Yesterday's Condo:

Gobbles woke up in a good mood: kisses, social, purring, pee, ate a little & drank a little water. Unfortunately, we woke up a little late. Yesterday's shot was very late (given at +22) due to low numbers (did earn a decrease) and because I had to be gone 4 hours. I "shot through the bounce" yesterday with the .75 dose and then gave him the decreased .50 dose this morning at 6:45 a.m. (+13.25) which was 1 hour, 15 minutes late.

Also, he had diarrhea twice last night. My daughter and I noticed this morning (and I noticed it yesterday evening) that when he walks, it looks like his little but is swaying; that his back legs are almost crossing as he takes each step; I don't know the word to described it, kind of looks like he is "sashaying" (may be in pain?). I could hear his belly gurgling when he was sitting on my lap for his test this morning. I gave him 1/4 pepcid (2.5 mg).

I don't know what's wrong with him. As for the diarrhea--yesterday he had 3 different small servings of HC (2 different cans with gravy + 1 can with garden greens), along with chicken, chicken juice, pumpkin, 2 pieces of dry food, 2 pieces of oven-roasted turkey and LC; that right there could cause it, but I am concerned. Today the only food he is getting is wet LC (unless he drops very low).

The diarrhea has been off & on for a few days. I am going to do a search and see what the symptoms of IBD are.... He is definitely going to see his vet tomorrow!

Re: 3/24 Gobbles AMPS 287 ? sways while walking ? EYES

No medical advice for you this morning. Good luck with the diagnosis! Have a good day.

Re: 3/24 Gobbles AMPS 287 ? sways while walking ? EYES

All right, what is this nonsense? I hope Gobbles is feeling better today. Sending healing vibes your way today! Let us know how things progress and try to have a good day.

Re: 3/24 Gobbles AMPS 287 ? sways while walking ? EYES

Thanks Katie & Stella. Poor little guy--he has such a tough day yesterday--probably got at least 25 pokes and was low for a while.

Re: 3/24 Gobbles AMPS 287 ? sways while walking ? EYES

Get well soom Gobbles. Sorry for the diahrrea, is the HC gravy causing his upset stomach. You can use Karo instead of the HC gravy when Gobbles is diving low.

Re: 3/24 Gobbles AMPS 287 ? sways while walking ? EYES

Morning!
I'm sorry there are worries about Gobbles at your house this morning. Many healing vines and prayers for his tummy and walking. I don't have any experience with those issues so sorry not to be any help. I hope the poo issues clear up and the walking also.
Try and have a good day.. keep us updated.
hugs and scritches from us

Re: 3/24 Gobbles AMPS 287 ? sways while walking ? EYES

Thanks Rosy's Mom & Mary :) Other than the diarrhea/walking thing--he seems fine... He did have lots of HC yesterday and one of those cans had visible garden greens in it...

Re: 3/24 Gobbles AMPS 287 ? sways while walking ? EYES

It's possible that Gobbles is sensitive to gluten. HC food and the kibble all have gluten. Next time you need to bump up his numbers, try using either honey or Karo with a small amount of LC. Gabby is gluten sensitive and this is what I do. (It seemed like she never had a problem with gluten until she was on a LC, gluten-free diet. Now, if she gets more than a bit of gravy from HC, it throws her system off. It's not an uncommon food allergy/sensitivity.)

As for the swaying, Gobbles electrolytes could be off due to the diarrhea. If it persists, I'd take a video and bring Gobbles in to the vet.

Re: 3/24 Gobbles AMPS 287 ? sways while walking ? EYES

I hope the sashaying and liquipoos stop (unless of course, Gobbles is FABULOUS and the sashay is part of the awesomeness    )

I never though of Sienne's information regarding HC and gluten. Something to think about. Leo has IG problems sometimes but he doesn't like HC so much. We use Fortiflora periodically to deal with it. Good luck today and have a good one. Thanks for visiting last night!

Re: 3/24 Gobbles AMPS 287 ? sways while walking ? EYES

I hope Gobbles is all better today! Never would have thought about a gluten allergy--this site is so informative! Anyway, thinking of you and your sweet one and lifting you both up for a peaceful day. :YMHUG:

Thanks Sienne. I have "heard" talk here on the boards about some peoples' cats having a gluten allergy or as being sensitive to gluten. Next time I need to bring up his numbers, how about I just rub a little (how much?) karo on his gums (he won't willing eat karo, honey or syrup). I did the scruff-pinch test re: dehydration. His hair pops back into place pretty quick. I don't know if I should push the chicken juice on him (so he gets some water) as I am trying to feed him wet LC-only today. I have been adding water to his wet food and assume that is helping with dehydration. Is there anything you can suggest that I give him for the diarrhea? Pepcid is for belly acid only, correct? Should I give him pumpkin (adamantly refuses it, but I had force-fed him some last night) and how much?

Thank you Phyllis! Oh yes, the things we learn here & I always keep in mind, if I am looking for information, to take a past look at my earlier posts. When you get a chance, just for fun, take a look at your very first few posts and compare that to everything you've learned so far (and you are a very fast learner)!!! I do this from time to time....and I thank God for this board!!!

Re: 3/24 Gobbles AMPS 287 ? sways while walking ? EYES

Kat --

Gabby won't eat pumpkin either so I don't know how much is enough. I know Marje uses squash baby food and her kitties seem to like that better. You might want to check in with her. I typically have used FortiFlora or other probiotics when Gabby has had trouble with diarrhea. FortiFlora is available on-line. I've also used ReNew Ultimate which you can usually find in the refrigerated supplements at Whole Foods and I think someone mentioned finding it at GNC. Pearls is also an option. They area small enough pill that it's easy to give a cat. (My vet mentioned this brand as an option.)

