viewtopic.php?f=9&t=91257 - this is yesterdays post

As some of you may of read from yesterday - I was going to dentist today (1 hour 45 min drive there) and was getting some teeth pulled with anesthesia so my boyfriend Dane had to go with me. I was worried about Jupiter being here alone after insulin. (So worried I ended up not getting any sleep at all last night =(.. )

I ended up giving him a very small dose (about .2) this morning (around 7am) instead of his regular amount which is 1u

His numbers seem okay right now - I have updated the spreadsheet and my boyfriend just checked his BG when we got home around 2pm.

If this decrease in insulin this morning would cause his numbers to be high around when would the higher numbers start showing up?
If there is an increase in his BG numbers is there anything I should do (or anything I can do?)

I should give his next dose at 7pm still, correct?

Thanks

And to everyone that replied yesterday, Thanks for all the goodluck wishes -(I was very nervous about the anesthesia) but it all went well.
I also want to thank everyone for their advice with Jupiter - I really appreciate it so much!!

Re: 3/19 Newbie with question

just continue on with the 1u and testing tonight. let the shed build up. the lower dose is will allow his BG to remain higher. after going back to the 1u, it will take a few days to reach its potential.
gonna let the more experienced with how long answer

might even be in a sticky somewhere

Here's your post from your other thread (condo) today:

I am wondering how many times a day I should be testing Jupiter's Bg. I would really appreciate any advice or opinions. Thanks!!
We ask that you try to stay with one condo per day, so that questions and answers and stuff don't get all mixed up.
If no one has responded to you other post, you can delete it, before someone does..

I agree with Dian. I would stick with the one unit. Lantus works best with the same dose and consistancy.

I hope your dental turned out okay, today.

As far as testing. We would like to see at least a test before giving insulin, and whenever possible at least a test mid-cycle (around +6 or so) for every 12 hours, if you can.

I am also not sure if I did something wrong.. Jupiter never meows when I give him the insulin shot but today he meowed like I hurt him. Is it possible that I did something wrong and if so does anybody know what I couldve done wrong

I will always be able to test him before giving the shots. am i going overboard with testing him a few other times a day?

well drat... I had a nice reply all typed out and then it vanished.

Here I go again... :-D

There are many possibilities. You could have turned your hand a bit... you could have hit something or you could have a more sensitive cat like mine.
My cat always knew she was getting it.
The insulin stings a little and it's cold so that could have been why he meowed.
Some here say they are able to give a shot and their cat doesn't even flinch.... but I never had that experience.
I was always fussed at.

As for testing, tonite after you shoot. It's good to get a +2...
After your pmps number, if the +2 number drops a good amount, it can indicate an active cycle where you will want to test more often.
And you should post your numbers and someone should come tell you to when to get another test.

While the numbers are high, you can just get random tests thruout the cycle ...
you are collecting data that will help you make decisions in the future ...

Jupiter normally acts like he doesnt even notice me giving him the shot - main reason why I was worried when he gave me a painful sounding meow.

Dane (my boyfriend) will test Jupiter at +2 tonight then and I will add it to my spreadsheet. Thank you both for your replies.

Jamie --

How much you test really depends on you and on Jupiter. If you open other people's spreadsheets, you'll see a lot of variation in how much people test. Sometimes, if people work or are in school and have long commutes or challenging schedules, they can only get an AMPS and then get some additional tests at night. I have some flexibility with my work schedule and I have a cat that's prone to early, fast dives. As a result, I test more during the early part of the cycle. At the minimum, you want to get your pre-shot tests and one test during each cycle. I tend to like to suggest that people get a +2 or a +3 test as a place to start. If either of those numbers are substantially lower than your pre-shot number, there's a good chance you'll see an active cycle and may need to test more.

As for today, it's good you got some insulin into Jupiter. There's no way to guess how he's going to respond to the reduced dose. Currently, he hasn't been on insulin long enough to have a filled depot. With reducing the dose, it will take a little longer for the depot to fill.

We call those shots "ouchies". Occasionally you might hit a sensitive spot; we all do that from time to time. Don't worry. Jupiter will be fine.

Have a good evening. I hope that your dental went well.

maybe this will help...
If you had the bevel upside down , that can drag/pull the skin and they feel that....

Use correct Position: Hold the syringe almost parallel to the cat's spine. You want the insulin to be injected just under the skin (subcutaneous) NOT into the muscle, which hurts! Make sure the bevel of the needle is UP. This ensures a clean, quick puncture instead of a drag through the skin.

bevel.gif

Be Quick, Confident: Do the puncture quickly. Most of the pain nerves are at the very surface of the skin and once you get past them things improve. Remember that a relatively firm pinch works to help numb the area. The very small size (gauge) needles available now hardly are felt at all by the cat, even without pinching the area. Once the needle is through the skin you can slow down a bit.

Follow Up: Once you are through, give the cats lots of hugs, kisses, praise, and maybe another tiny treat.

His depot has to fill and that takes several cycles.
often you might get a food spike after shot... ( assuming you fed and shot at the same time)

I like that he didn't go up.

Did you see the picture of the bevel for your needle? that would have made Jupiter meow if you had it facing the wrong way.

Sometimes newbies don't notice extra posts in the middle.
