Well no bounce yet today and a decent start to the day so I'm happy. :-D I have a feeling it's going to be a blue day and may even hit a green at +6.

I hope everyone's well and having a good day. I'm going to put some hanging baskets in my woods out back with some leaves, hair, fur, fabric scraps and stuff in them for the birds to use as nests. Pretty soon the visitors will be here for the summer to join my residents so I want them to be welcome.

I agree - yellow is a decent start to the day! What a great idea to leave bits of this and that for the birds' nest-making activities! I'm going to try it too. I put feeders because we get a lot of migratory action from birds going to and coming from Mexico.

Hi Randa,

I did it last year and it seemed to work. When I went out there in the winter, there was all this hay type stuff mixed in and I could see my scraps in there too. :lol: They must have liked it. I really have a lot of them here. I spend a fortune on food between the birds, squirrels and raccoons and of course Racci, the biggest expense of all. In the summer the population of birds doubles. The ones from last year all got knocked down from a wind storm this winter. Try it and see if it works for you too. :razz:

I just took a 2.5-258 and she's still rising which I figured with Racci. She usually doesn't show much until she zooms at 4,5,6,7 then the rest is gently moving up or down.

Thanks for visiting! I'm going to try doing some of that myself. :razz: I've been getting a lot of pm's or phone calls or Racci calls every time I try.

I don't understand what's going on with Racci today. Her nadir is super high! She also has no appetite. Could insulin be good one day and bad the next? even tho it looks fine? Maybe ketones? She's had no appetite either and eaten half her usual amount. It's as if I didn't give her a shot today! I'm going to try to convince her to pee.

I would think possible fur shot, but since she also has no appetite, I wonder if maybe she got into some contraband.

I think what you're seeing is a bounce. Some cats take a cycle for the bounce to start. I wouldn't worry. Just keep the dose the same. It's possible that there's a contraband issue or a fur shot but I think the more likely possibility is a bounce.

Do you think something is wrong just because of the number, or is she acting like something is wrong?

I agree with Sienne that it looks like a delayed bounce. Some cats wait a cycle or two before starting their bounces, for some reason. It looks like she has done that before. If other behaviors indicate a problem, though, then it could be something else.

Melanie, dont get upset-It's just one number one day...No cats has good numbers all the time, and things happen..If it is a bounce as Libby & Sienne have agreed, then it will pass--We have all felt like you do, and been where you are--and by tomorrow or even later, it could turn around__

Other than the appetite issue, nothing else seems wrong really . She's sleeping a lot but then again she's old and unused to higher numbers. What has me confused is that she's been going up all day instead of down at all. Would a bounce act like that? She's had bounces before and never did this. I know I gave the shot and I always check her fur afterwards because I rub her after shooting. I know I would have felt it or smelled a fur shot. She's such a big baby, she always says ouch so I rub it and she's happy. I also can't imagine any contraband being around. A bounce is really the only explanation or sickness.

I still haven't been able to get a ketone test. Since she started lower numbers she's like a camel instead of a cat or at least it seems that way. :lol: She looks very comfortable though. I'll test at +10 tonight and see what that looks like. Maybe I should give her shot at +11 instead of 12 if she's getting really high? What do you think? I hate to see her going really high.

I've just never seen her have a higher nadir than her other numbers before even in a bounce. She really took me by surprise. She's been doing that a lot lately tho. :roll:

My sister hung birdhouses all over the outside of her place...
It's horrendously messy during the season, and I thought I'd move them...
but it's like a "Sports Channel" for the Binkster!!! :lol: :lol:

So I just hose off the house in fall :-D

Hi Roni,
I seem to have lost those pants. Do you have another pair? I just never saw Racci go up instead of down on her nadir no matter how high she was, even in the beginning.

It's so weird. But really it's not just the one number, it's that all the numbers are going up that has me confused.

I tried to get her to pee so I could test her and carried her in the bathroom where the lb is & made this big show of putting a fresh layer on (it's always clean anyway), closed the door so she'd stay and put her down in front of her box. I was running the water and everything. She finally decided to make me happy by walking in it and then got out and laid on the rug to wait for me. All I succeeded in doing was making myself go. :lol:

I agree with Sienne and Libby. Racci got down to 40 yesterday and I've seen other cats take 24 hours to bounce (including Gracie). I don't think that you will necessarily see a nadir with a bounce. I've had Gracie go up in the
bounce, stay flat, come back down a little, and then go up again before she cleared. Because of the release of the counterregulatory hormones, there is no predicting what the BG will do before the bounce clears.

