3/2 Kitty AMPS 93 - Syringe mistake, advice

I had trouble measuring the dose, but finally got it. I got all ready to shoot. Then the syringe brushed Kitty's back fur...and I shot it anyway. So it wasn't completely sterile.

I haven't ever done that before. I was so tired.

Should I call the vet and get him an antiobiotic?
 
I sure wouldnt want to give an a/b without knowing it was for sure needed.

Im not saying Im right here...but if Im envisioning what I am...I would not be too concerned. But thats just me, after doing similar things on occassion over the last few years. Of course, always keep an eye on the area you shot.
 
Thanks for the reply, Carolyn. I feel like such an idiot. He was there on the table, scruff was in my hand -- what was I thinking? I wasn't thinking, obviously. :oops:
 
Since we don't do a swab of the skin w/ alcohol, like our doctors do, the skin we go through and the fur right around it is pretty much the same as what happened w/ you. Tess has such thick under fur that there is always some around the injection point when I shoot. If you are really worried put some neosporin on the spot as a topical ab.
 
Ann, I wish I had thought of that, that would be a great idea. I just have no idea now where that spot is, and i don't think he will let me slather him up in Neosporin. :YMSIGH: But I'll go through the fur and look for anything too pink. Thank you, great suggestion - not least because it makes me feel like i can DO something.

Your needle touched another area of fur before you gave his shot? Is that what happened? Why would he need an antibiotic? :? I don't get it.

To 'fess up completely, I dropped the syringe on him, and the needle contact his fur. :oops: Thererofre, it wasn't perfectly sterile. :o I figured the outcome might be infection. nailbite_smile But preventive ABs aren't a great idea. :YMSIGH:

(I think I just wrote the comic book version! :lol: )

I talked to our vet to update her on Kitty's dental, though, and mentioned it. She agrees with everyone else here -- shouldn't be any problem.

nice +6, though! I was out and come home to find him eating, so the 90 may even be a bit high.
 
I am far from being an expert but I don't think you need to do that. In all the time you've been shooting you never weren't certain if the needle was in Kitty's skin or not and replaced the needle to a different spot ? I have. You are going to worry yourself to death sweetie. ♥

It will make you feel better if you call in the morning so to relieve yourself just do it to unburden yourself :razz:

Nice PMPS for a recent reduction! We broke open a new vial, just to give him a little oomph.

Nope. Never. Never dropped it, either. I may have majored in Worryology, but I have minors in Perfectionism and Compulsivity! :lol:

Ya' know, just tonight I was getting ready to fill the syringe and it touched a baggie so I disposed of it. but that's different. It's a baggie that I store the Lantus pen in and touch day after day. Like I said, if you're concerned(which i don't think you need to be)call the vet in the morning to put your mind to rest....whatever he/she says, I feel it in my bones that Kitty is AOK! :razz:

So I suppose you've never held the syringe in your mouth while you've crawled around under the bed trying to catch Kitty? Or is that just me?

(yes, Lucy is very good for her shots, but the last week or so she just plain didn't want them anymore).
 
Syringe in the mouth, trying to catch the cat, yes. I've done it a number of times.

I agree with everyone here, I think it will be ok. I bet Kitty's fur is cleaner than my mouth. :lol: Before I knew better, I reused syringes for 2 days (!!!) and LUCKILY never had any problems. A brush with his fur should be a-ok. There's nothing wrong with being safe though, it's always better to ask.

Well, not the syringe end! :lol: No, Kitty is too big to fit under the bed. :mrgreen:

Thanks for the reassurance, everyone. Caryl, I happened to talk with the vet late this afternoon (yes, it was a coincidence!), and she thought it would be fine.

Kitty IS very clean. :-D Sara, I hope Magnolia has recovered from her clean-up today too. Hope you both get a good night's sleep!

Caryl, I happened to talk with the vet late this afternoon (yes, it was a coincidence!), and she thought it would be fine.