Giving water/chicken juice, etc. is fine for dehydration which can result from diarrhea or vomiting. However, it's not the same as electrolytes being off. Loss of fluid can effect sodium/potassium balance. It's not something you want to mess with unless you know, via lab tests, that these levels are off.

He hates it; last time I used it I had to rub a little on the roof of his mouth. Should I try that? About how much? Last time I gave (forced!!) it on him, I wet my fingertip, dipped it in the Fortiflora...

Re: 3/24 Gobbles AMPS 287 ? sways while walking ? EYES

I wouldn't force anything. You can cause food aversions or get bitten. It's not worth it when there are other options.

You should be able to find Pearls at a local pharmacy. They are small and you can simply pill Gobbles. Or, try the baby food squash.

Re: 3/24 Gobbles AMPS 287 ? sways while walking ? EYES

I hope the vet visit tomorrow goes well and gives you some answers.

I use a little baby food squash sometimes for J.D. to soften his stools. I hope I'm using it the right way, and that it will also help with firming up Gobbles stools.

J.D. wobbles once in awhile, but he hasn't since his anal glands were expressed. Knock On Wood. I don't know if that was the cause.

I wish you luck and sending healing and feel better vines to your boy.

I attempted to squeeze out the anals yesterday, but he fought me ferociously. I would really like to do that and I know my daughter will hold him for me, but not sure if I should mess with him today? Maybe give it a try? He won't like it, but he does have a history of his anals needed cleaned pretty often and I haven't done it for at least a few months...

Re: 3/24 Gobbles AMPS 287 ? sways while walking ? EYES

Poor Gobbles. Feel better baby.

Re: 3/24 Gobbles AMPS 287 ? sways while walking ? EYES

Oh, Kat and Gobby :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

One thing I can tell you about the FF, aside from the fact that you already know he hates it...giving him just a teeny bit won't do a thing anyway, so there's definitely no point in trying to force him. If I remember correctly, I think the box says to use an entire packet per meal...which is a lot of FF.

Sending tons of "feel better" prayers your way....

Re: 3/24 Gobbles AMPS 287 ? sways while walking ? EYES

getting ready to leave for emergency vet clinic...will check back in later

Re: 3/24 Gobbles AMPS 287 +2 337 ! going to emergency vet

I just noticed you mentioned you tried to express his gland yesterday, and today he is swaying...maybe that's the connection?

Sending even more prayers for the ER visit...will be watching for updates!!!

Re: 3/24 Gobbles AMPS 287 +2 337 ! going to emergency vet

Good morning Kat. So sorry to hear that Gobbles is having problems. We have our fingers crossed that all goes wel at the vets.

One of the first signs of neuropathy that PurrFace exhibited was wobbly rear legs and a slightly arched back. When he walked it looked like he was intoxicated. Started him on Mythl B12 and he walks and runs steadily now but still has a bit of an arched back. May not be Gobbles problem but thought I'd mention it just in case everything else is ruled out.

Will be watching your condo for an update. We have Gobbles and you in our Prayers.

Re: 3/24 Gobbles AMPS 287 +2 337 ! going to emergency vet

Sending many healing vines for Gobbles, Kat. I'm glad you are taking him in.

One of the very best things I have ever used for GI upset is slippery elm bark. You can buy it in bulk at a health food store in the loose powder form. You don't need much....1/2 cup will last a long time so I'd even get less than that until you know it works. Don't buy capsules.

You want to make a syrup out of it. So mix together 1 tsp of the powder with 1/2 cup of pure water and warm gently over the stove...do not boil. Lightly whisk it to get the powder to dissolve. When it is just a little thicker (it won't get real thick until it cools), take it off the stove and store it in a glass jar in the frig for up to one week. Administer 5ml orally through a syringe, no needle, twice a day. Separate it from other meds ....either give it an hour before or two hours after other oral meds. It's tasteless.

It soothes the intestines and is a great cure for diarrhea and constipation although I use Beechnut Homestyle Stage 2 baby food squash (no sugar added) for constipation for Gus. He likes it better and I only have to give it once a day. SEB is also nutritive and helps control tummy acid. Until Gus got a lot further along in his CKD, I gave it instead of Pepcid because I don't like using anti-acids in us or the cats. It worked well for a long time.

There is an intestinal bacteria...Clostridium difficile that can get out of hand in cats and it causes diarrhea and vomiting. It's a nasty bugger.

Please let us know how he is and what the vet says.

[quote="Marje and Gracie"There is an intestinal bacteria...Clostridium difficile that can get out of hand in cats and it causes diarrhea and vomiting. It's a nasty bugger.[/quote]Hi Marje. I am getting ready to post emergency vet update; he suspects it may be a bacterial thing; is that contagious? how do they get it?

Re: 3/24 Gobbles AMPS 287 +2 337 ! going to emergency vet

Took to emergency vet: SNAP negative (enzymes good). Suspects possibly a bacterial infection. Gave fluid sub-Q, examination, temperature, respiration (all good) and metoclopramide injection. Sent home with 3 rx's: amforol, metoclopramide & metronidazole. Said to give cypro 1x for today and hold off on denamarin & zobaline for a day or 2. Follow up with vet if symptoms come back or worsen in 36-48 hours. Report being faxed to Gobbles' vet. He ate 1/2 can FFLC when we got home and is now resting.