It's smart to be sure you check her ketones as soon as you can get a urine sample.

Here's the thing that concerns me about shooting early with her tonight. She has been clearing her bounces pretty quickly. So if you shoot her early and she clears this cycle, she could come down quickly on you. I like to shoot early as the bounce starts.

When would you have shot Marjie? At least I'll know for next time. I thought about shooting when I saw that +6. I thought it might not be a bad idea to wait for the +7, test and if still going up, shoot. Is that when you would have shot?

That's exactly what goes on but it's messier than that because the squirrels want to share the food too. :lol: The food is on the deck and the homes are in the woods. But the cats love it! they have squirrels and birds to watch! I use the leaf blower to clean the seed shells and the poop really isn't bad. Nothing a hose won't fix.

I'm going to be the technical nerd. The nadir is the lowest point of the cycle. It can be at any time. Some cats typically have early nadirs (e.g., Gabby will hit her low at around +3 or +4). Some cats have a late nadir.

When you're worrying about Racci having a high "nadir," I understand what you mean but what you are really saying is her +6 is higher than her pre-shot. If you look at Gabby's SS on 10/14/11, her PMPS is 246 vs. her +4 at 331. (I realize this isn't a huge difference but I'm trying to make a point.) It happens.

I also agree with Marje. I'd wait this out. Racci clears bounces pretty quickly. I also think it helps to remember that just as soon as you think you've figured out your cat's cycle, it changes. After all, they're cats!

Exactly, Sienne. Not only is the nadir higher, but every number has gotten progressively higher as if she never got a shot! At the time she should be going down, she's going up. Racci has had a +6 nadir since she went on Lantus, occasionally the +7 is the same or close. I guess you're right though, it just happens sometimes. I see what you're talking about on Gabby's chart but I don't think that's the same as every number rising throughout the day, all day. I've just never seen a bounce like that or a shot that did nothing. I'm wondering if somehow I shot the air before I shot her. It could be a weird bounce though. I'm just freaked out that somehow she either didn't get that shot or it's gone bad.

Racci just drank so I think I'm going to have to be able to test her urine soon. I'm going to try encouraging more water and see if I can get that test.

it totally looks like a bounce to me. Don't worry. :smile:

One thing that is hard to get used to when studying Lantus/Lev spreadsheets is that you have to learn to look at the action in "waves" that are usually 2-3 days. Each cycle by itself doesn't mean a lot. The patterns last a few days at a time. Somebody taught me to step back from the computer and squint at the SS so the numbers blur away and you just see "waves" of colors. That's when things can start to make sense.

Thanks all of you for taking so much time and patience with me. In all this time that Racci has been diabetic she's just never done this before. I guess she's just full of surprises for me and I have to start looking at her ss differently. If everyone thinks it's a bounce it must be. I'll try not to worry. nailbite_smile

I'm just so freaked out because I just lost her mom in september and she was only 1 year older and I just don't know what I'll do when I lose my little Racci baby. We have such a special bond. I will be so devastated. I want to make sure I'm doing all I can to protect her organs from the effects of the diabetes. I was able to get her asthma under control but this is proving a much greater challenge. She keeps throwing these curve balls at me. :shock:

Sorry, I had to run off in the middle of replying. I got the urine test- No ketones! Now I can be more at ease.

I got a BG test too @ 10.5-345 so she's not shooting up but definitely still on an upward trend. I just don't want her to go to far up. Do you still think I should'nt shoot early?

Well, I wound up shooting on time and strangely enough, her pmps was lower than her +6! I guess she's clearing her bounce. I hope this doesn't mean she'll go real low during the night now. She ate a real good dinner and had homemade beef from ribs that DH made (treats for testing) instead of her usual favorite, the DM and is stuffed and sleeping now so obviously she's feeling better from whatever was bothering her.

It's funny that the cat who will only eat fish in canned food will eat just about any meat that's freshly cooked but not too many times in the same week. She's quite the princess.
