Nacho is on day 4! AMPS 70 - still going strong.

Question - is it still normal for Nacho to meow like a crazy cat when I feed him?

It seems like he is very hungry since he eats immediately - but then he goes back to being normal. Maybe it is just excitement of me opening the can of food.

I used to free feed him dry food (before switching to 100% wet food), and he would always meow as a kitten. Maybe he is just used to it? Just want to make sure he's not starving.

He has been consistent with his weight from diagnosis to now between 13.4-13.8lbs. He is still a big cat! Just not 17-18 lbs like he used to be! haha.

Happy day 4!

Not sure why he is meowing could be anyone of the mentioned or something else. How often are you feeding him? With FD it is better to feed smaller meals more often. I see your only feeding him twice you might want to split the food into three or four meals if possible.

Is he maintaining his weight? If so I wouldn't be concerned at this point. My kitten fosters go crazy when I feed them and I have to limit how much because one had a few extra ounces on her. It's not at all true that you can't overfeed a kitten.

Right now twice a day - but I think I will get an automatic feeder and try that to see if I can spread it out!

Yes he is :) He has been holding at about 13.4-13.8 since diagnosed and changed to wet food etc. I think he is just a vocal animal!

Max started to become more vocal with age. Once he lost his hearing it was even more so. If losing weight I would wonder about thyroid but since he's maintaining I wouldn't be concerned. Love the green!:D

Congrats on Day 4 :D:D:D:D

My two cats do a duet while I am preparing their food, ( six times a day )

Just curious, did you feed more than twice a day while he was on insulin?

Before Insulin I used to free feed dry food (terrible!!), so he was used to eating whenever he felt like it. Now I know!

Yes twice a day while on insulin - before AMPS & PMPS. Will it mess up his possible remission if I switch to smaller meals now? or that will probably help it even more.
Good question, I don't really know the answer to that. That is part of me that says, why mess with success. How about putting a question mark on your thread and ask that question. I will be curious to see what the others say. I am kind of at the other end of the spectrum that you. I give 6 meals a day, even size and I am afraid to reduce those calories to a few less meals.

Did anyone ever post the OTJ instructions for you?

Start the trial on the next green pre shot. [Too late, already started and on day 4! :D]

If he/she is green at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time; just feed small meals and go about your day. If he/she is blue at your normal "PS", feed a small meal and test again after about 3 or 4 hours. If his/her number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then the pancreas is working!

Post every day so we can monitor your progress and see if any tweaks are needed. He/she may have a sporadic blue number. Don't panic but post before you decide whether to shoot so we can have a discussion.

After 14 days of no insulin, we have a party!!

Sometimes the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support in the form of resuming insulin. It's not the end of the world if that happens; we just give him/her the support needed. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to take our time to get that than to rush into remission just to have it fail later on.

Good luck with the trial!!!

Once he/she is through the trial successfully, you enter a new phase. Your cat is still diabetic but has now become diet-controlled. Continue feeding low carb food in the manner successful for your kitty. If you decide to change his/her feeding schedule, let your meter be your guide to the best times to feed. Avoid medications with sugar in them and steroid medications unless they are medically essential. Continue testing blood glucose weekly for the first month and then monthly forever. It's a good idea to weigh him/her monthly. Weight should remain stable. If he/she seems "off" or sick, or is showing signs of diabetes (excessive drinking, eating, urinating, weight loss), test his/her blood glucose right away. Keep the teeth and gums clean and healthy; dental issues can bring a cat out of remission. If you see rising blood glucose numbers, it's time for a visit to the vet!
