Re: 3/22 Simba AMBG 104 ATrak

Congratulations! Wow, I missed all this too! From what I've heard Blue wilderness is very good quality food, just really expensive. Check online for deals and coupons. Tess didn't like it at first, but w/ the recent food strike I bought a couple of cans today to try again. Have you considered homemade, raw or cooked? You have complete control of what goes in it then!

Re: 3/22 Simba AMBG 104 ATrak

The idea of preparing a raw food diet for kitty is just too daunting right now. lol. I agree it seems to be the absolute best tho!

He always seemed to feel the best around 115-130 (ATrak) Now with blue wilderness he's down to 95 ish and not feelin as good. you can see it in they way he huddles himself and the look in his eye.

So I"m thinking to mix the blue wilderness (because he really seems to like it) with fancy feast. Give him carbs he's more comfortable with. Course, I'm uber new at this - any advice would be much appreciated!

Scuse me while I go cut and paste letters from magazines into love poems (edit: CREEPY love poems) to send to CD's emailz.

Re: 3/22 Simba AMBG 104 ATrak

Keep in mind that Simba is pretty new to all of this, and while he may not seem to feel the best at 95, his body is still adjusting to what "normal" BGs feel like. I would be careful adding in carbs because you don't want him to head upwards and have the OTJ Trial fail. I'm sure others more experienced than I will weigh in soon! :) Great day 2!!

Re: 3/22 Simba AMBG 104 ATrak

yeah you're right.. I'm just too new at this!! I just want him feelin gudz  What you're saying makes absolute sense to me, thank you

So turns out the FF I mixed in was 50% prot and only 3%carb. lol. He's less energized at this level. just kinda mopey and droopy.

Day 2! Go Simba!!
Try Wellness Chicken or Turkey. They are both 4% and most cats like them a lot. (Rusty prefers the turkey)
Have a good evening, guys.

Ella & Rusty

Ty's! Simba thanks you too! He's up and investigating - searching for bags to lick, I suspect..

Wellness was one of the ones I was looking at, yeah.. They don't sell that or merrick's at my pet store. I'll have to order some samples through one of the affiliates. Thanks for giving me an idea of what % might be nice to try.. I was looking at the fancy feast list and they have lots of 3's and 4's I can try while I wait for the mail to get here!

I don't like switching him around so much, but.. he seems to be eating as well as he ever did. I'm still mixing his food with a little bit of recovery cuz he really seems to like it - it's 6% carbs but I'm using way less of it than I was. Maybe that's contributing to lowered numbers too.....

the cat's making me crazy! Head esplode nao.

Thanks for picking up the bits, blowing em off and handing em back to me - always appreciated you guys  go simba!

In my humble opinion, the whole cat is important. I agree with Ella/Rusty, If Simba is droopy with 2-3% I might try giving food that was about 4-5% and see if that helps. I would not go higher than that if you don't have to. But 79 - ATrak is 49 on a regular meter and perhaps he doesn't do as well running that low. Many cats do fine at the low levels but some may do better running at the mid-point of normal. 49 is definitely at the low point of normal.

But like most anything in this world... what is 'normal'? You have to find Simba's normal. My kitty never ran that low unless he was on insulin. His normal is at the higher end 80-100 (110-130 AlphaTrak). He does very well at high/normal. But that's just him. I give him foods that are 2-3% most of the time with a few exceptions.. up to 5% carbs.

You and Simba are still finding your way through this diabetes stuff and OTJ. I do believe his trial will be a raging success. He hasn't been diabetic very long at all and the steroid shot was probably the instigator in his FD.

What was the % carbs of the food he ate before his diagnosis? What food was his body used to before the dx? Oh, I see... 6% stuff. Not too far off of some of the FF varieties that are 4%. I'd split the difference between 2% (droopy) and 6% (kind of higher) and go for the 4%. Wow, that sounds scientific. Hahaha!

Good luck!

hehe. I likes yo psuedo science.

Actually, he was on DRY before diagnosis... I only put him on the 6% stuff when he wouldn't eat, and that was his very first foray into wet food.

The dry he was on was Royal Canin Mobility... I don't see that on J&B's list, but I assume that being dry it's high with teh carbs.

He's definitely droopy and seems to be mad at me. Not coming over for cuddles.

I haven't left the dry out for him since diagnosis. Do you think it'd be a bad idea to put it out for him again?

Yup. Dry = Bad idea. You were just testing me, right?

There are better ways to get him a few more carbs.

As far as tastiness to make him happy.... have you heard of Fortiflora? It is a powder that you sprinkle on top of food. It's a probiotic so it's very healthy. But mainly most kitties LOVE it and it can help them with their appetite. I was a little skeptical since often my kitties didn't get excited about some highly recommended treats that most cats like. But OMG, they love the Fortiflora.
I believe it is the same as the coating on dry food and is what makes kibble so tasty to kitties.

Some vets carry the stuff. I ordered a box online and am very pleased with it.

ohhh yeah. someone did mention fortiflora to me awhile ago.... probiotic, so it'll help him poops!? he's been having poop problems.... the restoralax isn't working as consistently as I thought it would. (but I'll continue to try!)

I'll see if I can pick some fortiflora up tomorrow to give it a go. I think what'd make him happy is a few more carbs. it's really disheartenning to see him all hunched and unhappy. I'll pick up some 4% fancy feast tomorrow too
