It's been a few days. Ruby's doing her thing, going yellow occasionally, mostly blue with a sprinkling of green. She hasn't been pooping much. Small hard pellets are what I am finding in the box. Her conjunctivitis is gone and she's eating well and being snuggly.

I have a conundrum. Both of us humans are planning a three week trip in June. I plan to get Ruby an ultrasound in May. The oncologist talked about tapering Ruby's dose of pred if she continues to be as well as she was in November during her last US, and I want to have some time to monitor her and adjust her dose of insulin as necessary. I'm worried about what to do. Can she be on a vacation dose for three weeks without it causing DKA? Had anyone boarded their sugar kitty for a long period of time?

Any experiences or advice would alleviate my concern!:bighug:

I have seen people board kitties for that long. Including for a safari in Africa. And I've seen wildly different experiences with boarding. Any reason you couldn't hold off tapering the pred until you are back. Just knowing that it can also help the appetite. And also having recent experience with a pred taper failure that took a while to show itself. :blackeye:

You still spot checking ketones? I didn't see anything recent in the spreadsheet. Will petsitter test for them? You could also start a vacation dose quite a bit earlier and see how she's doing on it before you go.

Thanks, @Wendy&Neko! It's a combo work and vacation for us, the first time leaving the country in over two years. We need to do this trip.

Tapering when I get back is a good idea. I have not tested for ketones in a long while, as her numbers have been mostly good, but it does not hurt to do a spot check. The sitter could test for ketones, but I was thinking that I would board her at an actual cat clinic where people are trained to work with diabetic cats. I have to go and see the facilities first and understand what they can do for Ruby before I make plans, but having trained people around 24/7 might be a good thing.
