Hi Everyone,
We all had a good night and just now Rusty and I woke up from a long schmooze. It's snowing outside. Edward just got his bread together so that he can bake tomorrow. We're about to go to the post office. (I have no bruises or bumps or strains from my fall into the icy, muddy puddle yesterday--yay!).
The snowshoe bushwhack was almost a catastrophe. One of the hikers, an experienced woodsman who likes to bushwhack, strayed from the rest of them (there were only 4 in all). He often does this and no one thought anything of it. Long story short: the 3 who were together got off track (this was not a real trail, but usually one can discern the path and the direction) and wound up on the shore of the lake about 1/2 mile away from where they had planned. They thought the other hiker was probably there already, but when they got there they didn't see him or his snowshoe tracks. They started back, looking for his tracks and when they got back to the road where the cars were, his car was still there. It was getting late (6 p.m.) and there was about an hour left of daylight (but the woods were quite dark). They decided wisely not to go back themselves to look, and found a spot where there was cell service (cell service is not universal here in the mountains) and called the ranger station. Two rangers eventually found him and walked him out. In the meantime we were all gathered at the house where the potluck party was. At about 8 p.m. we learned that he was Ok and he arrived shortly after that at the party.
Apparently the snow was very difficult to walk on, even with snowshoes. Our guy was struggling with his new snowshoes, which were too small and narrow for the conditions. He was tired and his knee was bothering him, but he was very glad to sit down with a glass of wine at the party.
Lots of lessons reinforced on that outing. I'm so glad I didn't go. The snow conditions would have killed my hamstring. And I would have been weak from being sick all week.
Wow, didn't mean to write a book. Rusty is good and has eaten all of his breakfast. He prefers Merrick these days, so I hope I have enough until I can get back to Plattsburgh.
Wishing all a fine weekend and continuing to send healing vines.
