Ham is doing very good after his dental. I have put off upping his dose due to the many other medications he was put on. We still have about a week left on the antibiotic and anti-inflammatory.

Good to hear Ham is recovering from his dental. What medications was he put on? Adding the names of meds to the remarks can also help us help you. Some meds increase the blood sugar.

His numbers are still rather high and I don't think you need to wait until the medications are finished. I would increase to 5.0 units at the next cycle. I wouldn't want a kitty with a recent DKA to stay in high numbers. I would keep up testing for ketones daily while he's still in these high numbers.

One other thing, you might want to put a note in the remarks for the day that he had a dental.

Meloxicam or Metacam, has a black box warning on it from the FDA against use on cats. It's very hard on kitties kidneys because it is a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) which are known to contribute to renal failure in cats. He's still got the tramadol for pain relief , though buprenorphine is a better choice. But since he didn't have any teeth pulled, I don't know why he would be put on either an Metacam or Tramadol in the first place.

When I looked up Biomox on drugs.com, I saw the warning "For use in dogs only". It contains cherry flavour and sucruse (sugar). No wonder his numbers are higher. Without extractions, again there are no need for antibiotics, especially ones for dogs only! The Pro-Pectalin is probably to counter the effects of the other meds.

If you haven't guessed, I'm a fan of no unnecessary meds.

I had asked for the Pro-Pectalin cuz Ham was having diarrhea again. I am not a fan of unneeded meds either, but I'm not a vet either. Ham was expected to get a tooth pulled but the vet said when he got in there his tooth was healthy it was just his gums that were in bad shape.

So do you think I should stop giving Ham all of these since he never actually got teeth pulled??

There are cat appropriate antibiotics. Along the same line, I think Clavamox is commonly prescribed, though clindamycin is also prescribed for mouth issues. Whether or not to continue meds is worth a discussion with the vet. I have a "no metacam" written on my cats files so I would definitely stop it.

ETA: Or at least get something that doesn't have sugar added.

I spoke to the fill in vet. It was not the same one I spoke to on Friday. He said none on the medication would raise Ham bg levels and to keep him on it. The vet said if Ham had an infection before the cleaning that would raise his sugar... so I went ahead an bumped Ham's dose to 5 units.

Just keep the BD in mind when you stop the meds officially -- not that you wouldn't, just a reminder ;) Especially if that one really does have sucralose in it like Wendy said, its worth a little extra monitoring.
