Today is Day 5 for Elie's OTJ Trial!

Good morning AMBG and looking forward to a good PMBG too!!!

Question for y'all...We are noticing slightly that his BG is steadily getting lower throughout the day. He is eating well and has much more energy. Is this something that can happen after a bout of diabetes like this...that his pancreas can start over producing insulin on it's own? We did catch him at a 50 at noon, which we gave him a good plate of food for. But really just wanting to know if we need to watch out for anything, or if this is seemingly normal?

Hope all the kitties are having a good day out there!

Happy Day 5, Elie! Lookin' good!!
Hi Tanya, I don't think the numbers are anything to worry about. They are all very close and basically the same number: fluctuations. If you are not giving insulin, it is impossible for Elie to have a hypo.

Keep it goin', Elie!

p.s. I was under the impression that in an OTJ trial you only test at AMBG and PMBG. Perhaps someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

OTJ trial you do only need to test AM and PM if the numbers stay green. There's a food test you can do to confirm the pancreas is doing it's job too, but I can't remember the specifications for that.

Elie's numbers are great, you don't need to feed the 50's or even worry if he's in the 40's without insulin - these are also normal numbers for many non-diabetic cats :-D

Elie you rock

In a cat, the beta cells in the pancreas can "recover" -- hence, the cat goes into remission. However, this also means that the diabetes is diet controlled. If you feed Elie a bowl of ice cream or kibble, you're going to see high numbers. (Ask Celi about Binks return from the Falls.) What you're seeing when numbers go down after having eaten is the pancreas is producing endogenous insulin in response to BG increasing from food. The endogenous insulin brings the numbers back down.

As far as numbers being in the 40s or 50s, that's not a problem. This may be your cat's normal BG range. Without insulin being injected, there's no risk of hypoglycemia. This isn't a matter of the pancreas producing too much insulin.

right - you only need to test at am and pm - the regular time you did before. if you get greens, that's it. if it's a blue number, give a little bit of food and check in a couple of hours and see if his pancreas has let out insulin and pushed it back into green.

somehow, i don't think you've got any trouble ahead. looks pretty darned nice for elie! what great numbers!!!

This is so encouraging to see Elie doing great OTJ! What an inspiration to us on the juggling! Keep up those great figures Elie!

Ok thanks everyone

We did make a "signifigant" change in his food when he was diagnosed, so it looks like the new low carb wet food diet is working :RAHCAT

We do want to change to a better quality low carb food soon, as the current food they are eating is making them a bit chubby. We will pick up a few wellness wet cans this weekend to see what flavours the other 2 kitties like and see if it makes any difference in their weight before giving any to Elie. He's doing so well right now without insulin, we are reluctant to make a food change with him. But...i think he's gaining back some of the weight he lost while he was ill and not eating.
