Off to a good start! I am super extra busy with my pet sitting biz for the next 10 days or so but keeping as much if an eye in Elian as I can. Glad I caught this 64 - he's eating lunch now (classic FF) and I will test again shortly.

Nice! Now stay there, Elian - green is a good color on you!

Re: 3/21 - ELIAN: amps 379; 64 +5; 485 pmps-is there a reas

Is there something I'm missing or doing wrong? Why is it that Elian can do well during the day and then go sky high at night? Is there anything I can or should be doing differently?

That would be a bounce.
Someone else can explain the particulars...
but Elian's liver is panicking... dumping glucagon.. and you get that bounce.

Elian has to get used to being in greens. It takes a while...

Thanks. I just wonder how long his little pancreas can continue so BIG bounces. But the good part is that he's spending more time in the green. But as was pointed out to me a while back - it would be better if he slowly came down - surf the yellows and blues rather than such big drops from 400's to greens. :-(

Re: 3/21 - ELIAN: amps 379; 64 +5; 485 pmps-is there a reas

Bounces occur for two reasons.
  • Chances are Elian's BG was in a diabetic range before he was diagnosed. His body got used to the high number and treated them as the "new" normal. So, when he is in lower numbers, his liver and pancreas panic and release glucagon (a stored form of glucose) an counterregulatory hormones. These cause the spike in numbers.
  • BG numbers drop fast. Like today, when Elian dropped roughly 300 points in 5 hours. This likewise cause his liver and pancreas to panic.

Thanks for the explanation. So do I need to worry about his liver and pancreas? Anything I can do?

This is a normal response. Most of our kitties go through the process. Some are just "better" at it than others. Your observation, though is on point -- Elian is spending more time in lower numbers. As his body readjusts to normal BG range, hopefully the bounciness will become less and less.
