Happy Spring- one day late, and Happy Caturday! Lately Tiger and I have been Up Up and Away in that beautiful balloon, and this was through no fault of the insulin, it was clearly user error. :oops: All 5 P's are present, I am preparing to approach our vet about a dental. Neither of Tiger's vets have wanted to do a dental, I know they are afraid she won't come out of the anesthesia. Yet, with all of the kitties dental reports, I fear I may have to bite the bullet on this one as it is so important to get this checked out.:nailbiting:

Sending healing vines to all kitties in need, includingBoomer, Tess, Vyktor and Tricia's Minka and Sasha; also to those with upcoming ultrasounds- Ella & Rusty, I know that is coming up shortly, it's scary to wait through it! Also vines to Marje- who I think is down with the crud- I have just spent a week with DH onut sick as well as my son, so you have my deepest sympathies! :bighug:

I wanted a dental on Boomer six months ago. My private practice vet didn't think he needed one nor did that vet think I should start fluids 'cuz Boomer was just a tenth point out of normal on his creatinine.

Wrestled for three months with that decision and finally went to the clinic at work. So glad I did. Wish I hadn't waited. No, he's not FD. But his CKD worsened and his mouth sure did in the interim.

No advice. ECID. You know your Tiger. You know the risks. Talk with a dental specialist maybe. Certainly more vet opinions may be a wise choice. I dunno. Just vines. That's about all I can offer...vines.

In the meantime, I hope you and the girl enjoy the Lagoon.

Thanks Marilyn and that is exactly what I needed to hear! But I never thought about trying to get a dental specialist, I hope I don't need a referral, but I will definitely look into that. Thanks for the suggestion and we hope only the best for your crew as well!
 
I know Tiger has plenty of health issues, but why are the vets so concerned about her ability to come through the anesthesia? Minka is 16, has COPD, HyperT and Renal Lymphoma, and the vets don't hesitate to knock her out as needed. We haven't had any problems with it (HUGE anti-jinx) on any of our elderly, special needs kitties. If there are dental issues that need to be addressed, they could be a bigger threat to her well-being than being anesthetized. Just MHO.

Meanwhile, it's nice to see Tiger playing in the lagoon with Cinco and the other kitties. :D

Tiger's creatinine isn't that high that I would worry about her not coming out from anesthesia. I think if she were mine I would discuss this with a vet dentist but be prepared that it is quite expensive. In California you don't need a referral. It might really help Tiger but I too get scared with anesthesia so it is a tough decision. The thing is the longer you wait the worse things might get. Hugs. Prayers and vines.

Tricia, Elise, thanks so much for your input- this is exactly what I needed to hear. I wonder if this clinic doesn't have a lot of experience with the whole feline diabetes thing. But it gives me hope that Minka could get through it because it is scary with her multitide of health problems.

And Elise, I have been reading so much about the harm that comes from untreated gingivitis! Thanks!

I think that a vet dental specialist would be the way to go. Hope you can find one.

Thanks for visiting us and for the empathy with regard to the U/S. We're going, apparently, to a state-of-the-art vet hospital and will have a consult with a highly regarded IM specialist as well as the U/S, so I'm feeling confident that we will get some good information. Stay tuned!

Oh my, look at that little surprise at +10! :D:eek: Surf a little higher please Tiger.

Neko's last two dentals were with a board certified dental specialist. Neko's vet had no problem with giving me a referral when I asked for one. And yes, it did cost more, but the first one saved a tooth and the second one found a tooth that was gone bad but only visible under X-rays. Neko has a heart murmur, I wanted the peace of mind that a dental specialist gives. They do Doppler monitoring throughout the procedure and have a technician monitoring her vitals the whole time. They also have a lot of experience doing dentals on older animals with secondary conditions. They've never lost an animal while doing a dental - I had to ask last time, cause a friend's diabetic cat had passed away from a heart condition during a dental(regular vet) just two months before Neko had her last dental. Needless to say, I was worried. :nailbiting: When Mariko got a dental done on Lucy, she got a board certified anesthesiologist vet to attend for even more security.
 
What a nice surf for Tiger today. :D It is scary to have our kitties put under anesthesia, but I think we have to be careful with mouth issues because of the FD. Any infection can cause higher BGs and be harder to get rid of. I hate taking Furball for dentals, but she is scheduled for her third one this coming Friday.
 
Hey Tiger, were you looking for Max in the deep end? He was a good boy and didn't repeat that trick. You need to be good and surf nicely tonight. Hopefully Max will keep you company in the higher end of the green floor.:):D

Do you have reason to be concerned about her teeth - bad breath, dribbling, funny eating style, red gums? If you don't maybe she can just have a sedation and x-ray to check things out rather than a full anaesthesia. If you do I would start looking for a dental specialist.

I got a referral to a dental vet for my Lucy and we went to a vet teaching hospital where they have a specialist anesthetist vet in attendance. They also have a wider range of available anesthetics and I was so pleased with how Lucy did with the anesthetic. An hour after the dental and Lucy cleaned her plate at the hospital and was discharged from the hospital early because of how well she did. Our local vet would not have had the range of anesthetic medications nor dental x-ray machines. The dental vet consulted with the anesthetic vet about what anesthetic medications to use for the smoothest recovery for older cats and they also had extra anesthetic monitoring equipment which our local vet does not have so I would definitely recommend a dental specialist at a specialist centre or vet teaching hospital to have the dental done. That said lots of cats do just fine at the local vet with anesthetics. All the best with your decisions.
