Hello all, my name is Emma and I have an 8yo male neutered cat called jack who I could not get weight off not so long ago then all of a sudden within 3 weeks of a sickness/illness kind of stomach bug symptoms he dropped from his heaviest of 7.2kg to 4.7kg.. my vet got a blood workup done and thought by looking at him he had hyperthyroidism but on getting the results of that test he has diabetes and his BG is all over the place and he is ravenous one day and won't eat another. He is on 3units of caninsulin every 12hours. He started on 2units but was still losing weight so my vet added another unit. His weight was increasing and we got him to 5.2kg in 2 weeks.
He then got a cold/sinus infection and it has set him back massively he has lost that again and he is down to 4.9kg
I have studied all the common cat food brands here in the UK and I'm not happy with the ingredients to be honest, I have copied the recipe on catinfo.org and he was loving it then for whatever reason refused it. I have been online ordering animonda carney on zooplus and that is hit or miss depending on his appetite that day.
I have a home BG tester for cats and dogs and his BG is very high all the time on a good day it can be UK terms 30.2mmol or somewhere near the 530ml/DL (not sure if that's correct still working on converting them)
Anyway any help or advise would be amazing,

Thanks in advance, Emma.

Welcome Emma and Jack
If you can give us information about jack ,click on the blue link
Here is a link helping us to help you link. If you noticed, our members have some basic information about their cat's in their signature. This helps us to not pester you by asking the same questions (your cat's name, insulin type, date of diagnosis, etc.) repeatedly. We also have a link to our spreadsheet in our signature. We are very numbers driven. The spreadsheet is a record of your cat's progress. By linking it in your signature, we can follow along and provide feedback should you need the help.

You will see the signature at the end of everyone's post in gray

Also I'll give you the link to set up our spreadsheet , we track our cats BG to see how the insulin is working
If you have trouble setting it up I will ask Bhooma
@Bandit's Mom to set it up for you

The link will also explain how the spreadsheet works

One suggestion would be to switch to a longer acting insulin Caninsulin is not a great insulin for cats. Most cats respond better to long acting insulins. Good choice is ProZinc
There are currently two insulins licensed for diabetes treatment in the UK - Prozinc and Caninsulin. Your vet is required to start initial treatment with one of them. Of the two, Prozinc is typically the better one for cats (longer duration of effect

Jacks story sounds so familiar to my Lando’s. Hello and welcome! I know you will get amazing and helful advice here, the people are truly fantastic. Well wishes to you and jack.

Welcome to the club Emma and Jack, a lot of members have had good results with ProZinc and not so good results with Canisulin. Canisulin is a dog insulin, from what I understand, so that kinda makes sense. Works better on canines than felines.

I am new to all this as well so certainly not one of the seasoned gurus with sage advice like Diane. But I'll see you around the forum, this place is fantastic and the people are angels.
