of action/prescribed?[/quote]

Re: 3/24 Gobbles AMPS 287 +2 337 +4 277 ! emerg. vet UPDATE

Hi Kat, happy to hear Gobbles is back home and resting. Sorry I don't know anything about bacterial infections, but hoping it's nothing too serious and that he makes a full recovery soon. Sending good health vines for Gobby, and peaceful vines to you.

So good to hear you are back in the comforts of home with Gobby. Sounds like you've had quite the stressful day. Nothing but love and healing to both of you.

Re: 3/24 Gobbles AMPS 287 +2 337 +4 277 ! emerg. vet UPDATE

Lots of causes of it but if the system gets out of whack for whatever reason, then C diff can multiply fast and make them quite sick. I like using cerenia and ondansetron instead of metaclopromide but the metronidazole is really important. I've not used the amforol but it is an A/B where as the mettronidazole is more anti inflammatory....but seems to help also with bacterial infections.

I also used the SEB syrup when my one kitty had this. I just had to be sure and separate admin of it in time from the others because SEB coats the intestine and could interfere with absorption of meds if given all at the same time.

I'd be sure nausea is addressed if giving cypro. Nth e metaclopromide should help with that.

eta: as Sienne suggested, I'd give a probiotic, too. I use the Renew Life Ultimate Flora Critical Care. It's very palatable and is just a powder you mix in the food. You can give 1/3 cap bid.

SEB syrup? What is that?? The vet suggested giving him yogurt, if he would eat a little; I assume yogurt has probiotic properties? I don't have a container here handy, but I am doubting, in certain varieties, there carb count is minimal-your thoughts on yogurt?

Re: 3/24 Gobbles AMPS 287 +2 337 +4 277 ! emerg. vet UPDATE

SEB is slippery elm bark. It can coat the GI tract but you have to give it separate from any meds.

Yogurt can help. Plain, nonfat is what my vet suggested. The probiotics can really help with replacing the good bacteria.

Gobbles is so much better now. What an improvement. He's actually being a little more social than usual and nerdier than already is....

Re: 3/24 Gobbles AMPS 287 +2 337 +4 277 ! emerg. vet UPDATE

Did the vet give you any specific instructions re. the Amforol? It should not be given for more than 5 days and diagnosis should be reevaluated if there's no response after 2 - 3 days.

Because of the bactericidal activity of kanamycin, prolonged treatment may permit overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms (e.g., fungi). If remission of symptoms is not evident after 2 to 3 days treatment, the diagnosis should be re-established. Do not treat for longer than 5 days.

I've used metronidazole (Flagyl) with Gabby in the past without any problems. It's typically used for anerobic bacterial infections of the gut as well as protozoal infections. It also has anti-inflammatory properties so if that's what's causing the diarrhea, it can help.

I tend to agree with Marje. I think ondansatron or Cerenia are better for nausea and vomiting than metocloprimide (Reglan). The latter works to increase gastric motility. My vet has prescribed it for nausea in the past. At this point, I think there are better choices.

Some cats like yogurt (plain yogurt with active cultures). Most cats are lactose intolerant, though and I don't know that this is the time you want to find out if Gobbles is in that group. I also have no clue how much yogurt you'd need to feed to get the same amount of probiotic you'd get in a powder or pill. You can find the ReNew Ultimate at Whole Foods in the refrigerated supplement section. FortiFlora is available on-line. Another option is Pearls which are available at a pharmacy. The latter is a small pill.

RE: Amforol: He instructed me to give it every 12 hours for five days and only gave me enough for five days. RE: Reglan - I'll try it for now; he prescribed it to be given once per day, as needed, and only gave me six. RE: metoclopramide - He said to give him one dose tonight and then only as needed. I agree with you on the yogurt--I don't want to jeopardize a bout of lactose intolerance at this point in time!!! For now, I am going to use what was prescribed--needless to say, there was a lot of "friction" today at my place re: taking him to the emergency room/vet/meds/insulin/money & time involved in Gobbles' care

Re: 3/24 Gobbles AMPS 287 +2 337 +4 277 +10 315 vet UPDATE

Aw, I'm sorry about the "friction". I hope everything settles ASAP. A number of years ago, Trixie, Mario, and Frankie all has some sort of intestinal infection at the same time, and the metronidozale got them all back in order very quickly. I pray the same happens for Gobbles...it sounds like it's already in the works!

Thanks again to everyone who sent such caring wishes, prayers & vines! He is doing great; eating, peeing, preening and hanging close to mom & dad :)

Metaclopromide and Reglan are the same thing. I don't think you are confusing metronidazole with metaclopromide because it would be bizarre to give metronidazole once and then only as needed. That's usually given 7-10 days.

SEB syrup? What is that??
When you have a chance, please read back through page 1 of this condo. I left you a long explanation. SEB is not a probiotic. It just soothes the intestines. I wouldn't use yogurt. I'd either get the Pearls (at Walmart) or the Renew Ultimate. I switched Gracie from the Pearls
because it had palm oil, glycerin, and gelatin in it and I didn't want her to have those.

Glad he's better!

Do you remember how quickly the diarrhea went away?
