3/24 Daphne AMPS 160, +3 56, +69 Question?

Can I get some ideas on Daphne's SS, the only answer so far for her AMPS high numbers compared to her all day and even PMPS is "dawn effect". I didn't research this phenomenon, but I will…just wanted to see if anyone has other ideas.

Do you think it might be possible to get a late night test sometime this weekend, or a couple of them (like +6 or later)? Her night cycles are so different than her day cycles that I'm curious what her numbers are doing overnight.

Well, Libby I got some test and I guess as I expected, she is a mirror image for daytime +5-+9 as she is for nighttime, +5-+10. Then, @+11 nighttime, there she goes, 151 :shock: I have no idea what happens to make her do that @ +11 and high AMPS :?: :?: And its is so consistant too. I really am curious about this more and more. I hope I can get more eyes on this, maybe with an "?" on post will help.

Oh, and I stayed up all night last night till 5:30 AM to get the test, and at 3:30 AM "Medical Alert" called me and said my DML was back in the hospital…so glad I was up, that would have been a hard thing to wake up and hear. (She never told us she signed up for it, we bugged her for a year to do it, and then she doesn't tell us she did, so surprise) :o She's fine, just chest pain, but nothing...

This one looks promising, "Adjust the time of your medication or insulin from dinnertime to bedtime", because, "Some researchers believe the natural overnight release of hormones — including growth hormones, cortisol, glucagon and epinephrine — increases insulin resistance, causing blood sugar to rise." Now this is humans they are talking about, but maybe the same thing happens in cats too. This would take some doing because I would have to move in 15min. increments to get her to a new, later time, but I may do it if things don't change.

Barb- forgive me in advance for asking a question you have perhaps been asked often in the past...
but have you tried giving Daphne a mini-meal at her night cycle +9?

I understand your physical limitations, and frankly...the late cycle snack only works for a limited amount of kitties
with a sputtering pancreas (otherwise, it forces what's left of the insulin shot to work harder and results in higher preshots)...
but I'm curious whether the wise ones think it might be an option to try.
It really worked for Binks...contrary to what you would expect, the +9 snack brought his preshot numbers down :?
I know it seems counterintuitive, but her numbers are so pretty, except for the amps...

(I think I'd put "question" in your subject line to get some experienced eyes here)

Well....that's very interesting about that pretty good pop up between +9 and +11 and then she's flat into AMPS.

Others may have an opinion on this, but I think I'd try not to worry too much about that AMPS. I know others have said it's the last number to come down. All her other numbers look great. I'm not really
sure what to suggest to you to bring that down other than just patience. It's nice to see that her pm cycles are like her am cycles. We may just have to all go with the dawn phenomenon theory and wait it
out.

Celi, I have done that before and I actually was told that it could help, and of course I forgot I did that. I think it helped, so I'm going to try it again. Its great that it helped Binks

and have patience. Yes, this is the problem, ME! :lol: If you ask anyone about me, the first thing they would probably say is, I have no patience, and my DH is the opposite, so it makes for an interesting life :lol:

I thought the Mayo Clinic did a good job explaining the "dawn phenomenon". I'm the kind of person that needs explanations for things that I don't understand. So at least I know the theory behind the name now.

Thanks for the vines for my DML, she is still feeling ok, but they are keeping her for more test.
 
Serryn, I'm glad you liked our condo. Most people don't know me yet, only being here for 4 months, but I am such a curious research addict. You see, since I have an "incurable" illness for 30 years, I became my own Dr. and it just became more of a hobby to read medical information…can't get enough of it. So, here I go, Daphne is going to be my "subject" now, :lol: especially since I didn't get very far on my own illness :roll: Thanks goodness for Daphne's sake, I ended up here :?
 
I have another question (I know, I'm always asking questions!). Does Daphne usually eat differently at night? My cats do. Once they go to bed, they don't get up much to nibble.

It's true that for some cats a snack at +8 or +9 can help bring down the preshot. That usually happens if the pancreas is functioning to some degree. If she nibbles more during the day, that might be helping her keep her numbers lower throughout the AM cycle. It's also true that usually the AMPS number is the last number to come down.
 
Definitely lots of good learnin' going on over here tonight! I tried a +8 snack with Trix a few times, with mixed results. Unfortunately, we could never give it a true test, because she (surprisingly) never took to the auto-feeder...

Despite Daphne's AMPS, she's always looking great!
 
Hi Barb,
We give Rusty a small +9 snack during the daytime cycle, but only because he's hungry then. At night he gets his "nighttime" food (about 2 oz.) when we go to bed at about +4.5 and is then on his own. Usually he eats it immediately! I don't notice any particular pattern in AMPS vs. PMPS: sometimes one is higher and sometimes the other is higher. (I'm sure this is a big help to you!!!! :smile: )

Have a good evening. I'd go with "Dawn phenomenon" for now.

Sienne, I'm so sorry, I missed your post when I was on before. Thanks for the Pet Wiki, good reading, and I bookmarked it for future research :-D

Libby, yes to your question, she does nibble during the day and not as much at night. So I guess that will be my next test, hate to wake her to eat, but better for food, then for testing…I don't think she will complain much, since she has a very big appetite.

Thanks Amy, I know Daphne is doing so well, I really don't want to sound like I'm complaining, I'm just very curious about health stuff in general. And of course I would love for her to be OTJ someday.
 
For some reason, I thought you tried doing a +8 or so meal and then took it away....

Hey Barb - I know what mean about wanting and needing to know "stuff". I'm the same way. I guess that's why we drive our vets crazy - they aren't comfortable with clients knowing things!

If you're interested in trying an auto-feeder, let me know...Trix's has been gathering dust since last summer because she won't go for it. You can program it to open and close at any time.

Daphne is doing so well...I'd love to see her go OTJ, too!
